Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The 3100 and 3400 engines used in GM's front wheel drive lineup have 2 common locations for leaking coolant. Where are they?

Answer: lower intake gaskets and head gaskets

The Gen II V6's used in GM N,W,U and X bodies (3100 and 3400) had no loctite on the lower intake bolts from factory and gaskets made of a lesser quality which caused clamping force to release and bolts to back out. In 2001, GM released updated gaskets and bolts to correct this problem.
2. What is the most common windshield wiper malfunction on a U or X van?

Answer: wiper crank arm losing its home position

It is common for the park tab to bend letting the crank arm park paul to bypass and park the windshield wipers high on the glass.
3. Exhaust back pressure of more than 3 PSI at 1500RPM is excessive.

Answer: True

High exhaust back pressure is most commonly caused by a plugged or melted catalytic converter which is normally the result of an overly rich or lean exhaust.
4. A "check engine" light will only come on for emission related problems.

Answer: False

All GM engine and body codes will only illuminate a "check engine" light for a variety of reasons, such as over-heating, engine misfiring, low oil pressure or level, etc.
5. A 2.4L engine used in Cavalier's and Sunfire's is an interference engine.

Answer: True

Incorrect valve timing caused by a broken timing chain or skipped tooth will cause a 2.4L engines valves to hit the pistons resulting in severe engine damage.
6. What is the most common cause of no reverse in a pre-2003 Chev or GMC 1500 series truck?

Answer: reaction sun shell failure

GM has released a more robust reaction sun shell to eliminate this concern.

Answer: 2

So far there are only 2 different length plug wires.
8. What programming updates must be done to change the tire size on most new GM vehicles?

Answer: a VCI change and an ABS change

Dealers must call GM tech line with the new tire size to see if programming is available for that specific tire size before the change can be made. This is due to the fact that some vehicles do not support a wide range of different tire sizes.

Answer: there is no spare tire

The 2006 Pontiac Solstice is equipped with an onboard air compresser/tire sealant dispenser.

60 - relative torque handling capacity, E - electronically controlled.
11. What year did GM reinstall drum brakes on the rear of their half-ton trucks?

Answer: 2005

Due to brake pad life issues and improvements in drum brake design GM switched back to drum brakes in the 2005 model year.

Answer: True
