Answer: Police officer

Max Payne is a NYPD officer turned vigilante following the gruesome murders of his family and partner. He is also an undercover officer for the DEA. After being framed for the crime, Payne goes on the run and must fight to save his own life and clear his name.

In subsequent games, Payne finds himself all over the world (usually in seedy places) uncovering secrets, fighting criminals and performing other illicit actions.
3. Hershel Layton ("Layton" series)

Answer: Archeology professor

Professor Layton is an archeology professor at England's Gressenheller University who often travels around solving supernatural mysteries and solving puzzles. Many of the mysteries relate to ancient civilizations and their artefacts which Layton is familiar with.

His apprentice is Luke Triton and the two are often accompanied by a young female companion as well. Layton has a daughter, Katrielle, who has her own spinoff series where she is a private detective.
4. Maya Fey ("Ace Attorney" series)

Answer: Spirit medium

Maya is the legal assistant to the titular "Ace Attorney", Phoenix Wright, a defense lawyer. However, Maya does not have any legal experience. She is actually a spirit medium and one of the best mediums around. She often channels the spirit of her older sister, Mia, who was Phoenix's mentor before she was murdered. Both Maya and the channeled Mia provide advice to Phoenix when he gets cornered during trial.
5. Link ("Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Wii))

Answer: Ranch hand

Through his many appearances in "The Legend of Zelda" series, Link has held quite a few positions. When "Twilight Princess" begins, Link lives in the quiet, idyllic Ordon Village where he works as a ranch hand. There is a minigame Link can partake in that involves herding goats into their pen for the night.

Other careers Link has held in the games are knight, student and soldier.
6. You, the player character ("Animal Crossing: New Leaf" (3DS))

Answer: Mayor

In the early installments of the "Animal Crossing" series, the mayor of the town was Tortimer. However, Tortimer has retired by "New Leaf" and the player character becomes the mayor almost immediately upon arrival. The mayor is in charge of laying out the town such as were to build landmarks and decorations.

He or she is also in charge of opening major places such as stores. However, most of the mayor's duties are completed by Isabelle, the mayor's assistant, or completed within a relatively quick period of time.

The player usually spends most of his or her time decorating their home or doing favors for the other villagers.
7. Gordon Freeman ("Half Life" series)

Answer: Theoretical physicist

Gordon Freeman was a mild mannered physicist whose research team accidentally created a rift in dimensions and released aliens onto Earth. Soon the entire state of Georgia is overwhelmed with zombies and Lee meets up with a group of people trying to survive and find safety.
10. Jill Valentine ("Resident Evil" series)

Answer: Special Forces

Jill Valentine is one of the first major playable female characters in video games when she debuted in 1996 in the game "Resident Evil" for PlayStation. She is a member of the U.S. Special Forces who fights zombies and the creators, a pharmaceutical company. Unlike the scarce female characters in video games at the time, Valentine was created to appeal to girls and women and was intentionally not sexualized, as was often seen in many games at the time.

Instead, she is portrayed as tough, independent woman equal to her male counterparts.
