In the state of North Carolina, there is a battle on which school is closer to God. UNC says God is a tar heel due to the sky being Carolina blue. Wake Forest says God is a Deacon, because the Bible is black and gold. Wake Forest's mascot was originated soon after the 1923 game against Trinity College (now Duke University) when a local reporter said the team fought like demon deacons (Deacons are lay leaders in the Baptist Church).

The school, built in a classical Georgian plantation style, was the first university to be entirely planned and built before the students moved to Winston-Salem.
