Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What promotion has Sonny received prior to the start of the game?

Answer: Sergeant

After his heroics in the first two games, Sonny has earned the title of "Sergeant" for this one. Unlike previous games, Sonny is actually a boss in this one.
2. At the beginning of the game Sonny is working for what unit that he hadn't worked for since the first game?

Answer: Traffic

Sonny is once again working for the traffic unit, which is always understaffed. This time, however, he is the head of the unit. He is the one who gives the briefings to the other officers.
3. What other element of "Police Quest 1" has been brought back in "Police Quest 3?"

Answer: Manual driving

In "Police Quest 1," you have to make the character drive wherever you want to go. You control the vehicle using the arrow keys and look at the map and make the character drive where you want to go. This element of the game is not in "Police Quest 2." In that game, when you want to go somewhere, just type "drive to ..." and he will drive there.

However, "Police Quest 3" is the first game in the series to use the VGA point-and-click graphics rather than the EGA parser graphics where you type everything. With improved controls, they improved the driving system and brought it back for "Police Quest 3." However, although the vehicle is easier to control in "Police Quest 3" than in the EGA "Police Quest 1," and "Police Quest 3" gives you music while you are driving, you cannot look at a map of Lytton while you are driving like you could in "Police Quest 1." So some people actually believe the EGA "Police Quest 1" had a better driving system.

The VGA "Police Quest 1" came out after "Police Quest 3," and had an even easier driving system and you can look at the map while driving in that game.
4. At the beginning of the game, Sonny is notified of a complaint regarding what officer?

Answer: Pat Morales

Sonny receives a complaint that Pat Morales had been using profanity when dealing with a speeder. Sonny should talk to her in his office and learn more about this.
5. What should Sonny to with the complaint?

Answer: Sustained

It becomes clear from early on in the game that Pat Morales is a very bad cop. You better realize that now because your opinion of Pat Morales will be very VERY important later in the game. Pat will try and justify her behavior by saying the speeder was being rude to her and ogling her like a sex object. That part could be true. But Sonny has had equally bad things happen to him, and also some even worse things happen. In previous games Sonny's been yelled at, cursed at, degraded, called names, and he's even had his now-wife kidnapped and he's been shot at and he's seen relatively innocent people killed, and through it all he has always remained civil, respectful, and nice. Why in the world would he sympathize with Pat Morales?

If you make the wrong decision with this complaint it's not a big deal. You'll just be forfeiting points this time. You'll have plenty of other chances to see what Pat Morales is like. But it should be clear that the complaint should be sustained.
6. Which of the following items is not in Sonny's locker?

Answer: Gun

The gun is in Sonny's inventory right at the start of the game. This is another throwback to the first game, as the locker combination is in the manual. The locker combination could be found in-game in "Police Quest 2," but in "Police Quest 1" and "Police Quest 3" it's in the documentation that comes with the game.

It's not the only level of copy protection either. Locker Combinations, police codes, and police procedures are all in the manual. "Police Quest" games rely on the manual more than most other games; I never understood why Jim Walls felt these games needed additional levels of copy protection with the locker combos in games 1 and 3 and the mug shots in game 2.
7. Where is the first place Sonny needs to go?

Answer: Aspen Falls

Dispatch tells Sonny to respond to a situation at Aspen Falls, which is in the southeast corner of the game. It's at about the same spot where Cotton Cove was in the first game, but in this game it's called Aspen Falls.
8. What does Sonny find at the park?

Answer: Crazy man

At Aspen Falls, Sonny finds a man who's taken off all of his clothes except his underwear and warning people about the Bathonians. This man is seriously dangerous and will harm people if Sonny doesn't take care of him.
9. After Sonny arrests the person at Aspen Falls, what must he do before booking him?

Answer: Search him

In all of Jim Walls' "Police Quest" games, Sonny should put his gun in his locker before going to jail. However, in this game it won't kill him if he doesn't. The jailer will just scold him and fine him and hold onto his gun for him. Only in "Police Quest 1" does Sonny get killed if he brings his gun into the jail with him.

Sonny wears a spare badge under his main badge at all times, so he does not need to get his other badge back when the crazy man throws it in the water.

He does not need to help the crazy man back into his clothes. However, he must search what little clothes the crazy man is wearing. The crazy man is carrying a knife in his underwear, and if Sonny doesn't confiscate it, then when he gets the crazy man in his cell, the crazy man will kill the jailer and the game will end.
10. What's the second law-breaking civilian Sonny must deal with?

Answer: A pregnant woman refusing to sign a ticket

After Sonny is through with the crazy man, the jailer tells him that he's gotten a call that someone wants a supervisor for a civilian refusing to sign a ticket. Sonny gets on the highway to check this out. Sure enough, the cop asking for the supervisor turn out to be Pat Morales, dealing with a pregnant woman who won't sign a ticket because Pat was being rude to her.
11. Should Sonny incarcerate the second law-breaking citizen?

