Mario first started out in the arcade in "Donkey Kong", which was released in 1981. In "Donkey Kong" you had to run and climb ladders to save Pauline, who is now known as Princess Peach. This is one of Nintendo's most famous mascots.

Sonic first started out in the video game with the same name as the character for Sega's 16-bit home console called the Sega Genesis in 1989. This character is one of Sega's most famous mascots.

Pac-Man first started out at the arcade in 1980. You probably remembered playing this game on the Atari 2600 (the first Atari). This may be shocking but it was received that way because the people that played it at the arcade said that the one for the Atari did not look like the arcade version at all.

Link first started out in the NES game, "The Legend of Zelda" which was released in 1986. If you chose Zelda as your answer, don't feel bad, many people get this mixed up. Zelda was the princess in the game you had to rescue and Link was the one who did all the fighting.
