Answer: Alessandro Volta

He was an Italian scientist, and he invented the battery in 1800.
2. When was the first lawn mower invented?

Answer: 1830

The first lawn mowers were not engine powered. Invented in 1830 by Edwin Budding of England, the mowers were turning blades on wooden sticks used to cut grass. Engine powered mowers were not invented until 1919 by an American Army colonel, who used the motor from a washing machine.
3. When were shopping carts first invented?

Answer: 1937

The shopping cart was invented by grocery store owner Sylvan Goldman of Oklahoma City. He saw how all the shoppers carried baskets to place their items in. Goldman thought that carts with wheels would be easier for shopping. The carts didn't catch on at first, so he hired people to push shopping carts around the store, but they weren't shoppers! Everyone soon noticed, and there are now two styles of carts.
4. What word came to be after a man in Ireland wrote on the walls of buildings one night in the 1700s?

His name was Daly, and he made a bet with his friends that he could introduce a new word into the English language within one day. During that night, Daly wrote on the walls of buildings in Dublin the word 'quiz'. Everyone's puzzlement the next morning sparked the idea of a short answer test. The word plays an important part in our lives!
5. In the 1700s, who would pay the postage fee for letters before the stamp was invented?

Answer: the receiver of the letter

Later in 1840, Rowland Hill invented the stamp, which was paid for by the sender, not the receiver.
6. When were bar code scanners invented?

Answer: 1970s

The scanner reads the bar code label on something at a supermarket, and translates it into a number which the computer reads.
7. Where were wigs first invented?

Answer: Egypt

As you have noticed in pictures, many Egyptians have head coverings, sometimes with beads in them. The first wigs were created to cover the head from the hot sun.

Answer: 1770

The first toothbrush was made out of a bone and small brush, by jail prisoner William Addis of England.
9. Who invented the phonograph?

Answer: Thomas Edison

John Kruesi was a mechanic for Edison, and both designed and built the phonograph.
10. During which decade was the first patent for blue denim jeans with rivets issued?

Answer: 1870s

The first blue jeans were invented by tailor Levi Strauss, who invented tougher working pants for the miners of the California Gold Rush. The initial patent for jeans with copper rivets was issued to Levi Strauss and his partner Jacob Davis in 1873.
