Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which studio is behind the development of 2015's "The Order: 1886"?

Answer: Ready at Dawn

"The Order: 1886" is one of those games that's so cinematic in its style that you don't know when a cutscene has finished and you're able to play again. The way this was pulled off, though, has divided opinion. For starters, a fixed framerate certainly gives it a feel more akin to watching a film, but the letterboxing of the screen does somewhat detract from the gameplay, particularly when some encounters require quick reflexes and not all of the screen is being used to its fullest. Concern was also raised about the amount of actual gameplay in between cutscenes and quick-time events. Regardless, this quasi-Victorian, werewolf-overrun, alternate version of the titular year of 1886 is one which again emphasises the uniqueness of some of the PlayStation 4's exclusives.
2. "LittleBigPlanet 3", 2014's entry in the creative platforming series, features the voice of which British actor as the game's bad guy Newton, known for his comedic partnership with the game's narrator as well as for playing a grumpy doctor in a highly-popular US television series?

Answer: Hugh Laurie

With the series' original creators, Media Molecule, passing the reins on, fellow British studio Sumo Digital scooped them up for the PlayStation 4's first entry in the series, "LittleBigPlanet 3". One of the most immediately noticeable changes to this game is the increased depth in each level.

While previous games had only three levels of depth to the play area, this one upped it to an incredible sixteen, adding oceans of creative possibility to those wanting to continue with the series' traditional emphasis on user-generated levels. Also, Sackboy can now be joined by an ensemble cast of three other playable characters (Toggle, OddSock and Swoop), each with their own unique abilities.

The perennial narrator Stephen Fry returns and is accompanied by his old comedy partner Hugh Laurie, who voices the game's antagonist, Newton, who unwittingly releases the Titans and becomes possessed with the idea of removing all the creativity from the world.
3. Which Insomniac Games-developed 2016 game is a re-imagining of a 2002 PlayStation 2 game and was marketed as being "the game based on the movie based on the game"?

Answer: Ratchet & Clank

"Ratchet & Clank" takes a bit of artistic license with the series' history and creates a new origin story for two of Sony's best-loved video game characters, though by no means constitutes a reboot of the series (Insomniac Games has stated this is not a reboot but a tie-in to the animated film of the story, hence "the game based on the movie based on the game"). Nonetheless, many elements of the original PlayStation 2 game are there (almost all planets and locations, a few classic weapons, more or less the same cast of characters) as well as bits and pieces from the games that came after it (such as the antagonist Dr Nefarious, whose first appearance in the series wasn't until two games after the original).

The games have never disappointed on a visual level, and it's clear that "Ratchet & Clank" uses every bit of the PlayStation 4's power available to create one of the most visually-stunning games to ever grace a home console.
4. Although it was hit with delays and some significant setbacks during development (and after release too), which PlayStation 4-exclusive was a 2014 release by Evolution Studios?

Answer: Driveclub

The marketing campaign behind "Driveclub" garnered some significant interest in the months leading up to its release. In the absence of a "Gran Turismo" game (a series considered to be the benchmark for racing games), "Driveclub" was shaping up to be a solid competitor (which was even more significant as both it and the "Gran Turismo" series are PlayStation-exclusive).

The game's premise is one which blurs the line between racing realism and social connectivity. Its scope was such that it was inevitable that there would be a delay from the original projected release in late 2013, after the PlayStation 4 had hit the market. Around a year and a half after announcement, "Driveclub" finally got past its issues in development and released in October 2014, only to be hit with some new ones once players were in and racing (the primary reason being unreliable online play).

A free, bite-sized version of the game for PlayStation Plus subscribers, originally planned for release alongside the main game but was delayed until June 2015, only to be removed from the PlayStation Store mere months later.
5. Riding high on the success of the "Dark Souls" games, FromSoftware brought which game exclusively to the PlayStation 4 in 2015?

Answer: Bloodborne

The unexpected popularity of FromSoftware's "Demon's Souls" (2009) led to the "Dark Souls" games, that were received with equally open arms and praise, injecting some actual difficulty into a generation of games that some argued were becoming easier and pandering more to the casual player.

After the first two "Dark Souls" games in 2011 and 2014, both of which were multi-platform releases, "Bloodborne", again in a similar vein to its forebears, caused a bit of stir when it was announced as a PlayStation 4 exclusive. "Bloodborne" was intended to be incredibly detailed, more than was capable of the seventh generation consoles, so it was always destined for their successors.

