Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One of the new aircraft added in "AirLand Battle" is the F-117 Nighthawk Stealth Bomber.

Answer: True

A plethora of aircraft have been added to "Wargame" in this installment, including everything from fast interceptors (to shoot down enemy planes), anti-radar planes (to kill enemy long-range Anti-Aircraft weapons), and even the F-117 "Nighthawk" stealth bomber, which is great for hitting targets deep behind enemy lines.

The F-117 is completely invisible to the enemy until it drops its massive 1-ton laser-guided bomb, which enables it to strike high-value targets virtually anywhere on the map. It can still get shot down on its way out though, so it's best to use it either to take out a key AA position or to strike where no enemy AA is present.
2. Where do the single-player campaigns take place?

Answer: Scandinavia

The single-player campaigns depict several different hypothetical wars taking place in Scandinavia during the late 20th century, between NATO and PACT forces. During the campaign, you'll need to make high-level strategic decisions, such as moving troops, introducing new divisions to the area, and carrying out various types of attack against the enemy in order to slow them down or weaken their resolve.

Whenever two armies meet, the game switches to the familiar combat mode to play out the encounter.
3. Except for artillery, which category does the longest-ranged weapon in the game belong to?

Answer: Air-to-air missile

With the addition of aircraft, it is now possible to have them shoot at each other. Calling in an interceptor in time to shoot down an enemy plane can save a whole lot of your troops (especially high-end ones, which is what aircraft are usually sent to attack), and some aircraft can do so at incredibly long ranges. The F-14's Phoenix missile and the MiG-31M's Vympel missile can both fire at up to 11,900 meters from their target. The next-longest ranged missiles are SEAD missiles (for taking out enemy radar-guided anti-aircraft weapons).

Of course, the longest-range weapons in the game are all artillery weapons, with the Soviet SMERCH rocket launcher being able to hit targets at 52,500 meters. Most artillery, however, is very inaccurate at these ranges.
4. Which Main Battle Tank has the highest front armor rating in the game?

Answer: T-80U

The behemoth that is the T-80U is one of the most dangerous units in the game. Capable of launching anti-tank missiles at very long range, as well as firing accurately when motionless and defeating armor-piercing weaponry quite easily, the T-80U's appearance on the battlefield may cause NATO commanders to run screaming.

However, like most Soviet tanks the T-80U has problems engaging while on the move, and like all tanks it is vulnerable to attacks from the sides and rear. Furthermore, with the introduction of ground-attack aircraft, a T-80U can easily be taken out by a sudden airstrike - preferably with guided missiles like the Maverick.

It is so expensive that destroying even a single T-80U can constitute a major blow to the PACT forces.
5. The supply vehicle with the largest fuel capacity in the game is a gigantic helicopter.

Answer: True

The Mi-26 is the largest supply vehicle in the game, carrying a whopping 5000 liters of fuel capacity - more than twice as much as a Super-Chinook and three times more than a HEMTT - and it is still pretty fast compared to ground-based logistical units. Of course, a PACT commander calling in this beast will need to pay almost as much for a single Mi-26 as for a modern main battle tank, so discretion is necessary. Exposing an Mi-26 to enemy fire is a very, very bad idea.
6. Of the following recon vehicles, which has the best optics?

Answer: BRM-1

Every unit in the game has an "Optics" rating, which determines the distance at which it can spot various enemy units, particularly if they are hiding in the terrain. Accompanying a combat force with good recon units will ensure that the enemy can't surprise you - whether with an ambush or with sneaky maneuvers. Most often, it is helicopters which have the best optics ratings, but they are also very vulnerable to enemy Anti-Air fire. Small ground recon vehicles with great optical equipment - like the Rover Pinky, UAZ AGS, or BRM-1 - can both easily keep up with the main force and detect enemies from impressive distances without exposing themselves too much.
7. What sort of bonus do you get for choosing only units designed prior to 1975? (Category C units)

Answer: +40% Unit availability

By using only pre-1975 units in your deck, you get to have +40% as many units to deploy during combat - though each individual vehicle or infantry unit will be far weaker than what the enemy is likely to field. Quantity over quality. The result is masses of cheap units, which can be used to overwhelm even powerful enemy prototypes, if used properly. Experienced opponents, however, will usually keep several units in their decks specifically designed to stop rushes, so this doesn't always work as planned.

There are few or no "overpowered" deck builds in "AirLand Battle".
8. Which is the only deck "type" that gets an experience level bonus for jet aircraft?

Answer: Marine deck

There are six deck "types" (not including the default "no type" deck) that will restrict which units you can choose, but provide different bonuses to certain unit types you do take. The Marine deck, for example, provides an extra experience level to each infantry and aircraft unit you field, making them all quite powerful and deadly - but severely curtailing the number of Recon units you can have in your deck as well as limiting your unit choices in several fields (particularly tanks and support vehicles).

The Marine deck type works great for people who love relying on planes supporting a strong infantry assault.
9. You may toggle your helicopters to hover at either low or high altitude. Which of the statements below is FALSE, regarding helicopters hovering at low altitude?

Answer: They can be targeted by ground-to-ground weaponry.

In the original game, helicopters would go low to the ground whenever they stopped, if the ground underneath them was clear (no forests or buildings). In "AirLand Battle", it is possible to tell a helicopter to maintain a higher altitude at all times (this is actually the default). Nonetheless, though helicopters usually function best at a high altitude where they can usually see very far across the field, they can still use low altitude to keep themselves hidden behind terrain features and thus avoid enemy Anti-Aircraft fire and possibly even enemy jets. On the other hand, a low-hovering craft is vulnerable to ground explosions, specifically artillery, if the enemy does indeed spot them. Ground-to-Ground weaponry, such as tank cannons, cannot target helicopters even when they hover so low.
10. What is the name of the original multiplayer 10v10 map that was released with "AirLand Battle"?

Answer: Ragnarok

Playing a 10v10 game can have mixed results, but is a good choice for someone who wants to try their luck in a less stressful combat environment, since the responsibility of each combatant is somewhat lower - everyone shares in a victory or defeat. You can usually confine yourself to fighting in a specific region of the map, making it easier to concentrate on what you're doing, which makes Ragnarok a preferable map for newcomers to the game. On the other hand, it is much harder to organize 10v10 games where you can count on your allies not to abandon the game partway through if they get bored or think they're losing.
