Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Mario has been in numerous games in many Nintendo systems, but in the game "Mario is Missing!" for the SNES, Luigi finally took center-stage. Who helps Luigi search for Mario in this game?

Answer: Yoshi

Sure, not many people were fond of this game, seeing as it was one of Nintendo's first chances at combining fun characters in a game with an educational value, but the game has it's charms. It's kind of like a "Carmen Sandiego" game, only Mario is sucked into a spiraling vortex, and Luigi is forced to look for him through various exotic (heh) locations while fighting bosses.

At every location, not only do you fight bosses, but you search for stolen and hidden artifacts while engaging in amusing conversations with local residents.

Not only that, but after each recovered artifact, you'll receive a picture of that artifact (wow, what a prize!). The game was also available on the PC and the NES systems, and Nintendo didn't make an educational Mario game again...until "Mario Teaches Typing" was released on the PC. :P
2. Rand Miller's famous "Myst" series revolutionized graphics when it was first released. After the first "Myst" was released in 1993, "Riven" was released in 1997, and "Myst III: Exile" was released in 2001. Was "Myst 4: Revelation" released before "Myst: Uru"?

Answer: No

"Myst: Uru" was released in September 2003 and its expansion packs "To D'ni" and "The Path of the Shell" were released shortly after. "Myst 4: Revelation" was released one year after, and the final "Myst" chapter, "End of Ages", was released in September 2005.

The "Uru" game greatly changed how many viewed the "Myst" series. Instead of the same types of movements in the original games, "Uru" allowed players to create their own avatar and control it in large 3D realms. When "Uru Live" was introduced, it allowed players to use these avatars online with other users in one MMORPG. Over the years, the "Myst" series has spawned comics, novels, satires, and many other interesting things.

This game was viewed as one of the most popular PC games heading into the new millennium.
3. Another popular PC game has been the Maxis hit, "The Sims". On the original "Sims" game, players were always kept wondering because Maxis sent out an expansion pack about every five or six months. This came to a halt when "The Sims 2" was only a few months from being released to the public. What was the final "Sims 1" expansion pack?

Answer: Makin' Magic

Over the months, players were able to fix up their houses, maintain careers, gain social relationships, travel around the neighborhood, go on dates, go on vacations, own pets, become stars, and make magic. Sure, plenty of the items were unrealistic (like the genie lamp of "Livin' Large"), but they provided endless hours of entertainment.

After collecting every expansion, or mixing and matching a few favourites, players could choose from a wide variety of objects to place wherever they felt like building something new. Of course, Sims would have to balance everything out, and pursue only certain goals in order to succeed. When "The Sims 2" was released, the game was basically upgraded from to to bottom. New items were introduced, new characters, new features, and more. Of course, there's always more expansions.
4. One game which didn't quite achieve fame for the Xbox was "Black Stone: Magic and Steel". The game allowed up to four players to work co-operatively and defeat the evil monsters and bosses of each level in an RPG. Which was not a class that players could choose to be in the game?

Answer: Wizard

Rather than Wizards, teams could choose to be Warlocks. Each character has his/her own special moves which are unique to that character class, and you could make your character even more of an individual by enchanting your weapons with fire, ice, or lightning powers. Players could also use magic scrolls to attack enemies, and they could also have 'elementals' which would follow players around and attack enemies.

After certain levels, players could possibly unlock new characters, and within each level you could find upgrades.

The game had many levels, and it was basically a good multiplayer RPG (one of only a few for the Xbox).
5. At about the same time that "Mario Kart 64" was released for the Nintendo 64, "Diddy Kong Racing" hit the shelves. The game was much more adventurous than "Mario Kart 64". What did players receive at the end of each non-boss and non-secret track as a reward (if they won)?

Answer: A balloon

These balloons could be used to open up new tracks along the way. In this game, you could choose a character, and work your way through the different tracks in each different world in order to defeat the evil Wizpig who has taken over Timber's Island. With cheats, two players could race co-operatively (and even as the same character). Up to four players could play the normal tracks when the were unlocked.

This game had more features than "Mario Kart 64" which was basically required players to compete in race after race.
6. "Donkey Kong" games have become increasingly popular over the years, but this question takes us back to the SNES. In the "Donkey Kong Country" series, we began with Donkey and Diddy saving the banana hoard, but in the second game, Donkey was kidnapped. When this happened, Diddy recruited Dixie Kong to tag along, but in the third game, K. Rool struck again. This time, both Donkey and Diddy Kong were taken. Who did Dixie bring with her in "Donkey Kong Country 3"?

