Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There is a classic series of games that has players fighting the evil Dracula through the centuries. Dracula's second-in-command is Death himself, an evil skeletal Grim Reaper. What is this iconic game series, first released in 1986?

Answer: Castlevania

"Castlevania" was first released in 1986 in Japan, and ported to the NES cartridge for the 1987 US release. The game follows Simon Belmont, a descendant of a vampire hunter, as he traverses Dracula's castle to ultimately vanquish Dracula himself. Throughout the six blocks and eighteen stages, Simon is met with various monsters such as Frankenstein and, ultimately, the Grim Reaper, before he gets the chance to defeat Dracula himself. "Castlevania" was the first of this iconic series which spans decades, with dozens of games.
2. After years and years of fighting, surely Mario was ready to defeat his foe for good when he fell in lava in "New Super Mario Bros" in 2006. Unfortunately, this villain emerged as a newly skeletal version of himself, king of all the undead. Who is this bony foe?

Answer: Dry Bowser

Bowser, King Koopa himself, first appeared in 1985 as Mario's antagonist in "Super Mario Bros." We would not see Dry Bowser for over twenty years, however. In 2006, "New Super Mario Bros." was released for the Nintendo DS. In this game, both Bowser and Bowser Jr. are Mario's foes. Upon the initial defeat of Bowser, the lava melts his skin off and he re-emerges as an undead skeleton.

This now made him the King of the Dry Bones. The popularity of the skeletal Bowser led him to appear in quite a number of games since his initial introduction in 2006.
3. In this game, based on Greek mythology, you play as Zagreus, who is trying to escape the Underworld. You fight many famed beasts of myth, including the remains of one of Hercules' Labors. The Lernaean beast, now stripped of flesh, becomes the Bone Hydra. In which game would you find this boss?

Answer: Hades

"Hades" was released in 2020, and was met with high reviews; it is now often considered one of the greatest games of all time. In it, you play as Zagreus, the son of Hades, as you try and escape the Underworld to find his biological mother Persephone. You come across several creatures familiar in Greek myth, including the legendary guardian Cerberus. Hydra, in this game, has had their flesh cauterized off from their prior encounter with Hercules. Now Hydra resides in the Underworld as the undead guardian of Asphodel, known now as Bone Hydra.
4. Gravelord Nito, the First of the Dead, is one of the original Lords that started a war with dragons. He is one of the great ones who founded the Souls of Lords. His daunting skeletal figure looms, and he is a pretty powerful foe. In which of these games is he found?

Answer: Dark Souls

"Dark Souls", released in 2011, is a critically acclaimed role-playing game notorious for having extremely difficult boss battles. Gravelord Nito, a skeletal Lord, is no different. As one of the four who found the Lord Souls, he is immensely powerful.

He gained the title "First of the Dead" because, through necromancy, he was able to return to life, the first of a new species of undead skeletons. "Dark Souls" was so immensely popular upon its release, an entire subgenre is dedicated to it. Games that are insanely difficult with tons of bosses like "Dark Souls" are known as "Soulslike".
5. A skeleton is one of the mini bosses you encounter during the boss fight of King Dice in "Cuphead". As a Skeletal Spectral Horse, it makes sense that his name is a pun mixing "fear" with a famed racehorse. What is this skeleton horse's name?

Answer: Phear Lap

"Cuphead" was released in 2017 and was given rave reviews; the game became iconic, known as one of the greatest video games of all time, one of the most difficult games of all time, and one of the best video game soundtracks of all time. Many of the bosses, given their outlandish difficulty, have become iconic in the gaming community. One such boss is King Dice, where you fight a bunch of mini bosses based on a randomized gambling system before fighting King Dice himself. On space 6, you fight Phear Lap.

The fight is one of the difficult plane boss fights, and takes place above a horse racing track. Being a ghostly skeleton horse, the parried items are horseshoes, and he even sports himself a green visor to wear.
6. "Kingdom Hearts II" is full of all sorts of wonderful villains from Disney films, from the more popular to even some slightly more obscure characters. One of the villains, the main one in Port Royal, is a ghostly pirate who turns into a skeleton in the moonlight, causing him to become invincible. Which villain must you fight in the shadows to defeat at Port Royal?

