Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Its best known segment is referred to as "The Great White Way", and it runs through the premier theater district in America. What street is it?

Answer: Broadway

Primarily in New York City, Broadway runs for 33 miles from Battery Park at the southern tip of Manhattan, through Midtown and the Upper West Side, out of Manhattan and through The Bronx, finally ending outside city limits in Westchester County. The famous theater district is the stretch around Times Square in Midtown where it crosses Seventh Avenue and runs between 42nd Street and 53rd Street.

Here are the scores of theaters and millions of marquee lights which inspired its other name of the "Great White Way".

As that classic crooner Mr. Sinatra sang, "If I can make it there, I'll make it anywhere. It's up to you, New York New York".
2. It's not Broadway, it's Broad STREET, and it's considered the longest straight urban boulevard in the United States, as well as one of the oldest. Where is this venerable north-south arterial located?

Answer: Philadelphia

Broad Street runs straight for thirteen miles, from the Navy Yard and the stadiums deep in South Philadelphia to the edge of Montgomery County at the city's northern edge. It bisects the city between its two major rivers, the Delaware and the Schuylkill, taking a minor detour around the massive City Hall complex in center city at Market Street. Broad Street is noted for its annual ten mile run, which starts at Central High School in the north and finishes inside the Navy Yard.

In 2007 Patrick Cheruiyot set a record for the fastest ten mile time ever recorded in the USA; 45 minutes, fourteen seconds.

The speed of the straight, slight downhill, smooth surface course makes it extremely popular among elite distance runners. Broad Street also encompasses Philadelphia's main theater and classical music venues in center city and runs through Temple University in North Philadelphia.
3. It's the longest of its kind in the world and the oldest in the United States. What major Atlantic City thoroughfare sees plenty of pedestrians but no cars or trucks?

Answer: The Boardwalk

The Atlantic City Boardwalk opened for business on June 26th, 1870. Stretching for over four miles along the shoreline, this walkway of wood is emblematic of the Jersey Shore. Along its sixty foot wide expanse you can stroll leisurely, check out a huge variety of shops, arcades, restaurants and food stands, and view the magnificent Atlantic Ocean to the east across the expanse of white sand. You won't be bothered by any motorized vehicles either, unless you wish to catch a ride on a commercially regulated "Jitney," the small, slow moving public taxis which are allowed passage.

The Boardwalk also provides direct access to several major casinos, so you can conveniently lose your shirt before you hit the beach for your tan.
4. I bet you know the name of the four-mile stretch of road where fourteen of the world's twenty five largest hotels (by room count) are located. What is it?

Answer: Las Vegas Strip (Las Vegas)

The clue is in the question's opening, "I bet". Hotel Plaza Drive and Ocean Drive are both home to multiple large and prestigious hotels, but it's the Strip in Las Vegas, the gambling mecca, which hosts the most giant temporary residences for all those tourists determined to squander their hard earned dollars. Opulence, opportunity and entertainment are the words at these world famous hotels including The Mirage, The Luxor, The Bellagio, The MGM-Grand, The Paris Las Vegas, and The Venetian.

At these latter two one can see recreations of the Eiffel Tower and marble architecture which rival the European cities themselves. Las Vegas has worked hard to shed its old image of organized crime influence and corruption, and has in fact become a family destination as well as a place for the rich and famous (and everyone else) to get wild. If you really want to get America, take a chance and visit Vegas for at least a day. You might be appalled, but you will understand.
5. Three of these streets are known for luxury shops and high-end clothing boutiques. Which one is known for fish?

Answer: Pike Place, Seattle

The renowned Pike Place Market sits along the waterfront in downtown Seattle, Washington. Pike Place is the street running through the center of the market district. The large body of water providing all this life and commerce to the area is the Puget Sound, which opens out into the Pacific Ocean off the Washington coast.

