Question 1 of 10
1. There are two Blacksmiths in this game- the one at the Nexus who can repair the player's equipment and sell them basic weaponry, and a much more powerful one found in Stonefang Tunnel. The Blacksmith found at Stonefang Tunnel is responsible for converting Boss Souls into weapons or magic. What is this Blacksmith's name? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. It is here that the infamous Patches debuted, and would later go on to appear in many games From Software would make in the future, and he would eventually become a fan favorite. He is infamous because he is a practical trickster, not just trying to scam the player out of their hard earned currency, but meddling with them directly as they travel through the game. What area does Patches play his first and only prank on the player here? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. One of From Software's particularly odd traditions on a game-to-game basis is to include a bird's nest the player can go to in order to trade odd, seemingly random items with a squeaky voice for random, sometimes remarkably powerful, items. This trend began in "Demon's Souls". Who was the name of the voice who deals with the player here? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. If a player is looking to properly put together an Intelligence based spell casting build, they've got some work to do in order to make it work. The first order of business would be to locate the vendor for the Nexus who can sell the player spells they can cast. Unfortunately, this vendor is locked- literally and metaphorically- behind a questline where they'll have to free her from a prison cell within the Tower Knight archstone. Who is this? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. The game's 'questgiver' From Software designed to have a Boss Soul, the Maiden in Black will give this willingly to the player if they end up selecting the 'good ending' at the end of the game. What can the Maiden in Black Soul be converted into other than souls? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. One particular NPC has some fairly dark thoughts about others, most of which found in the Nexus. This character will, upon initially being approached, ask that the player kill various other NPCs. If the player continuously obliges, she will then ask that the player kill themselves- growing hostile and forcing the player's hand in killing her. Who is this? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. This character is also not terribly fond of other NPCs. Thankfully, you could opt to tame this character's nasty ambitions by simply refraining from freeing them from a locked cell found at the Tower of Latria. If you do free him, though, he will kill an NPC at random moving forward every time the player wins a boss fight, so the player will probably want to deal with him swiftly. Who is this? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. This NPC was a real doozy as one of if not the single hardest fights the player will encounter in the entire game. To top things off, he's found as early on as the tutorial level! This retired demigod must be approached and his request completed so that the player may receive the mighty Demonbrandt sword. Who is this? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. The Magic Sword "Makoto" is unique for having very high base damage and an extremely good bleed stat, with a drawback of having absolutely zero scaling and inflicting self bleed into the player when equipped. As a powerful weapon with equally powerful drawbacks, it is likely to be just as enticing as it is hard to find. What NPC's questline will end with the player getting this weapon? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. A major cornerstone of From Software games in general is the progression process- the means the player has of leveling up. In this game, that job belongs to an NPC. Who is it? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

Answer: Ed

Blacksmith Ed is an elderly, abrasive man who is available as soon as the player figures out how to reach him. Given that Stonefang Tunnel was scaled for an early level, this can be done pretty quickly in a player's playthrough of the game.

Answer: Shrine of Storms

Here, Patches will simply kick the player, unaware, into a locked room with a Dark Spirit inside who will aggressively attack as soon as the player resumes control of their character. This can be prevented by simply killing Patches in the Nexus before going to the Shrine of Storms.

Answer: Sparkly the Crow

Sparkly the Crow will accept "shiny" items in exchange for a wide variety of rewards, stemming from simple arrows for ammunition into Boss Souls, upgrade tools, powerful weapons and more. When the game was remade for the PS5, Sparkly's array of items to trade and items the player could give her increased. She can be found at the Shrine of Storms.

Answer: Yuria the Witch

Not to be confused with Yuria of Londor from "Dark Souls 3".

Yuria the Witch is locked inside a cell, and the only way to reach this cell has the potential to be a bit frustrating. The player needs to continuously kill a pair of Fat Officials found in Stonefang Tunnel; they'll eventually need to loot their entire cosmetic set, each piece having a roughly 5% chance to drop once a Fat Official is killed. This can be raised by equipping the Large Sword of Searching and using a Ceramic Coin to increase the player's Luck stat; doing both of these things will bring the odds up to 9% from 5%, and if the player's Luck stat is 20 or higher, they can begin to slightly increase their odds further.

Once the set is obtained, the player must equip it and then venture into the prison found within the Tower Archstone. Having the set equipped will 'trick' the Fat Official guarding the prison, who will lower a drawbridge to allow the player to enter the prison. Once the player is in, they must kill this Fat Official, unequip the cosmetic set, and then free Yuria using the key looted off of this Fat Official. Once they've done so and then exhausted her dialogue, she will permanently take up residence in the Nexus and can freely sell the player spells for use.
5. The game's 'questgiver' From Software designed to have a Boss Soul, the Maiden in Black will give this willingly to the player if they end up selecting the 'good ending' at the end of the game. What can the Maiden in Black Soul be converted into other than souls?

