Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where were we when we were recruiting the powerful biotic Jack?

Answer: The Purgatory

Jack was a prisoner on the prison ship Purgatory. She was an extremely violent biotic with what appeared to be no morals. Because she was so powerful, the prison didn't even keep her conscious; she was kept in cryo stasis.

While the Purgatory was well funded by the homeplanets of their inmates, they also sold prisoners for cash. The Illusive Man purchased Jack with Cerberus' massive wealth, so she could be included in Shepard's squad to fight the Collectors.

When Shepard went to the Purgatory to pick up Jack, warden Kuril instead tried to imprison Shepard. The warden explained that Shepard was worth much more as a prisoner than a customer.

Shepard and crew fought their way through the Blue Suns security, and released Jack on their own. When Jack woke up she was furious. She used her powerful biotics to run through the ship to get away, causing massive amounts of damage. There were many sections of the ship that were vented into space, and fires started up everywhere. On top of that, a breakout and prison riot started. Shepard chased Jack through the hordes of angry prisoners and security. After killing the Warden, Shepard was able to recruit Jack.

Incorrect Answers:

Omega was a hub location, where you could recruit squad members, gain loyalty, shop, and talk to interesting folks.

The assignment N7: Captured Mining Facility takes place on Helyme. The Eclipse mercenaries attacked the mining facility for its resources, and Shepard went in to remove them.

The MSV Strontium Mule was a freighter featured in the assignment of the same name. It was captured by the Blue Suns, and Shepard had to clear it of enemies and secure the cargo. The crew had already been killed/executed before Shepard arrived.
2. Where were we when we were trying to recruit the krogan warlord Okeer?

Answer: Korlus

Korlus was a ship graveyard where the Blue Suns had set up a base. Jedore, the local leader, hired the krogan warlord Okeer to create her an army of loyal krogan, much like Saren tried to do in "Mass Effect". Provided she was allowed to live in "Mass Effect", Rana Thanoptis from Saren's Virmire base could be found on Korlus. Okeer used the Blue Suns' funds and facilities for his own purposes, though: to bypass the genophage. Rather than attempting to reverse the genophage, he wanted to create a way to ignore it.

Okeer grew many krogan in tanks for his experiments, and would give the failed test subjects to Jedore. The krogan were never loyal to her, though, so she had her Blue Suns train against them in live-fire exercises.

Eventually Okeer had what he called, "A perfect krogan". Shepard showed up just in time to extract Okeer, but the warlord would not leave without his prize. Jedore also found out about Okeer's treachery, and flooded his lab with toxins. Okeer stayed to secure his final experiment while Shepard and crew went to deal with Jedore. When they returned, they found Okeer dead.

Shepard took the tank with Okeer's final krogan back to the Normandy. If awakened, he would assume the name Grunt, and join the crew of the Normandy.

Incorrect Answers:

Tuchanka was the krogan homeworld, where you could gain the loyalty of both Mordin and Grunt. You could also visit its shops, and talk to Wrex, provided he survived the events of "Mass Effect".

Tarith was home of the assignment N7: Blood Pack Communications Relay. A mining operation had been set up on the planet, with a large communications network. Shepard went in and destroyed the relay network, disrupting the Blood Pack's operation.

The assignment N7: Blood Pack Base took place on Zada Ban. When scanning the planet, a Blood Pack presence was discovered, with signals indicating that the base might be a weapons manufacturing site.
3. Where were we when we were rescuing Tali from the geth?

Answer: Haestrom

As a brilliant and well-known quarian, Tali was given leadership of quarian team to get readings from the planet Haestrom. Haestrom was a former quarian colony, and its sun was acting strange. Tali and her team were detected by a geth patrol ship on approach, and the geth sent troops to eradicate the quarians. The quarians were reduced to a mere handful of individuals by the time Shepard arrived. When Shepard got the the observatory where Tali was trapped, the only marine left was Kal'Reegar. Depending on Shepard's actions, Kal'Reegar could have survived the final fight.

Haestrom's sun was giving off so much energy that standing in the light would deplete shields and barriers. During fights, it was best to fight from the shade when possible.

Incorrect Answers:

The Citadel was a hub location with shops, characters to talk to, and missions to complete.

Canalus was where the assignment N7: Anomalous Weather Detected took place. The geth had set up an operation on the planet, and were experimenting with a weather control device. Shepard went in to disable the device, along with any geth encountered.