The market houses an amazing array of food stands, restaurants and grocery stores offering every imaginable seafood option, as well as collectibles shops, antique dealers, arcades and other tourist entertainments. Yes, there are clothing stores, but you have a better chance of scoring a $20 "I had a whale of a time in Seattle" t-shirt, than the $4,000 dress you might purchase on the other streets. Several ferries leave throughout the day on prompt schedule for nearby islands in the Sound, and it is even possible to enjoy your fish and chips on a longer two to three hour ferry ride from Seattle to Victoria, British Columbia, in Canada.
6. What US city boasts every kind of shopping along the Magnificent Mile, and scenery along Lake Shore Drive?

Answer: Chicago, Illinois

Chicago's Michigan Avenue, also known as 'The magnificent Mile', is home to more than 460 retail shops, from Target and Sears to Neiman Marcus, Nordstroms, Gucci, and everything in between. It even made the New York Post's list of ten top shopping streets in the world (behind Fifth Avenue, of course)! Lakeshore Drive is the busy but scenic expressway which runs for miles both north and south of center city.

It parallels Lake Michigan to Chicago's east, and when the wind whips up the waves, it feels like you are right next to the ocean.

The road is designated as US Highway 41.
7. What US city, which hosted the first automobile and motor cycle races, still affords you the opportunity to drive along parts of its twenty three mile hard-packed sand beach?

Answer: Daytona Beach, Florida

Located 51 miles northeast of Orlando on Florida's Fun Coast, Daytona Beach is a big destination for winter vacationers from northern states and specifically students on spring break. One of the favorite activities is cruising the super wide, hard and smooth quartz sand beach, which has traffic lanes and signs just like any other road.

This is an old tradition. Since 1902, the old Road Course held races, and for many years in the first half of the century, this was the place daredevils came to set land speed records.

These days, however, professional racing is all done at inland tracks and beach speed is limited to ten miles per hour. Ten dollars gets you all day beach access and parking. The signature event in the town is the world famous Daytona 500, which kicks off NASCAR's season each February. Since its 1959 inaugural at the speedway, it has become the most prestigious race of the season and it carries the largest purse by a large margin. NASCAR's headquarters is also in the city.
8. What street becomes a thirteen block hot spot of Mardi Gras partying, jazz music, and French Creole cuisine? (think alcohol)

Answer: Bourbon Street

"The Big Easy" (New Orleans) ramps up its usual activity every February for the annual Mardi Gras celebration. At the heart of the action is Bourbon Street, which comes alive with traditionally costumed local paraders, revellers, and tourists from the world over.

The jazz, R&B, and rock music plays all night in the clubs and on the street, and the beer flows, often literally, IN the street.
9. What is the best-known feature of Lombard Street in San Francisco?

Answer: Steepness

The "City by the Bay" (locals never call it "Frisco") is hip, cool and hilly. Probably its most famous street is Lombard Street. It has a short, steep one block stretch with eight hairpin turns and an elevation change of 27 degrees. It's paved with bricks and winds through a beautiful bed of flowers, with houses on either side. From the bottom of the switchbacks it continues straight a few miles to Telegraph Hill, then picks up again heading south from Winthrop Street, eventually ending at The Embarcadero waterfront area.

The yellow and black caution sign at the top of the crooked section has the expected wavy arrow, and also a warning "5" to indicate suggested miles per hour. Luckily, it is a one way street(downhill).
10. As your shopping spree continues, you are now on a road which might make you think you are in a western movie. But no, you're in La La Land, about to drop several grand on a pair of shoes or a handbag. Where are you?

Answer: Rodeo Drive

La La Land is a nickname, now recognized by the Oxford English Dictionary, for another quintessentially American city, namely Los Angeles. Rodeo Drive is where Richard Gere took Julia Roberts shopping in "Pretty Woman". It stands for stylish, over-the-top, flaunt-it-if-ya-got-it excess.

In December of 2015, French luxury designer Chanel paid $152 million for an 11,500 foot square retail space on the drive, a record price which came to over $13,000 per square foot. The company considered it a bargain, considering the desire of the 'beautiful people' to look fabulous, the prices the rich and famous will shell out, and the sky high leasing fees they were already paying. Rodeo Drive is second only to Fifth Avenue in New York among the most expensive retail streets in the country.
