1. This land mammal is a pack hunter and largest member of the dog family. Its Latin name is Canis lupus. Can you name it?

Answer: Wolf

Interesting Information:
Wolves are amazing beautiful creatures. There are over 30 different sub-species found in Eurasia and North America. They are social animals, travelling in packs, hunting together and raising their young in families. Wolves are mainly carnivores, eating large hoofed animals such as deer. Humans are afraid of wolves but really don't have a need to be as wolf attacks are rare and mostly attributed to rabid wolves. In fact, it's wolves who should be afraid of humans such as hunters and ranchers. Difficulty: Very Easy.

3. The European souslik has an unusual name, but would probably look rather ordinary to most people. These common mammals of Asia and Europe have been given this name, but you would just call it what?

Answer: Squirrel

Interesting Information:
They look like and are common ground squirrels, but have one unusual feature that distinguishes them from your everyday squirrel: their food includes large quantities of meat, generally small birds, voles, moles and other small rodents. The squirrels themselves are rodents.

These squirrels are found through eastern Europe to Asia Minor. The length of the souslik is around eight inches and it weighs in at about eleven ounces. This squirrel is diurnal and lives in colonies of individual burrows or grassy slopes. They come out during to day to feed on seeds, plants, roots and flightless small invertebrates. The eggs of ground nesting birds are also on the menu. Sentinels are posted to whistle at any signs of danger.

This squirrel has a very specific habitat need for it to build its tunnel systems. It requires short turf in order to dig properly, the best terrain being steppes and pastureland. Sporting fields, lawns and parks are also good, but are too often filled with humans.

In winter, these squirrels hibernate, each in his own chamber of dried vegetation in the burrow. In spring, mating takes place and the litter consists of about five to eight young. After six weeks or so of nursing, the offspring are off on their own.

The category of this 'Spermophilus citellus' - (Linnaueus, 1766) is labeled 'Vulnerable", as its habitat is decreasing. Difficulty: Hard.

4. Mohair and cashmere fibers are highly prized in garment making. From the coat of which ungulate do they come?

Answer: Goat

Interesting Information:
All four of these animals produce wool or fibers, but it is the goat, and specifically the angora goat (mohair) and Kashmir goat (cashmere) that produce these very fine, strong fibers. Angora goats originated from the Ankara region of Turkey, while cashmere is an old spelling variant of Kashmir, the large northwestern region of the Indian subcontinent. Angora goats are shorn twice a year and can yield up to ten pounds of mohair. Cashmere (wool) is collected during the spring moulting period as the goats shed their winter coats. Pashmina goats are a variety of cashmere goats found in several countries in the Himalayas where the wool is made into world famous shawls. An extra note for trivia buffs: Angora wool does not come from goats, but rather from angora rabbits! Difficulty: Hard.

24. Meerkats are upright members of what family, known for attacking snakes?

Answer: Mongoose

Interesting Information:
Meerkats love the desert life they live, able to kill (and eat!) venomous snakes - even if they are bitten, a glycoprotein in their system binds to proteins in the snake venom and renders it inactive. Similarly, they can withstand scorpion toxins, with scientists estimating that it would need six time as much venom as would kill a rabbit to harm a meerkat.

More than that, they have 'sunglasses' in the form of distinctive dark patches around their eyes that assist with reducing sun glare. That's helpful when they are scanning the skies to ensure that no large birds, looking for tasty meerkat for dinner, are overhead. They are as winsome as they appear on the television ads; they settle arguments with eating contests; cuddle up together to sleep; and make a paste of secretions from under their tails and rub it on their surroundings to mark their territory. Well, okay, that last one is not so cute.
