Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following marine animals is NOT a mammal?

Answer: Great white shark

Mammals are warm-blooded vertebrates that breathe air. Apart from a couple of exceptions, they give birth to live young which are fed milk. Most land mammals have fur or hair to keep them warm.

Great white sharks are a type of fish. They are cold-blooded and use gills to process oxygen from the water. Unlike marine mammals, they do not need to surface to breathe air.
2. Closely related to humans, this mammal suffers from many human diseases, including malaria. What is this great ape?

Answer: Chimpanzee

Chimpanzees are primates native to Africa where they live in large communities. The young are carried by their mothers and are weaned at about three years old. They are very intelligent and known to use tools when hunting and foraging for food. Sadly, chimps are classified as endangered due to habitat destruction and poaching.
3. Mammals are divided into subgroups based on the way they give birth. Placentals and monotremes are the first two groups. What is the third?

Answer: Marsupials

Marsupials include kangaroos, koalas, opossums, and wombats. These unique animals are known for their pouches where the young develop.

Did you know a newborn kangaroo is only the size of a lima bean when it is born? It then climbs up through its mother's fur and into the pouch. It continues to develop here for about 190 days before emerging. Baby kangaroos are called joeys.

Monotremes are comprised of platypuses and echidnas, the egg-laying mammals.

Most mammals are placentals. These animals develop completely before a live birth.
4. A polar bear can sprint at speeds of up to which of these for short bursts? It quickly overheats and then must jump into the sea to cool off.

Answer: 40 km/h (about 25 mph)

Polar bears are the largest species of bear with males reaching up to 1,700 pounds. They are native to the Arctic and are considered vulnerable because of a decline in sea ice. They primarily hunt seals but also eat walruses, narwals, reindeer, and more.

Although they can run fast, they usually walk at about 5.5 km/h (3.4 mph). They are also great swimmers. They swim at about 6 km/h (3.7 mph) and can keep going for over three days at a time.
5. The adult male of this mammal is known as a boomer, and the female is called a blue flyer. What is this mammal?

Answer: Red kangaroo

Red kangaroos are the largest species of kangaroo. Males can have a body length of five feet plus up to four more feet for their tails alone. Interestingly, it is only the males that have reddish fur. Females are blue-grey. Found throughout Australia, red kangaroos can hop at up to 56 km/h (35 mph) and leap six feet into the air!
6. Which feline lives in temperatures sometimes as low as -45 degrees Celsius in Russia, is mostly night-active, lives for an average of 15 years, and occupies a very large territory?

Answer: Siberian tiger

The largest cat species, the Siberian tiger is native to Eastern Russia and Northeast China. This beautifully striped feline is classified as endangered by the IUCN because of habitat loss and poaching. Males can weigh up to 225 kg (about 496 pounds) and be 3 meters (10 feet) long from nose to tail.
7. Which food source is NOT included in the native giant panda's diet?

Answer: Possum

Giant pandas retain the digestive system of a carnivore though their diet is made up primarily of bamboo. They will eat small mammals and fish if they can catch them, along with flowers, berries, and eggs to complement their bamboo diet. Possums don't form part of the panda's diet though as they live in Australia, whereas giant pandas are endemic to China.
8. Which of these is one of the common dolphin's most feared enemies and is itself a species of dolphin?

Answer: Killer whale/orca

While commonly called killer whales, orcas are the largest species of dolphin. These intelligent, apex predators can be found in all oceans but are more prominent in colder regions. Known as "wolves of the sea," they hunt dolphins, whales, squids, fish, seals, sharks, and more. They are known for their dramatic black-and-white coloring.
9. Although introduced to other parts of the world, the grey squirrel is a native of where?

Answer: North America

The Eastern gray squirrel, or grey squirrel, is native to North America and is usually considered invasive elsewhere. Although adorable, they are threats to ecosystems where they are not welcome and displace native red squirrels.

Known for their characteristic fluffy tails, grey squirrels forage for seeds, nuts, tree bark, flowers, and other plants. They are fantastic tree climbers.
10. Which marsupial rarely drinks but gets all the liquid it needs from the special leaves it eats?

Answer: Koala

A koala's diet consists mainly of eucalyptus leaves. This food does not offer much energy and koalas sleep for up to twenty hours a day. The name "koala" comes from the Dharug language and means "no water."

Koalas are native to Eastern Australia in the regions of Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia. They are solitary animals and have little interaction with each other.