Answer: Barbossa

"Kingdom Hearts II" was released in 2005, the third in the "Kingdom Hearts" series, taking place just after "Chain of Memories". The level of Port Royal is based on the film "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl". Both in the film and the level based on it, Barbossa is the pirate villain encountered.

He is cursed, just as in the movie, and becomes an invincible skeleton in the moonlight. Fortunately, there are shadows throughout that can return him to his human form, who just so happens to be vulnerable to attacks.
7. In this fighting game series, it seems as though Nightmare is the main villain, but he's really just the host for an even more threatening villain; Inferno. Inferno is a fiery skeleton creature, given power through the sword he wields - a sword that is also Inferno himself. In which series do you encounter the flaming skull menace of Inferno?

Answer: Soulcalibur

The "Soulcalibur" series began with an arcade game in 1996 known as "Soul Edge" ("Soul Blade" in international markets). This is where we first met Inferno, though under the name "SoulEdge". Soul Edge is the name of the powerful evil sword that contains the essence of the villain now known as Inferno.

Many characters in the series, such as Sigfriend and Cervantes, have been possessed by Soul Edge; and he becomes the second stage of Nightmare once he is given the ability to have his own body as Inferno. Soulcalibur is also the name of the sword to counter Soul Edge, as a combination of Soul paired with the Arthurian Excalibur.
8. The High Priest of the DomZ is the main villain in this game; he's a skeletal alien being fed the citizens of Hillys to sustain his life power. Jade has a connection to the creature, though this is not known until the climax near the end of the game. Which of these critically acclaimed games, which has garnered a cult following, is this?

Answer: Beyond Good and Evil

"Beyond Good and Evil" was released in 2003 and, though it was not commercially successful, gained a cult following and was praised greatly. The game follows Jade, a resident of Hillys, who mut save the citizens from the invasion of the DomZ aliens. A group of humans known as the Alpha Sections is dedicated to stopping the invasion, though we learn later this may not be entirely true. When Jade leaves to the moon on the IRIS Network's ship, Beluga, she encounters the leader of the DomZ invasion; the skeletal High Priest of the DomZ. We learn she had been connected to the DomZ from the beginning, and their meeting was inevitable.

"Beyond Good and Evil" had a sequel announced in 2008, though it has undergone a number of setbacks. The game became notorious for being in development hell, and in fact broke the record held by "Duke Nukem Forever" in 2022 for the longest development of a video game. As a huge fan of the game myself, a 15 year wait for a video game has been difficult.
9. In the "Monkey Island" series of games, the main villain is an undead pirate. Since his first appearance in 1990, his face has appeared from a ghostly zombie look to a spectral skull. What is the name of this villainous pirate?

Answer: Captain LeChuck

The first game in the series is called "The Secret of Monkey Island", a point and click adventure game released in 1990. It is in this game that we first meet the protagonist, Guybrush Threepwood, and the antagonist Captain LeChuck. This ghostly pirate is a master swordsman and obsessed with voodoo.

Interestingly, we do not discover the "secret" of Monkey Island during this game; nor the next four games. It wasn't until 2022 upon the release of "Return to Monkey Island" that the creator said the real "secret" is that Guybrush was only at a pirate-themed amusement part the entire time.
10. What skeleton character quiz would be complete without reviewing "Undertale"? "Undertale" is a very popular turn-based bullet hell adventure game, and has several different endings based on how you play. The game features two brothers, both skeletal; their names are based on fonts, and each of them have their speech on the screen written in those fonts. What are their names?

Answer: Sans and Papyrus

Sans and Papyrus are two skeleton brothers that are featured in "Undertale" (2015). They are villains in the series, but the way you interact with them in combat determines how the rest of the game plays out, as there are multiple endings possible to achieve. Papyrus is the second boss you encounter, but, in the end, if he is spared, he befriends you and aids you along the way. Sans is not as friendly, however.

In the pacifist story line, he monitors the player throughout the journey. If the genocide path is chosen, however, Sans is one of the most frustrating final bosses in gaming. Given that the more you fight the harder the battles become, Sans being last means the fight is going to test you. Being that the combat mechanics are a bullet hell turn-based system, you'll fight him dozens of times before you finally complete the game on the genocide path!