Answer: Kiddy Kong

Ha! Kiddy Kong! Now that was a surprise. After the first game, where both of the playable characters were nearly identical, Dixie was released in "Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy Kong's Quest" with her unique helicopter spin (performed with her long hair). What can Kiddy do in "Donkey Kong Country 3? Well, he basically throws his weight around. Literally. Kiddy Kong is much chubbier than the Kongs in the earlier games, and he can use his weight to break wood floors, throw Dixie very far, and smash enemies to pieces.

His weight was probably surpassed by Chunky Kong from "Donkey Kong 64". The "Donkey Kong Country" games were re-released on the Game Boy Advance from 2003 to 2005.
7. Handheld systems have produced and re-released many popular titles over the years, and it's only natural that new handheld systems are released with new technology. What is not a version of the Game Boy that has been released over the years?

Answer: Game Boy DS

The DS system was released after these three Game Boy systems were released, and it wasn't actually a Game Boy system. The DS is a revolutionary handheld system since it is the first system to be released with not only a regular screen, but a touch-screen as well. To operate the touch screen, you could use a stylus (or in some games, your fingers).

This was released around the same time as the popular Sony PSP system which allowed buyers to play special movies on them as well as games and such. You could even go onto a web browser to surf the net.
8. One of the most popular games for the PC in the beginning of the new millennium has been "Diablo 2", the well-known, award-winning game by Blizzard Entertainment. As the title shows, Diablo is a major antagonist in the game, but with the "Lord of Destruction" expansion pack, he's no longer the final boss. What is the name of this character who replaced Diablo as the boss of the final act?

Answer: Baal

"Diablo 2" was a popular game not only because of its great graphics, seemingly-endless gameplay, fun quests, characters and abilities, but it was also famous because of its ability to hook up to the internet through Battle.net. This allowed friends, and strangers to battle or work together in a huge cyber-world full of evil and strange wonders.

Not only that, but Open Battle.net and TC/IP allowed players to use their offline characters online. Not only could players show off their rare and unique items and strong characters, but they could also get help with quests. "Lord of Destruction" was the only expansion for this game, but gamers were not disappointed.

Included were new enemies and bosses, another act to the storyline, and two new characters; the druid and the assassin. Of course, Blizzard Entertainment has made many famous games since then like the "Warcraft" and "Starcraft" series (both of which are also used on Battle.net), but "Diablo 2" will always have a place in the adventure PC gamer's heart.
9. A popular style of game is the first-person shooter game which allows players to see through the eyes of their character in order to fight their opposition. Which of these games is not regarded as a first-person shooter?

Answer: Super Metroid

First-person shooters have been some of the most popular games ever released. In fact, "Goldeneye", a James Bond game based on a movie of the same name, was one of the most famous games for the Nintendo 64. The game was one of Nintendo's games of the year, and was followed up by one of Rare's famous games, "Perfect Dark" which was also a first-person shooter.

This game was later followed by its sequel, "Perfect Dark Zero" on the Xbox 360. Another popular first-person shooter is "Half-Life", Valve's popular science fiction title.

Its sequel "Half-Life 2" and Valve's other well-known title, "Counter-Strike" have been extremely successful.
10. Over the years, "Final Fantasy" has become an adventure/RPG gamer's popular series. Although many of the "Final Fantasy" games were released for the Sony consoles, one was released on the Nintendo Gamecube in 2004. What was the name of that game?

Answer: Crystal Chronicles

Ha! I was going to make a question about the "Zelda" series, but I decided to go down the road I've traveled on less.

"Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles" was the only "Final Fantasy" game which was released for the Nintendo Gamecube in 2004, but it certainly wasn't the only game in the series to be on a Nintendo system. Some of the very first "Final Fantasy" games were released on the NES and SNES, and many of the newer titles like "Dawn of Souls" and "Tactics Advance" were released on the Game Boy Advance. Plenty have been made on the Nintendo DS as well. Still, many of the more popular, newer "Final Fantasy" titles are held by Sony on its Playstation systems. Many people find that PS1's "Final Fantasy VII" is one of the greatest RPGs ever released, and many find that the graphics on the PS2's "Final Fantasy X and X-2" are well done.
The "Final Fantasy" series also has many famous characters like Sephiroth, Cloud, Squall, Yuna, and more. You might say that the recent "Final Fantasy" games are the Playstation's equivalent of "The Legend of Zelda" popularity-wise.
