Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One Mario villain, which first appeared in the Japanese game "Doki Doki Panic" just happened to shoot eggs at you. This character went on to be a supporting villain, teammate, and playable character in future games. Who is this character?

Answer: Birdo

No one really seems to know what Birdo really is, but many say that she's a dinosaur. Her first game, the Japanese released, "Doki Doki Panic" was later remade into the classic NES game, "Super Mario Bros. 2". In both games, Birdo was found at the end of the different levels and would attack you by shooting either eggs (which never seemed to crack on impact), and/or fireballs depending on whether she was pink, red, or green.

After defeating her, you would usually get a crystal ball that would allow you to continue to the next level. Birdo later appeared in "Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars" (SNES) as a boss and also in "Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga" (GB). On later systems, players could control Birdo is some of the Mario sports-themed games like "Mario Tennis" (N64), "Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour" (GCN), and "Mario Kart: Double Dash" (GCN).

In Japan, she is known as Catherine.
2. In "Pokémon Gold & Silver" (both for Game Boy), your player will receive an egg from Mr. Pokémon, and when you return it to Professor Elm, it is suggested that you take care of it. What does this egg turn out to be?

Answer: Togepi

Togepi is known as a Spike Ball Pokémon, and although this little Pokémon is still inside of its egg, it packs a powerful punch when it uses its Metronome attack. In the game (and the TV series), Togepi evolves into Togetic, the Happiness Pokémon. This evolved Pokémon has the same markings as it once had on its eggshell.
Togepi also appears in "Super Smash Bros. Melee" and you can see it if you throw a random Pokéball.
Throughout the Pokémon games, many other Pokémon can be found in eggs if you breed them with one another.
3. In "Banjo-Kazooie" and "Banjo-Tooie" (both for N64), the bird character, Kazooie, was able to shoot a variety of eggs from fire, to grenade, to ice and clockwork. What colours were the basic, regular shooting eggs in both games?

Answer: Blue

No, Kazooie was never a robin; she's a breegull. The fact that Kazooie could shoot blue eggs was merely a coincidence. In "Banjo-Kazooie", Kazooie learns to shoot eggs in the very first level, Mumbo's Mountain, and they are used to defeat enemies, get Jiggys, and hit switches.

After beating the game, "Banjo-Tooie" begins, and you begin the game already knowing how to shoot eggs. Only this time, you learn to shoot with a cross-hair, and you obtain different types of eggs from around the Isle of Hags. Unlike Birdo's eggs, these eggs will crack open on impact, or in the case of the Grenade Eggs, they will explode on impact.
4. Sure, many games contain eggs, but not actual, oval-shaped, visible eggs. What do many call hidden features or hidden rewards in video games?

Answer: Easter eggs

Easter eggs aren't only found on Easter anymore. Now, they can be found in many things from video games to DVD menus. The fact that these are called Easter eggs is because you have to hunt for them, and in the end, the result is a reward. Many games from many different system feature these.

Some interesting ones are the Evil Cow armies in "Diablo 2" (PC), the hidden rooms in "Link to the Past" (SNES, GBA), and an actual Easter egg in "Grand theft Auto: Vice City" (PS2, XBOX).
5. In "Paper Mario" (N64), not only can Mario eat eggs to replenish his HP or MP, but one character is also closely linked to the egg. As a matter of fact, he's still in his. Who is this character?

Answer: Jr. Troopa

Jr. Troopa is the first enemy that Mario fights in the game (excluding Bowser), and although he may be easy the first time you fight him, be gets a little more difficult each following time you fight him. As the game progresses, Jr. Troopa can raise his defense by hiding in his shell, growing a spike on his shell, using wings, and by using a magic wand.

In "Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door" (GCN), Mario finds a Yoshi egg, and that Yoshi later becomes a party member.
6. In "Super Smash Bros. Melee" (GCN), the egg is well-known. What can not be found within these eggs?

Answer: A Bob-omb

The eggs are basically a larger capsule, and both usually contain the same things. Occasionally, you can use the eggs to replenish your health, and occasionally they can explode when you throw them. Although these eggs can randomly drop, you can also get eggs from a Pokéball containing a Chansey. The egg also has its own trophy! To collect it, you must either win it from the trophy lottery or find it in one-player mode.
This egg originally appeared in "Super Smash Bros." for the Nintendo 64.
7. Yoshi the dinosaur is another famous character from "Mario" games, and it's not a surprise that he should come from an egg. What pattern can be found on a Yoshi egg?

Answer: Dots

The Yoshi egg is most commonly see with a white background and different coloured dots depending on what colour the Yoshi is. In many games, Mario will find Yoshi in his egg form, and he'll have to watch over him until he hatches. This happens in "Super Mario Sunshine" (GCN), and "Super Mario World" (SNES) to name a few. Yoshi also appears in his own games like "Yoshi's Story", and "Yoshi's Cookie"; both of which include his eggs. In some games, depending on which coloured Yoshi you are, you get certain skills.

In "Super Mario World" for example, yellow Yoshis can cause earthquakes, and red Yoshis can shoot fireballs.
8. One game was based entirely around an alien which was born from an egg. Although the game wasn't originally released on any systems, it sold like mad, and became a popular fad in the late nineties as people tried to care for their new little friends. They spawned many competitors such as 'Giga Pets', and were re-released in 2004 with the 'Connection' subtitle. What popular egg toy/game is this?

Answer: Tamagotchi

The original "Tamagotchis" were released on tiny keychains in the shape of an egg, and you controlled everything with only two buttons. You would be able to hatch one, then play games, feed it, clean up after it, and care for it. Although most "Tamagotchis" died within a few weeks, they had many different results. One could start with a simple "Tamagotchi", but then it could turn into one of many different alien creatures. More were added with the "Tamagotchi 2" and "Tamagotchi Connection".
In 1997, "Tamagotchi" was released on the Game Boy, and on the DS nearly nine years later.
9. Yikes! This game is full of eggs! This game solely released on the Gamecube was about a land inhabited by chickens, and the main character had to save the Chicken Elders in order to defeat the Black Crows. Who is the main character of this game?

Answer: Billy Hatcher

The game I'm talking about is called "Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg". In the story, the Black Crows trapped the Chicken Elders in golden eggs and without the crows of these elders, the world stayed in total darkness. Like some "Mario" games, each level contains missions which must be completed, and these missions involve eggs that will give you an advantage such as the Thorn Egg, Chameleon Egg, Egg Bomb, and more.

The game was created by the same individuals who made "Sonic", and it comes with a good multiplayer option.

This game is much like a virtual easter egg hunt with a fun video game twist.
10. Believe it or not, there was a game called "Egg Mania: Eggstreme Madness" for Xbox, Gamecube, Game Boy, and PS2. The game included a few secret characters which could be unlocked. Which of these is not one of those characters?

Answer: Sunny Side-up

Sure, "Egg Mania: Eggstreme Madness" may have been released on many systems, but the game never really caught on despite the fact that it was filled with Eggy goodness. The game looks much like "Tetris" mixed with brick-laying. Basically, it has the same ideas as "Tetris" does, but you stack bricks the whole time, and you try to fill your arena rather than empty it. The characters include a deviled egg, an angelic egg, and even an egg in armor, and you play in areas like Eggolopolis. This game shows that it's cool to play games with eggs!

In the end, it has been proven that eggs have a huge impact on games. Some games like "The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening" revolve around an egg (the Windfish's egg), and some games like "Harvest Moon" simply involve selling or eating eggs. Regardless, eggs play a big part in many games all around the world, so let's 'get cracking' and praise the all-mighty virtual eggs! :P