Answer: No

This is where you have to follow police procedure in the manual. According to the manual, if a violator refuses to sign a ticket you should put him or her in jail UNLESS the violator is pregnant or elderly. If the violator is pregnant or elderly, then you should call the supervisor (which Pat Morales did and you are the supervisor). As the supervisor, the manual says you should investigate personnel complaints and make the decisions the would reflect most favorably on the police department. When you talk to the pregnant woman, you learn that the reason she isn't signing the ticket is because Pat Morales was being rude to her. It's pretty easy to believe the pregnant woman on this one. Sonny had already dealt with a complaint regarding Pat Morales at the beginning of the game, and when he arrives at this scene, Pat's being rude to him again. Thus, the game decides that incarcerating a pregnant woman and letting a dirty cop like Pat Morales have her way would reflect terribly on the police department.

If you incarcerate the pregnant woman, then according to the game, the excitement and trauma will be more than enough to induce the woman's labor. The woman will sue the police department for $100,000, Sonny will get non-compensated days off, and the game will end.

If you find this ridiculous, you are not alone.
12. Which driver do you have to pull over in order to beat the game?

Answer: Slow driver

When you're on highway patrol, after you're done with the pregnant woman, you will run into all four of these guys. You will get points for pulling most of them over. But you do not have to pull any of them over to beat the game except the slow driver. This is puzzle based on game design and makes no sense story-wise. The game is designed so that you won't be able to enter the courthouse until after you've pulled over the slow driver. You will need to go to the courthouse a few times during the game. The first time you should go there is on day four when the slow driver protests his ticket in court. If you don't pull over the slow driver, you obviously won't need to go to the courthouse then. But regardless of whether you pull him over or not, you will need to go to the courthouse on day six to obtain a search warrant. Unfortunately, and this makes no sense at all, if you never pulled over the slow driver at the beginning of the game, then you can't get into the courthouse at the end. Thus, if you don't pull over the slow driver at the beginning of the game, you can continue all the way to the end of the game, and then you'll be stuck. Lots of people who play Sierra adventure games refer to moments like this as "Sierra cruelty." This may be the most cruel thing Sierra has ever done. You make one mistake at the beginning of the game and it makes the game unwinnable, but you won't find out until the end. Then, when you get to the point where you're stuck, there is no way in the world you could guess what you did wrong. Thankfully, in this day and age we have the internet, where you can find people who know. Still, you'll have to restore all the way back almost to the beginning and learn how to pull drivers over. Then, while learning how to pull people over isn't super-hard, if you played the VGA "Police Quest 1" not the EGA, it is a little trickier than you might expect or be used to. Speaking of "Police Quest 1," in that game you never get stuck if you didn't pull someone over (you just forfeited points). Why would it be different this time? To me, this and the "Rumplestiltskin" puzzle of "King's Quest 1" are the epitome of Sierra cruelty.

The drunk driver is a complicated situation. He will always be the last of these four drivers that you meet, and there is a cut scene that is meant to happen after you get the drunk driver in jail. And you can lose the game if you don't deal with him. However, you will only lose the game if you pull him over, then leave without doing anything with him. If you don't pull him over at all, you'll be fine. The cut scene will just happen randomly at some point while you are driving on the road. The only bad thing that happens is you forfeit points.

If you don't pull over the speeder you'll not lose the game. In addition, you can pull him over and not give him a ticket and you will not lose the game. However, if you want a perfect score you have to give him a ticket.

The black car is an undercover cop car. You should not pull him over.
13. What happens in the cut scene?

Answer: Marie gets attacked

At some point during day one, hopefully after you book the drunk driver, Marie will get attacked by two strange men at her car after she gets off of work at the Oak Tree Mall. She will be taken to the hospital where doctors will desperately try to save her life. Sonny will be informed and he will arrive on the scene.

When he sees what has happen to his wife, he will get in the ambulance with her. Then for the rest of the game, he will be trying to help her and bring the attackers to justice.
14. Who or what will you see on the way to the hospital that you shouldn't see any other time except the intro?

Answer: Jim Walls

On the way to the hospital, you may get confused, because you will see a screen that is normally the death screen. It's the image of Jim Walls with his foot on a police car. At this point of the game it's just an interlude as he tells you what happens with Marie. You cannot avoid this; even if you skip the intro you will see Jim Walls this one time. If you see him any other time, you lost.

Strangely, he doesn't show up during the ending although it feels like he should. When you get to the ending the game will give you a humorous reason why.
15. There is an item that you must get that you can only get at the beginning of day two. What is this?

Answer: Music Box

Day two will begin with Sonny in his bedroom. The first thing you must do that day: get Marie's music box. Hearing the sound of her music box will help urge Marie to come out of her coma. If you don't get it at the beginning of day two, you won't be able to get it at all which means you won't be able to win the game.

You can also get the Bronze Star early in day two, but ideally it would be preferable to get at on day one. If you have the flashlight with batteries in it, then once you return to the crime scene after following Marie to the hospital, you can search the area for evidence. You'll find the bronze star. Then your day two will be quick and easy.

You get the other two items later in the game.
