Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What Namco Bandai franchise helped launch the PlayStation 3 with "Crossfire"?

Answer: Mobile Suit Gundam

Although all of these inevitably appeared on the PlayStation 3 roster in later years, Namco Bandai's early collection on the PS3 consisted of two games, the first being "Mobile Suit Gundam: Crossfire", a game devoted to battling popular Gundams in war-like scenarios.

Although some critics took mercy on the game, it being a launch title, it was a relatively unfavourable entry into the series and collection as a whole, mainly because it did not take advantage of the higher graphics processing and capabilities of the powerhouse system in its early days. Namco Bandai followed it up with "Dynasty Warriors: Gundam" in 2007, "Dynasty Warriors: Gundam 2" in 2008 and "Dynasty Warriors: Gundam 3", in 2010 (and others in Japan, where they were more popular and better-received).

They got a bit better as time went on.
2. The seventh iteration in Namco Bandai racing series appeared on day 1 of the PS3's run. What game series, originally appearing on the PlayStation 1, was it from?

Answer: Ridge Racer

The only other Namco Bandai game for the PS3 (at least until 2009) was "Ridge Racer 7", a by-the-books, realistic racing game previously visited in six other installments seen on the PlayStation 1 and PlayStation 2 (and, for a time, Nintendo consoles and handhelds).

The game was actually modestly-received despite being a launch title-- with plenty of game options for players and many cars and tracks, it ran like an ideal seventh-generation lead-off, acting as a precursor to the long-deferred "Gran Turismo 5", "Burnout: Paradise", "GRiD", and "Blur".

It went Platinum shortly after.
3. What would a seventh-generation console be without one of several (dozen) "Call of Duty" games? Which of the following was a PS3 launch title?

Answer: Call of Duty 3

Surprisingly, although Activision's "Call of Duty" gained a great deal of steam in gaming's seventh generation with a multitude of titles (annually, seriously) praised for online play and realistic war action, it got its start on the PS3 with "Call of Duty 3", a full year before advancing into the modern era.

This game set itself during the Normandy invasion of World War II. The developers at Treyarch had a long, healthy career making sequel after sequel of "Call of Duty" well into the eighth generation of gaming.

The game very quickly became a Platinum title; it was also a launch title for the Wii, released on the same weekend.
4. This game featuring Wolverine, Spider-Man, Captain America, and Thor (amongst others) was one of the more popular early action games for the console. Which of these was it?

Answer: Marvel: Ultimate Alliance

"Marvel: Ultimate Alliance" was released on all then-current home consoles at the time of the PS3 launch and, like "X-Men Legends" before it, it featured many characters in the roster (not just X-Men, but all Marvel franchises) as they set out to stop the evil-doers. With four-player local co-op, you could hone in on one character or build several to construct cohesive parties in an action-adventure journey. Created by Raven Software (who later started making DLC for Activision's "Call of Duty" series), the game was popular enough to warrant a sequel in 2009. Both were critically well-received.
5. Created by Insomniac Games, what launch title, a PlayStation exclusive, was considered one of the top-sellers for the console?

Answer: Resistance: Fall of Man

"Resistance: Fall of Man" was a highly-anticipated launch title for many, especially considering an early lack of first-person shooters and the high amount of them on the Xbox 360. The game followed soldiers in Britain during a parallel 1951 as they sought to rid the land of alien forces.

The game was critically praised and resulted in two sequels on the PlayStation 3 as time went on. The creators at Insomniac Games also made several games in the "Spyro the Dragon" and "Ratchet and Clank" series before moving elsewhere into new ventures late in the Xbox 360's life.
6. What "Need For Speed" series game was the first to appear on the PS3, releasing as a launch title?

Answer: Carbon

After "Underground", "Underground 2", and "Most Wanted", "Carbon" continued an era of EA's "Need For Speed" which continued its tenure of interesting tracks and fast cars. In subsequent years, the popularity of the series continued to grow with "ProStreet" and "Undercover" before it moved into a new era of style and capabilities. "Need for Speed: Carbon" also launched on the Wii and, with both consoles combined, met with stellar sales.

It also received good reviews. It was one of only two EA launch titles for this console.
7. What launch title created by Sony's in-house developers was a hack-and-slash game involving a warrior, mage, and scout as playable characters?

Answer: Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom

"Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom" was one of the few fantasy-based games to launch with the console and while it did not receive rave reviews it did sate genre players long enough-- at least until the release of "Oblivion" five months later. The game allowed you to choose between heavy-hitting melee, stealthier attacks, or magic in an attempt to fight through the dark kingdom.

The game falls into the "Untold Legends" series which, until this game, was exclusively played on the PSP.
8. What PS3 launch game set in Japan featured the famous 'giant mutant crab' gaffe?

Answer: Genji: Days of the Blade

The sequel to the PlayStation 2 title "Genji: Dawn of the Samurai", "Days of the Blade" was a hack-and-slash title released on launch day, of course, and it ended up being one of the lesser-renowned games from the time. In fact, the developers at Game Republic didn't make another "Genji" game for the PlayStation 3 during its run (their next game was "Folklore"). Praised for better graphics, showcasing the console's improved processor and capabilities, "Genji" lost points in its handling.

The story was based around feudal Japan and featured many fantasy elements including, most infamously, a 'giant mutant crab'.
9. What skateboard-themed game released as a launch title on the PS3 combined skate locales from previous games in its series?

Answer: Tony Hawk's Project 8

The eighth "Tony Hawk" video game and the first on seventh-generation consoles, "Project 8" was an amalgamation of tracks from the series' other games combined on a single map and enhanced by the better graphics of Sony's new console. Oddly, while the game was available for online play on the PlayStation 2, such feature was not included for the PlayStation 3, possibly because of issues with the software.

The game was created by Neversoft, later known for taking on "Guitar Hero" after the departure of Harmonix.

They also made the next sequel, "Proving Ground".
10. Upon the PlayStation 3's launch in 2006, sports games were released by both EA Sports and 2K Sports.

Answer: True

With the advent of the seventh generation, the sports game industry had an apparent rivalry between EA Sports and 2K Sports with both releasing a series of annual titles involving then-current rosters to appeal to sports fans of all types. When the PS3 first launched, EA Sports sent out "Madden NFL 07", "NBA 07", "Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07", and "Fight Night Round 3". 2K games released "NBA 2K7" and "NHL 2K7"; as the year progressed they also released "Major League Baseball 2K7", "College Hoops 2K7", and "All-Pro Football 2K8". EA added even more to their lineup in July with "NCAA Football 08", "NASCAR 08", and "Madden NFL 08".

The cycle would continue on.
