Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The B-52 has been in service for over 60 years. Which variant of it was the first to have turbofan engines?

Answer: B-52H

The B-52H strategic bomber has TF-33-P-3 turbofans, which give it much better range and fuel efficiency. It is expected to remain in service into the 2050s.
2. Which USAF stealth bomber has a distinctive flying wing profile?

Answer: B-2

The B-2 was developed from the Senior CJ project and was very costly, at around $1 Billion each. Only 21 were produced, one of which (The Spirit of Kansas) crashed in 2008.
3. Which USAF bomber has an unusual VG (variable geometry) wing?

Answer: B-1B

The B-1B was very controversial due to its cost. The Carter administration cancelled the project, although limited flying of the prototypes continued. The Reagan administration undid Carter's cancellation and ordered 100, putting them all into SAC service.
4. On a B-1B there are small canards at the front. What are they for?

Answer: When flying low it reduces turbulence

If the B-1B did not have the canards it would have half the fatigue life. However, advances in SAM (surface to air missiles) technology forced a tactical switch to more low level operations.
5. When was the B-2's combat debut?

Answer: 1999

The B-2's combat debut was in 1999 during the Kosovo War. It also has nuclear capability but hopefully will never have to use it.
6. What is the B-52's combat radius, without in-flight re-fueling?

Answer: 4,480 miles

The B-52 would usually be refueled by KC-135s on the way and back from a mission. The early B-52 versions needed refueling many times if they were to reach Russia.
7. Is the B-1B a high level supersonic bomber?

Answer: False

The B-1B is a low-level penetration bomber. Early in its development, it was envisaged that it would be similar to the TU-22M Soviet bomber, but in the end it was developed into a low-level aircraft.
8. An aircraft's RCS (radar cross section) is an indication of how large an object appears on radar. How big is the RCS of the B-2?

Answer: 0.1m2

As a stealth bomber, the RCS of the B-2 is extremely small. For comparison, that of the B-52 bomber is 100m2, making it much more visible to enemy radar.
9. When was the first flight of a B-1B?

Answer: 1983

The B-1B was the version ordered into service. 100 were built, and many remained in service well into the twenty-first century.
10. Has the B-52 ever officially shot down an enemy aircraft?

Answer: Yes

In the Vietnam war, two kills were credited to tail gunners shooting down Soviet MIG-21 "Fishbeds".