Answer: Soulsucker

When used, the player unsurprisingly drains souls from their target. Against a PvE, AI controlled enemy, if this spell kills, the player will receive twice the souls they ordinarily would've received. In PvP is where things get interesting; the user won't receive any souls for using it in PvP, but what they will do is steal away an entire level from their target if it manages to hit- this is similar to and quite possibly the same thing Old King Allant uses in his boss fight, though his iteration has significantly higher range and deals more damage.

In order to get the 'good ending' required to get the Maiden in Black Soul, the player must defeat True King Allant, then all they have to do is literally not go out of their way to kill Maiden in Black after dealing with Allant- they can then play the game normally and get the correct ending. Killing Maiden in Black after defeating True King Allant will permanently lock the player out of the 'good ending' and make it impossible to get her soul, thus forcing them to complete another whole playthrough if they want to get Soulsucker.

The unfortunate aspect of Soulsucker is that, because obtaining an ending forces the player into New Game +, they'll have to go to the lengthy, potentially frustrating effort of unlocking Yuria the Witch, who's the only character in the game capable of converting the Maiden in Black Soul into Soulsucker. As such, Soulsucker is the only Boss Soul weapon that cannot be available to the player once they acquire the requisite soul for it.

Answer: Mephistopheles

Mephistopheles, upon finishing her questline and dying, will drop the player her cosmetic set along with the Ring of the Accursed- this is the only way to obtain this ring, and is necessary to earn the Platinum trophy for the game. Having said that, she will drop just the Ring of Accursed if the player simply murders her without completing her questline, so it isn't necessary to finish this in order to Platinum.

Mephistopheles will ask that the player kill Saint Urbain, Sage Freke, Patches, Biorr, Ostrava and Yuria in that order. In order to get a reward for each killing, the player must go to the assigned NPC, kill them, then return to Mephistopheles; if they go and kill all six of the aforementioned characters and then talk to Mephistopheles, she would only reward the player for their most recent kill and not any of the others.

Answer: Yurt the Silent Chief

Once Yurt has been freed, the next time the player returns to the Nexus, they'll notice two unidentifiable corpses are at the bottom of each staircase leading to the Archstones. From there on out, every time the player defeats a boss, Yurt will kill off NPCs found at the Nexus.

He begins with Sage Freke's apprentice, takes out Patches, eliminates Saint Urbain, finishes off Freke himself, kills Yuria if the player brought her to the Nexus, and will then go after the player themselves. Killing Yurt is needed to access Mephistopheles' questline
8. This NPC was a real doozy as one of if not the single hardest fights the player will encounter in the entire game. To top things off, he's found as early on as the tutorial level! This retired demigod must be approached and his request completed so that the player may receive the mighty Demonbrandt sword. Who is this?

Answer: Old King Doran

Old King Doran is not initially hostile towards the player. In fact, upon meeting them, he will quite literally stand there and challenge the player to prove themselves by attacking him until he's at half health. Once done, he will give them the Demonbrandt. Further interaction with him doesn't actually earn the player anything, but if they decide to continue attacking him, he will heal himself to full and begin to fight back.

His sword, the Northern Regalia, is so devastatingly strong that even the tankiest of tanky builds will get killed in two hits, while anything else will get demolished in one fell swoop.

Answer: Sensei Satsuki

Satsuki will begin the questline by requesting the player locate the Makoto and then deliver it to him. Interacting with him to get this dialogue is mandatory, as the area within Shrine of Storms where the Makoto is found isn't accessible until speaking with Satsuki. Hypothetically, this is all the involvement with Satsuki that he player needs to have to get access to the Makoto. Once they get the Makoto, they could easily just keep it and refrain from speaking with him again.

However, should they want to continue the questline, bringing him the Makoto has one simple ending- he will attack the player, and upon killing him, he will drop the Makoto.

This is the case even if the player hands it over the first time he asks and does nothing to draw his ire.
10. A major cornerstone of From Software games in general is the progression process- the means the player has of leveling up. In this game, that job belongs to an NPC. Who is it?

Answer: Maiden in Black

The Maiden in Black is essentially the player's guide, and is mainly responsible for administering level ups. As with all games, the player can level up as many times as they have the souls to pay for. The more they level up, the costlier it gets.