The assignment N7: Quarian Crash Site took place on Gei Hinnom. A Quarian ship went down on the planet, and the crew that survived the crash were being hunted by varren. When Shepard arrived, only Lt. Forzan was left. Shepard and the squad had to hold off waves of varren until the extraction shuttle could arrive.
4. Where were we when we were talking to Liara?

Answer: Illium

In the two years since "Mass Effect", Liara set up on Illium. She gave up studying the Protheans, and took up information brokering to help her friends, and "Pay the bills".

Liara was the one who recovered Shepard's body after it had landed on Alchera. She had to race against the Shadow Broker to recover it, making her plenty of enemies, and putting her friends in danger. Liara's friend, Feron, was killed by the Shadow Broker. Liara became an information broker so she could hunt down the Shadow Broker for revenge.

There were two possible side-missions Liara could give you when visiting her on Illium. If you got the Lair of the Shadow Broker DLC, then the Illusive Man forwarded a message to Shepard concerning the Shadow Broker, which Shepard could then pass along to Liara.
5. Where were we when we were reuniting Jacob with his father?

Answer: Aeia

Jacob's father, Ronald, was on a ship that crash-landed on Aeia ten years before "Mass Effect 2". The crew knew they had to repair the distress beacon to signal for help, but found out that it would take about a year. The food stores would not hold out for the entire crew. The officers decided to keep the food for themselves so they could fix the beacon with intact cognitive function. Everyone else had to eat the local flora, which caused neurological decay over prolonged periods. The crew just had to hope that the effects were reversible after they were rescued.

The beacon was repaired in a year, but was not activated. Instead, all the officers died, with the exception of Jacob's father. He horded the good food to himself, and began to rule over the rest of the crew. Eventually the males became aggressive, and Ronald's mechs started to have trouble maintaining security. Ronald finally activated the beacon to save himself.

Incorrect Answers:

Daratar was the location of the assignment N7: Eclipse Smuggling Depot. On Daratar, Shepard and crew found three YMIR mechs destroying the cargo that the Eclipse left behind. Shepard destroyed the mechs in order to save as much of the cargo as possible.

Neith was the location of the assignment N7: Wrecked Merchant Freighter. Shepard went down to the planet to investigate what remained of the ship. During the investigation, hostile mechs started reactivating, and attacked the squad.
6. Where were we when we were recovering a geth mobile platform that can talk?

Answer: Derelict Reaper

The Derelict Reaper was both a story mission and a recruitment mission. Shepard showed up at the Reaper to recover its Identify Friend/Foe (IFF) system, which would allow safe travel through the Omega 4 relay.

While on the Reaper, a geth mobile platform provided covering fire for Shepard and crew. This geth unit also was able to open the door to the Reaper's mass effect core before it was disabled by husks.

After the mass effect core was destabilized, Shepard decided to recover the geth unit. Back on the Normandy the geth unit could be reactivated. If so, then it would assume the name Legion, and join the crew.

Incorrect Answers:

Sinmara was the location of the assignment N7: Endangered Research Station. It was one of the few assignments that Shepard completed alone, and had no fighting. Shepard had to complete an easy puzzel to bring the shields back online to protect the colony from extreme radiation.

Zanethu was the location of the assignment N7: MSV Estivanico. This assignment also had no combat, and had Shepard alone. Shepard was investigating the wreck of the long lost ship MSV Estivanico. It was found that the crew of the Estivanico were probably the first humans to ever encounter the vorcha.
7. Where were we when we were helping Jack destroy her old home?

Answer: Pragia

Jack was raised in a secret Cerberus base on the planet Pragia called the Teltin Facility. At the facility, Cerberus scientists performed experiments to create stronger human biotics. The test subjects were infants or children that Cerberus abducted. Tests would be performed on the other children, and those that yielded positive, non-lethal improvements were implemented on Jack, known as Subject Zero.

Cerberus kept jack in isolation, and she grew a hatred for the other children. A hatred that was mutual. Apart from being turned into a strong biotic, Cerberus also trained Jack to relish the fight and the kill. She would be brought out of her room only to be put in an arena against the other children.

After Jack escaped the facility she traveled the galaxy and led a very colorful life. She always hated Cerberus, and was distrustful of Shepard when she was recruited. Miranda's loyalty to Cerberus made the two prime enemies.

After searching through the Cerberus databanks on the Normandy, Jack found the location of the facility she was raised in, and requested a trip to destroy it to get some closure. During the walk through the abandoned, run-down facility, she found out that things were not exactly the way she remembered them.

