Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's start with some games that are In Other Words. Each of the words in the title has been replaced with a synonym, so if you get stuck, feel free to grab a thesaurus. Mother preparing food

Answer: cooking mama

"Cooking Mama" is a Nintendo DS game where players cook various dishes by completing a range of tasks, such as chopping, frying, slicing and mixing. Each task within a dish is usually accompanied by a timer, indicating how long left to complete that task - for example, there might be a 10-second timer for chopping onions. Medals are awarded upon completion of each dish, depending on how well the player did in each of the tasks.
2. Another game In Other Words. Take your time and have a think. Champion of a stringed instrument

Answer: guitar hero

Harmonix released "Guitar Hero" in America in 2005, as a way of bringing a guitar-based game like "GuitarFreaks" to that area of the world. The unique guitar controller allows players to simulate playing an actual guitar. Players must match the notes on-screen on the note highway by pressing the corresponding button(s) on the frets and strumming at the same time.

The game has been hugely successful with many official sequels, and many other spin-offs including games focusing on the songs of one band. Harmonix developed the first two games, but handed over the reins to other companies for future titles.
3. One last game that is In Other Words. This one shouldn't be too difficult! Necessity for velocity

Answer: need for speed

"The Need for Speed" was the first title in the eponymous series, released for 3DO, DOS, PlayStation, Sega Saturn and Windows in 1994. The premise of the game, and indeed the series, is racing in sports cars through cities and country. The game was praised for its realism and and attention to detail. Since then, there have been numerous sequels and spin-offs for a variety of platforms which firmly establish it as one of the most popular racing series.
4. Okay, let's tackle a Hidden Word puzzle! The title of a video game is hidden in the sentence below. You, my friend, must have a good look through it and see if you can find the game. Some may gasp or even squeal with delight when they play this game created by the company who made "The Sims".

Answer: spore

Maxis is known for its hugely popular and best-selling life-simulation game, "The Sims". Now, Maxis has created "Spore", a game in which the player creates an entire species from scratch, and makes it evolve and grow through a variety of ways. From humble beginnings as a microscopic organism to a fully-fledged space-exploring culture, "Spore" is, quite simply, massive.

The game is following in the footsteps of its predecessor, garnering a large amount of praise for its innovative gameplay, although during its initial release, there was huge amount of controversy over the implementation of DRM (Digital Rights Management).
5. Now let's move on to some anagrams. The words in capitals will need to be anagrammed to get the name of a video game. Note that 'I' does not count towards the anagram. I will NOT be SENDING Nintendo some hate mail, because I absolutely loved this pet simulation game for the Nintendo Dual Screen handheld console.

Answer: nintendogs

Three versions of "Nintendogs" were released for the Nintendo DS in 2005, and have proved to be highly successful for the Japanese games manufacturer. The basis of the gameplay in "Nintendogs" is to care for and interact with a virtual dog, using the touch screen and microphone on the DS. Petting, brushing, and walking can all be achieved by using the stylus and interacting with the touch screen.

The microphone can be used to train the dog to respond to its name, and also to perform actions, such as sitting and rolling over.

The three original titles featured dachshunds, chihuahuas and labradors.
6. One more anagram puzzle for you to sink your teeth into. Just rearrange the letters of the words in capitals to get a video game. Some DERIVE SILENT pleasure from playing survival-horror games, none more so than the first game in this Capcom-developed series.

Answer: resident evil

Regarded as one of the most influential games in the survival-horror genre, Capcom's 1996 game "Resident Evil" (or "Biohazard", as it is known in Japan) was released for the PlayStation. The game takes place in a mansion infested by zombies and mutant creatures, where Alpha Team of the Raccoon City Police Department's Special Tactics and Rescue Service are sent to investigate the disappearance of Bravo Team. Borrowing gameplay aspects from "Alone in the Dark", "Resident Evil" has received praise from critics, with some rating the 2002 GameCube remake as even better than the original.

The game is the first in the main series, with seven titles in total in the series as of 2009.
7. Still hungry for more? Then how about some Fractured Words! These are quite simple - just say what you see. A game should spring to the front of your mind. Spire Other Drag Gone

Answer: spyro the dragon

The "Spyro" series has been one of the most popular on the PlayStation consoles, with the first game in the series, "Spyro the Dragon", developed by Insomniac Games in 1998, who are famous for the "Ratchet and Clank" and "Resistance" series. The player takes control of a young purple dragon called Spyro, in his quest to rescue the five great dragon families from their crystal slumbers and defeat Gnasty Gnorc.

Insomniac continued to develop the series, releasing "Ripto's Rage"/"Gateway to Glimmer" in 1999 and "Year of the Dragon" in 2000.

After this game, Insomniac sold the rights to "Spyro" to Universal Interactive Studios.
8. Here, have another Fractured Word puzzle. Again, say what you see out loud, and you will soon have a video game title typed into the box below. Soup Arm Aria Whirled

Answer: super mario world

Everyone's favourite dinosaur with an appetite for anything made his first appearance in "Super Mario World" in 1990. Yoshi joined Mario and Luigi on their adventure through Dinosaur Land to rescue Princess Peach from the clutches of Bowser. According to Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of the "Mario" series and many others, said that he wanted Mario to have a dinosaur pal since his first platform adventure in "Super Mario Bros.", but due to the graphical limitations of the NES, it just wasn't possible.

However, with the arrival of the SNES, the now-familiar green dinosaur made his first appearance in "Super Mario World", eating all sorts of enemies and fruit, with Mario on his back.
9. Alas, we are coming to the end of this wordplay journey, but I still have two more puzzles for you, this time in the form of rebus. Each of the words in the game title have been replaced with a definition or synonym, so you'll have to work them out, put them together, and hey presto! Another game. Last + illusion + the number that people with triskaidekaphobia are afraid of

Answer: final fantasy 13

After first being shown at E3 in 2006, "Final Fantasy XIII" was finally released in late 2009 in Japan, and early 2010 elsewhere, for the XBox 360 and PlayStation 3. The game takes place in two worlds - Pulse and Cocoon, where godlike beings known as the fal'Cie oversee the population. Citizens of Cocoon are prohibited from having contact with anything from Pulse, and if caught, will be exiled.

The familiar command-based gameplay that is a staple of the series returns with a new addition - the Paradigm Shift.

The Paradigm Shift allows the player to change their role in the battle at any time (the roles being Commander, Medic, Ravager, Saboteur, Sentinel and Synergist in English localizations). As of April 2010, the game has shipped over 5 million copies worldwide.
10. One more rebus puzzle before I let you go. Again, work out the definitions to the words, string them together, and you'll have a video game sitting prettily in the text box below. Riposte + to knock down all ten bowling pins at once

Answer: counter strike

Originally a mod for "Half-Life", "Counter-Strike" has evolved into a full series. The game is a first-person shooter where two teams, the terrorists and the counter-terrorists, fight to complete an objective first or to kill the other team. A variety of maps and weapons are available, each with their pros and cons.

The game is among the top played modifications for "Half-Life", due to the sheer number of people who play it. "Counter-Strike" has also been used by police officers in the Chinese city of Tianjin as part of tactical training.
