I would like to claim Contract #242 - 4 points: Create a symmetrical crossword about puppets. (by Leith90) My "Puppet Parade" crossword can be found at: https://www.funtrivia.com/crossword/play.cfm?gid=8629 New Challenge Xs and Zs: Construct a Small (4), Medium (8) or Large (12) symmetric crossword with at least the specified number of three-letter words in its grid. EVERY three-letter word MUST contain an X, Z or both letters in the answer. No Roman numerals, clothing sizes, IATA codes or two letter words, please. Lexico.com has a helpful list at https://www.lexico.com/explore/three-letter-words-containing-x-or-z although they do not seem to know about slate masons' tools (ZAX), nor does the list have proper nouns like King ZOG. Unfortunately, I think I have first claim on this contract Contract #242 - 4 points: Create a symmetrical crossword about puppets. (by Leith90) for my crossword puzzle "Hello, Muppets!" https://www.funtrivia.com/crossword/play.cfm?gid=8628 since my crossword puzzle went online first. For the next contract, I would like to propose: Write a quiz of any format, size, and category where all of the answer choices are 10 letters long. Reply #603. Sep 17 21, 6:03 AM |

I always thought it was whoever claimed the contract first, isn't it? Can that be clarified, please? Reply #604. Sep 17 21, 7:30 AM |

I'd like to claim Contract #210 - 36 points: Write a quiz about short story which you did not begin reading before August 08, 2021. Re reply 604: as per the header post, "Wait for the quiz to go online, then report it here to claim the contract." First one back here to call it gets it. Reply #606. Sep 17 21, 12:07 PM |

Regarding my proposed challenge: "Xs and Zs: Construct a Small (4), Medium (8) or Large (12) symmetric crossword with at least the specified number of three-letter words in its grid. EVERY three-letter word MUST contain an X, Z or both letters in the answer. No Roman numerals, clothing sizes, IATA codes or two letter words, please." I received this message: "Clarification for your next challenge- if I have six three-letter words in a small grid, does each have to have an X,Y or Z? Or just the four that you specified?" EVERY three-letter word has to have X, Z or both. Y does not form part of this challenge. Reply #607. Sep 17 21, 3:17 PM |

I wish to claim Contract #243 - 5 points: Construct a symmetrical crossword about mystery/crime literature. No two-letter words, no more than one IATA code (if you must) and at least 50% of the answers must have more than three letters. The puzzle must be submitted to Literature. (by Windrush) My "Whodunit?" crossword can be found at: https://www.funtrivia.com/crossword/play.cfm?gid=8633 New Challenge: "Q"s without "U"s: Construct a symmetric crossword whose grid does NOT contain the letter U, but which has at least six occurrences of the letter Q. I'd like to claim contract Contract #244: Construct a pair of symmetric crosswords which both use the same grid. The first needs to be a left-handed puzzle, whose answers only use letters on the left of the QWERTY keyboard (Q, W, E, R, T, A, S, D, F, G, Z, X, C, V and B.) The second must be a right-handed puzzle using only the right-side letters (Y, U, I, O, P, H, J, K, L, N and M.) No two-letter words or IATA codes, please. (by Psnz) https://www.funtrivia.com/crossword/play.cfm?gid=8638 https://www.funtrivia.com/crossword/play.cfm?gid=8642 New contract: Compile a symmetrical crossword where all clues and answers are opposites. Eg: hot/cold or polite/rude. Opposite number like King/Queen are also allowed. Reply #609. Sep 18 21, 11:07 PM |

Do I understand this contract correctly? Would I use a clue like "not polite" to get the answer of "rude"? Or could an answer like "impolite" also be used for "rude"? "Impolite" would be a synonym, not an antonym, but the root word "polite" would be an antonym. Reply #610. Sep 18 21, 11:12 PM |

The clue and the answer must be antonyms. So for an answer of rude, the clue would be polite, as impolite or not polite are synonyms. I have a CW online using this format if you want to have a look: https://www.funtrivia.com/crossword/play.cfm?gid=8335 Reply #611. Sep 19 21, 5:50 AM |

To replace Contract no. 246, please construct a symmetrical, medium crossword where more than 60% of the words are EITHER geographical locations but the corresponding clues are components of song titles or lyrics within well-known songs, OR, the words are geographical locations but the clues are titles of novels eg Julie Covington - "Don't Cry for Me ____" [ARGENTINA] E.M. Forster "A Passage to ____" [INDIA] Reply #613. Sep 22 21, 2:56 AM |

With reference to Reply #613... Thank you, 1nn1! For me, this is proving an intriguing challenge. The easy part has been creating a puzzle with 34 answers, 24 of which are country names (70.6%). I'm about halfway through writing the clues. There just aren't well-known (in my experience anyway) song or book titles for some nations. I've ended up with things like: Sportfreunde Stiller: "Pogo in ____" (2006) [TOGO]; or Dead Kennedys: "Holiday in ____" (1980) [CAMBODIA]. And trust me, they're two of the better ones. I'm not happy with the way the puzzle is turning out, so I've decided to scrap my current set of clues and change focus, slightly. In its current form, the CW is becoming just a Google exercise and I really want to avoid that. So, what I'm going to do instead is use the countries' national anthems for my clues. I don't know if this will meet contractual requirements, since some are hardly well known outside their nations. If not, so be it, but I think the puzzle will be a bit more playable. Reply #614. With reference to Reply #613 Thanks for the note psnz. This crossword is a bit of a challenge but it is do-able using the original criteria You might have noticed a gap between me claiming the previous contract and posting the replacement contract - That was because I thought I had better prove that the challenge could be accomplished first (It is a requirement of the challenge that if it is deemed too difficult, the challenge author must prove it can be done). One thing I can comment on is that in all examples quoted so far, only countries have been quoted. I found it much easier because I used a lot of cities and quite a few geographical terms. What I suggest do you it write down every song that you can think of containing a place name, then write a list of geographical terms, then link these back to songs (Eg "RIVER Deep, MOUNTAIN High"; "Baker STREET". Then arrange all your candidates in order of number of letters, find a suitable grid then jiggle your possible words into the grid and complete. If you are a fair way along your National Anthem route I would continue and submit this as a separate CW - It looks like it is something different and should be pursued. Reply #615. I appear to have misplaced the contract number, but I wish to claim "Q"s without "U"s: Construct a symmetric crossword whose grid does NOT contain the letter U, but which has at least six occurrences of the letter Q. As there appear to be 10 current contracts, and the above does not appear on the list, perhaps I shouldn't propose a new contract? Reply #617. Sep 23 21, 11:39 PM |

I've been advised to go ahead with a new contract. This is about a place with a rich history dating from neolithic times, and also some amazing geographic and architectural features. Construct a symmetrical crossword (any size) in either the History or the Geography category on the subject of the Islands of Malta. No two-letter words or IATA codes, please. Reply #618.
