Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This lighthouse is the state's oldest and is the oldest original lighthouse in the United States that is still standing.

Answer: Sandy Hook Lighthouse

The lighthouse was built in 1764 and was originally named New York Lighthouse, due to the role it played protecting ships entering New York Harbor and since New York was mainly responsible for its funding.
2. This is one of the two lighthouses in New Jersey with a skeletal support structure and is located in Pennsville.

Answer: Finn's Point Rear Range Light

The tower is 115 feet tall and the lighthouse is situated in Supawna Meadows National Wildlife Refuge.
3. Located in North Wildwood, this lighthouse was built in the Swiss Gothic style.

Answer: Hereford Inlet Lighthouse

Yes, Swiss Gothic is a real style (you can look it up on the NJLHS website). Not surprisingly, it is the only one of its kind on the East coast.
4. This lighthouse is the most southerly of New Jersey's lighthouses.

Answer: Cape May Lighthouse

The lighthouse is just one of many sights to see in Cape May. The Victorian bed and breakfasts are beautiful to behold, but you must see the concrete ship before she finally slips beneath the waves.
5. The structure that stands today is a replica of the original that was claimed by the sea in 1927.

Answer: Tucker's Island Lighthouse

Pictures were taken as the lighthouse collapsed into the surf. You can view these at http://www.lehsd.k12.nj.us/seaport/kennedy/1927.htm.

The replica lighthouse serves as a museum in Tuckerton Seaport. Many other seaside structures are showcased here as well, including a working shipyard! It's well worth the visit!
6. This lighthouse boasts two towers, each with its own fresnel lens.

Answer: Navesink Lighthouse

One of the best views of New York harbor (as well as Sandy Hook Lighthouse) can be seen from the lights.

One of this lighthouse's claims to fame is that Marconi sent a message from off-shore to a radio tower located on the lighthouse grounds on September 30, 1899. This was thought to be the first demonstration of radio's practical usage.
7. The other lighthouse with a skeletal structure, this lighthouse stands in the middle of a playing field in Paulsboro.

Answer: Tinicum Rear Range Light

This lighthouse is still operational and projects a red beam of light.

It also commands a great view of Philadelphia's skyline.
8. This lighthouse lies within the borders of Atlantic City and commands a great view of all the casinos.

Answer: Absecon Lighthouse

This lighthouse is now open to the public and is part of a park owned by Atlantic City.
9. Built on the Maurice River in Heislerville, this lighthouse was first called the Maurice River Lighthouse.

Answer: East Point Lighthouse

In 1971, the Maurice River Historical Society decided that the lighthouse needed to be renovated, but the structure was gutted by a fire before work could begin.

At the time this quiz was written, construction continues on the lower rooms in the structure.
10. My favorite lighthouse, this lighthouse is the tallest in the state and the third tallest in the country.

Answer: Barnegat Lighthouse

"Old Barney"'s distinctive red above white markings make it one of the most beautiful lighthouses in New Jersey.

The original lighthouse on Barnegat Inlet was not even half as tall. It's foundation lies beneath the waters just off the jetty.

Sadly, I did not have enough questions to mention Sea Girt Lighthouse. It is truly a beautiful structure in a beautiful (and quiet) seaside town.
