A Colourful Animal Mixture Trivia Quiz
The animals in this quiz all have a colour as part of their common name. Match the colours marked by a number on the labelled picture to the correct animal in the list. Some might fit in more than one place, but there is only one fully correct solution.
Match the correct number on each colour to the animal which has a name including that colour. There is no significance to whether the number is black or white - this is just for clarity against the background.

This question and clue refer to the black sawn, not the more common white coloured ones - they have various names such as mute swan or whooper swan and are not known just as white swans. Black swans, Cygnus atratus, are native to Australia, found in the south east and south west regions.. They are particularly associated with Perth, in Western Australia, and its Swan River.
Black swans have been successfully introduced to other parts of the world including the UK, Japan and China.
2. Whale
Your first thought for this question may well have been the colour blue, but that was reserved for the blue jay, further on in the quiz. The correct choice for white is the beluga, also known as the white whale, due to its colouring. Their scientific name is Delphinapterus leucas, and they live in the Arctic regions, along with narwhals and bowhead whales.
Belugas are known as the canaries of the sea due to the wide range of sounds they make when communicating with each other.
3. Wolf
Canis lupus is the name of the grey wolf, an inhabitant of northern regions of America and Europe and many parts of Asia. It is the largest of the canids and has many sub-species, nearly forty in total. Wolves are the ancestors of our family dogs, having been domesticated early on.
Wolves form packs and are more interactive than other animals, hunting together and working together to care for their pups. Their biggest enemy is man, especially farmers who raise livestock.
4. River dolphin
The pink colour refers to the pink river dolphin, found mainly in the Amazon river so also known as the Amazon river dolphin. Other names include the boto and bufeo and the scientific name is Inia geoffrensis. It can be found in several countries along the Amazon, including Bolivia and Venezuela. Subspecies exist in the Madeira river and the Orinoco, also in South America.
Young dolphins have grey skin, but older animals, especially males, turn pink. The change is caused by abrasions to the skin, often from fights with other dolphins, which is why males are pinker then females.
5. Wagtail
The yellow wagtail has two distinct species, the western (Motacilla flava) and the eastern (Motacilla tschutschensis). They are similar in appearance but have genetic differences. The western yellow wagtail is found in Europe, including the UK and Asia, migrating south to Africa to overwinter. The eastern species is found in the far east of Russia, with some in the western parts of Alaska. These migrate as far south as Australia for the winter.
Males have olive green wings and yellow breast feathers while females are brown in colour. They are easily identified by the tail movements which give them their common name.
6. Panda
Ailurus fulgens has the common name of red panda or lesser panda. It has little in common with the giant panda other than living in China and also eating bamboo, but not exclusively. Red pandas are also seen in the Himalayas. The common name comes from its reddish-brown fur.
Red pandas live in wooded areas and co-exist with the giant panda in parts of China. They are also found in Nepal and India. Genetically, they are related to raccoons and weasels.
7. Anaconda
The green anaconda is one of the biggest snakes of the world. It is among the longest and is known to be the heaviest of all snake varieties. It lives in or near water, and is not venomous. That doesn't mean you're safe around one, though, as it is a type of boa, killing prey by constriction.
Anacondas are found in Trinidad, in the Caribbean, and in South America in countries which lie to the east of the Andes and the more northern parts of the continent. Other names include the emerald anaconda, common water boa and common anaconda. The scientific name is Eunectes murinus.
8. Jay
The blue jay is a member of the crow family, Corvidae, and is known scientifically as Cyanocitta cristata. It is native to the eastern areas of the USA and can be seen in east and central regions of the country and into Canada.
The plumage is a pale to mid blue and both males and females look the same, although male birds are slightly larger. They have a range of sounds and can mimic human speech and even the sounds of other birds.
9. Bunting
This darker shade of blue represents indigo and refers to the indigo bunting, a type of bird with the name Passerina cyanea. Found in the Americas, its range is from the southern regions of Canada to northern Florida during the summer. It migrates further south from Florida into Central America and northern countries of South America in the winter months.
Only the male has blue feathers, and only during the summer. It turns brown over winter while the female has brown plumage all year.
10. Martin
The purple martin is a member of the swallow family and has the scientific name of Progne subis. The name is misleading, as it isn't actually purple in colour - its feathers are more of a blue and black shade which can appear purple in some lights. The feathers are iridescent, so the birds look more blue or even green.
The purple martin is native to North America, with nesting sites based on cavities such as old woodpecker holes in trees. Humans often put up special nesting boxes for them and the birds will return regularly to these. They are migratory, spending the colder months in South American countries.