It was Sony's promptness in providing FromSoftware with development kits and the PlayStation 4's power to fully realise the Gothic setting that befitted the game that led to its exclusivity.
6. "A Thief's End" was released in 2016 as the final entry in which acclaimed series that began life in the early days of the PlayStation 3?

Answer: Uncharted

Despite being one of the PlayStation 4's most anticipated games, the early stages of development of "Uncharted 4: A Thief's End" were a little bit rocky for developer Naughty Dog. The series' long-running creative designer Amy Hennig and director of the previous two games Justin Richmond left the studio several months into development. Bruce Straley and Neil Druckmann, the driving forces behind Naughty Dog's terrific "The Last of Us" (2013), were brought on board and almost completely overhauled all existing development work on the game as they steered it in a new direction. From there, it was relatively smooth sailing (bar a few delays) until the worldwide release in May 2016. And that was it.

The end of an era had arrived. "A Thief's End" release to rave reviews and well-deserved critical acclaim, sending the series out on a high.
7. 2015's "Tearaway Unfolded" was a re-release of the game "Tearaway", which initially appeared on which platform?

Answer: PlayStation Vita

Given the creativity of their "LittleBigPlanet" games, it was no surprise that Media Molecule's "Tearaway" (2013) was similar in style. Initially released on the PS Vita, the game was later reworked and enhanced for the PlayStation 4. "Tearaway Unfolded", like its forebear, takes place in an adorable world made entirely of paper, with the player taking control of a messenger with an important message to deliver. Elements of the environment can be manipulated by use of the controller's touch pad and motion sensors.

Some tasks require creating paper designs for decoration or for opening new areas, a feat which is again accomplished by drawing with a finger on the touch pad. Though it was warmly received, some felt it was unnecessary to remake one of the Vita's saving graces and that it removed some of the personality that the former had (like using the Vita's camera to take pictures for use in the game).
8. What subtitle was attached to the 2013 "Killzone" game, which launched alongside the PlayStation 4?

Answer: Shadow Fall

Continuing the "Killzone" series' futuristic shooter theme but departing slightly from the more linear level design seen previously, "Killzone Shadow Fall" takes place some thirty years after the last game, with the Helghast and Vekta still at each other's throats, particularly after the destruction of the Helghast's home planet by the Vekta and the subsequent colonisation of its survivors on the Vekta's planet.

As tensions between the two races grow ever more bitter and bloody and the threat of biological warfare looms, players are thrust right into the action and have to find a way to stop all hell from breaking loose.

As impressive to look at as it is to play, "Killzone Shadow Fall" set a decent bar for further PlayStation 4 FPSs to reach, particularly for a launch title.
9. With a new protagonist at the fore and a chaotic range of new powers to control, of which series was 2014's "Second Son" a part?

Answer: InFamous

With Cole McGrath's story more or less wrapped up in the PlayStation 3 games "InFamous" (2009) and "InFamous 2" (2011), "Infamous: Second Son" shifts to a new protagonist and a new location, making dazzling use of the PlayStation 4's increased specs over its predecessor.

The result is a remarkably pretty recreation of Seattle, in which our hero (or villain, if you prefer) Delsin Rowe can run around in and use multiple types of powers (in contrast to Cole McGrath's ability to control only electricity). Across the game, Delsin is able to use smoke, neon, video and concrete powers against the malevolent Brooke Augustine and the Department of Unified Protection, who want to capture all those who are "conduits" that can wield and manipulate these powers.
10. Which influential figure at Sony and chief architect of the PlayStation 4 itself was responsible for writing and directing "Knack", a launch title?

Answer: Mark Cerny

Japan Studio, one of Sony's first party developers with games like "Legend of Dragoon" (2000), "LocoRoco" (2006) and "Puppeteer" (2013) to their name, joined forces with Mark Cerny, one of the industry's leading figures and the man Sony got in to lead the development of the PlayStation 4, to create the Pixar-like beat-em-up "Knack". Knack is the central character made of block-like objects called relics, and can absorb or shed them as a means of becoming bigger or smaller. Obviously, the more relics that Knack is able to soak up from breaking open crates or siphoning them from the environment, the bigger he'll be and the harder he'll hit. Surprisingly, given how it looks and its kid-friendly appeal, "Knack" can be quite punishing at times, particularly when replayed on higher difficulties for those precious trophies. Nonetheless, it is a fun and great-looking platformer and one which hopefully served to whet the appetite of gamers and give them an early taste of what the PlayStation 4 is capable of.