Incorrect Answers:

Aequitas was the location of the assignment N7: Abandoned Mine. This could be one of the harder assignments to complete, especially on Insanity. The miners apparently found an old Reaper device that turned them into husks. Husks could spawn continuously from many locations, making it easy to be overwhelmed. The assignment was completed when the bombs beside the Reaper device were set.

Jarrahe Station was the location of the assignment N7: Abandoned Research Station. This mission did let Shepard bring along companions, but there was no combat. Shepard had to work through a series of puzzles in order to shut down the rogue VI that killed the crew. There were still hazards on the station, and Shepard's squad mates could easily become incapacitated, but because there was no real threat or reason to have the squad functional, spending medi-gel would have been a waste.
8. Where were we when we were defending Tali against charges of treason?

Answer: The Migrant Fleet

Tali's father was a scientist and Admiral on the Admiralty Board of the Migrant Fleet. He was conducting experiments on a ship called the Aleri, in order to determine how the geth had evolved, and how to make better weapons to counter the geth. He had Tali look out for deactivated, safe geth material to send back to him. Once he had pieces, he would have his team assemble functional geth in secret. Neither Tali nor the quarian government knew about this.

Eventually the reassembled geth recreated the neural network, and gained enough intelligence to coordinate a take-over of the ship. Every quarian on board was killed, and Tali was charged with bringing active geth to the fleet.

Shepard helped Tali retake the Aleri to show that she was not a traitor to the fleet. After learning what Tali's father had done, Shepard then had the choice to change the course of quarian politics, depending on what was revealed.

Incorrect Answers:

Capek was the location of the assignment N7: Hane-Kedar Facility. The facility was the source of the bad programming that many mechs had received. It was faulty programming that turned the mechs hostile on Lazarus Station at the beginning of "Mass Effect 2". Shepard and crew had to fight through many LOKI mechs until they found a control panal from which they could shut down the assembly line.

Taitus was the location of the assignment N7: Mining The Canyon. In this mission, Shepard had to constantly load a leaky YMIR mech with power cells. The only combat was against a few varrent, and the YMIR mech ultimately lead to a large cache of resources.
9. Where were we when we were releasing a computer virus into a geth network?

Answer: Heretic Station

Legion informed Shepard that there were two geth factions. One group was the original group, determined to set their own future. The other was a splinter group that decided to follow Saren and the Reapers. This group was known as the Heretics.

Legion also knew that Heretics planned to release a virus into the geth network that would rewrite every geth in the original camp, giving them the same views as the Heretics. The virus was being housed at the Heretic Station, which was far away from any celestial bodies, hidden from those who didn't know where to look.

The Heretics were housing the virus in an advanced storage system given to them by the Reapers. Legion was on the Derelict Reaper to get data on the storage system, so it could be accessed properly.

On the Heretic station Shepard was given two options: delete the Heretics, or rewrite the virus to turn the Heretics back into normal geth.

Incorrect Answers:

The Broken Arrow was the location of the assignment N7: Imminent Ship Crash. The MSV Broken Arrow had been taken over by the geth, and was set to crash into a large human colony. Shepard had to infiltrate the ship and reactivate the engines to steer the ship away.

Franklin was the location of the assignment N7: Javelin Missiles Launched. Batarian extremists had launched a missile at the colony on Watson (Batarians didn't get along well with humans). Shepard had only five minutes to defeat the batarians and get to the kill switch. Only one abort code was available for two warheads, so Shepard had to chose between saving the residential area or the spaceport.
10. Where were we when we were talking to Aria?

Answer: Omega

The Citadel was to Citadel space what Omega Station was to the Terminus systems. And Aria controlled Omega.

Omega was a large space station built in a hollowed out asteroid. There was no set law, and areas were policed by the gangs that claimed the territory. Territory caught in a land war could be very dangerous, and depending on which gang controlled a location, living on Omega could be relatively safe and secure, or oppressive and hostile.

However, all the gangs respected Aria, the asari who had been Omega's de facto ruler for over 200 years. While the gangs fought with each other constantly, they generally did not cross Aria, and almost always paid tribute to her. There were only a few sections of the station that Aria did not have a strong influence.

Being the ruler of Omega, Aria was well informed, and could secure deals and safe passage for those she deemed worthwhile. Speaking to Aria was a great source of information for finding potential recruits and other missions on Omega.

Each of the hub worlds had a character that acted as an information source for the missions on that world. Aria could help on Omega. Illium had Liara, the Citadel had Captain Bailey, and Tuchanka had the Urdnot clan leader (Wrex or Wreav).
