Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The "Pac-man" character is likely one of the most recognizable of all video game characters. From what source did the game's primary designer, Toru Iwatani, derive his inspiration to create "Pac-man"?

Answer: A pizza with one slice missing

Iwatani designed "Pac-man" to look similar to a pizza with a slice missing and he kept the gameplay simple to appeal to a wide audience. Interestingly, Pac-man's mouth opens to approximately 30 degrees which is equal to 1/12 of a circle (30/360).
2. As most of us probably know, the game of "Pac-man" is a points-based game. After "eating" a certain number of dots on the screen, a piece of fruit or other item appears for bonus points. How many dots must a player eat to have these bonuses appear on screen?

Answer: 70 & 170

There are 240 dots on the screen for Pac-man to eat. The bonus items, appearing twice each stage, will appear just under the ghost box after 70 and 170 dots have been eaten. The first bonus item, on stage one, is a cherry worth 100 points.
3. The game of "Pac-man" is made challenging by the presence of ghosts that attempt to capture Pac-man. How many ghosts are there that chase Pac-man?

Answer: Four

The four ghosts are Blinky (red), Pinky (pink), Inky (light blue), and Clyde (orange). Each ghost has different characteristics that become apparent after several sessions of play. For example, the red ghost almost always directly pursues Pac-man while the orange ghost seems to move randomly around the board.
4. Other than eating dots and collecting bonus items, power pills are also a great source for points. When Pac-man eats a power pill, the ghosts turn blue, they slow down, and they can be eaten for points. How many points will a player receive if he/she eats all of the ghosts on one power pill?

Answer: 3,000

The first ghost that is eaten is worth 200 points, the second 400, the third 800, and the fourth 1,600. Since the power pill runs out rather quickly, it is advantageous to wait for all the ghosts to congregate near a power pill before eating it.
5. The game of "Pac-man" takes a high level of skill because Pac-man's only real weapons are the power pills and the skill of the player. Of the following, which is NOT a disadvantage experienced by the "Pac-man" player?

Answer: Pac-man travels slower than the ghosts through the escape tunnels on the side of the board.

Pac-man travels much faster than the ghosts through the escape tunnels that take the player to the other side of the screen. Since Pac-man also turns faster than the ghosts do, you can separate yourself from a ghost by making as many turns as possible rather than traveling along a straight path.
6. When a player eats a power pill and then eats a ghost while it is blue from the power pill, what happens to that ghost?

Answer: The ghost's eyes travel back to the ghost box in the center of the board and then the ghost returns as normal.

Unfortunately for the "Pac-man" player, eating a ghost by way of a power pill provides only a brief respite from the attack. At times, the ghosts that have returned after you have eaten them block your attempt to eat other ghosts that are still blue and vulnerable from the power pill.
7. The game of "Pac-man" is one of the first arcade games to feature intermissions. Of the following, after which stage is there NOT an intermission in the game of "Pac-man"?

Answer: Three

The first intermission is after the second stage in the game. The intermission shows Pac-man being chased in one direction by the red ghost and then shortly after it shows an enormous Pac-man chasing the red ghost in the opposite direction.
8. Although "Pac-man" is one of the most successful arcade games ever, there is a serious glitch when a player reaches a certain level. Since the game produces a split-screen (one side normal and one filled with text), the stage becomes nearly impossible to beat. At what level will this glitch occur?

Answer: 256

Since the 256th level is unbeatable, it is usually considered to be the end of the game. The glitch occurs at the 256th level because the game's level number is kept in a hexadecimal byte that (for some reason) resets at stage 256. This glitch causes there to be text and 256 pieces of fruit on the screen.
9. In 1999 an individual completed the first ever perfect game of "Pac-man". He was able to beat all of the levels in the game while getting every bonus item, eating every ghost off of a power pill, and he never got caught by the ghosts. Who is this "Pac-man" legend?

Answer: Billy Mitchell

Billy Mitchell's score after the 255 playable levels (and six hours of gaming) was an amazing 3,333,360 points. Although he is most known for this feat, Billy is also one of the highest all-time scorers in the games "Burgertime", "Centipede", "Donkey Kong", and "Donkey Kong Jr.".
10. Under the default settings, the player is awarded a bonus life after accumulating how many points?

Answer: 10,000

The bonus life can be obtained on the first stage as there are a possible 14,600 points on that stage. Unfortunately, the bonus life is not awarded at every 10,000 points, only the first 10,000.
