Answer: True

In 1986, Shelby defeated senator Republican incumbent Jeremiah Denton in a close election. He switched parties in 1994 after Republicans won the Senate. Shelby had been an opponent of many of President Clinton's policies, especially on taxes, which was the impetus for his switch.

Sessions was first elected to the Senate in 1996 after Democrat Howell Heflin retired. He was re-elected by increasingly wider margins in 2002 and 2008.
3. Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska was the second person to win a Senate seat via a write-in campaign (Strom Thurmond was the first). Her write-in campaign came about when she lost the 2010 Republican primary election to whom?

Answer: Joe Miller

Lisa Murkowski was seen as a moderate Republican who often broke ranks with her party, mostly by supporting various nominees appointed by President Obama. This caused her to face a more conservative challenge from magistrate judge Joe Miller in the primary.

Answer: Anchorage

Begich had to resign the post after winning election to the Senate. His defeat over Ted Stevens was helped by Stevens' ethics troubles and felony convictions. Even if Stevens had been reelected, there were motions on both sides of the aisle to have him expelled. Begich's father is Nick Begich, a former U.S. Congressman who disappeared in a plane crash in 1972.
5. Even before becoming a politician, Republican Sen. John McCain gained notoriety for being a prisoner of war during what conflict?
