Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. It sounds like THE CHEMICAL SYMBOL FOR POTASSIUM + IX = doglike.

Answer: Canine

The chemical symbol for potassium = K
IX in Roman numerals is NINE.
Add these together and they sound out CANINE.

Canines typically have bushy tails, erect ears and long muzzles, so the term can encompass dogs, wolves, jackals and foxes.
2. It sounds like TO SHED + ALLEVIATE will make this small, cute dog breed.

Answer: Maltese

A synonym for SHED is MOULT (which sounds like MALT)
To alleviate is to EASE.
Pop them together and it sounds out MALTESE.

The Maltese is a super-cute dwarf canine (or toy dog) usually associated with Malta.
3. A GIRL OR YOUNG WOMAN + THAT IS = this famous movie dog.

Answer: Lassie

A young girl or woman is a LASS
"That is" = I.e.
Add them together and you get LASSIE.

Lassie is a Rough Collie. The first Lassie movie "Lassie Come Home" came out in 1943 and featured a 12 year-old Elizabeth Taylor.
4. SHY + ADORE - 'D' = this North American carnivore.

Answer: Coyote

A synonym for Shy is COY.
A synonym for Adore is DOTE.
Now, minus the D from DOTE, and you are left with OTE.
Add the COY and OTE and you have COYOTE.

The coyote is a species native to North America. They are often referred to as prairie wolves and can run at a top speed of 40MPH.
5. It sounds like TO REDUCE TO SMALL SHREDS + A NATIVE OF COPENHAGEN = the breed of dog 'Scooby Doo' was based on.

Answer: Great Dane

So, to reduce to shreds = GRATE.
A native of Copenhagen is a DANE.
Sounding them out makes GREAT DANE.

'Scooby Doo' was released in 1969.

Fun fact: Scooby Doo was short for Scoobert Doo... a name which came from lyrics that were 'scatted' at the end of Frank Sinatra's 'Strangers in the Night'.

Source: Head of CBS, Fred Silverman, discussing the creation of Scooby Doo for the website stackexchange.
6. Sounds like THE MIDDLE OF AN APPLE + THE LOOSE WHITE JACKET WORN IN JUDO = this very famous breed of dog.

Answer: Corgi

The middle of an apple = CORE
A loose white jacket worn in judo = GI
Add them together and they sound out CORGI.

Queen Elizabeth II has always favoured Corgis. She had one in her household from age 7. On her 18th birthday, she was gifted her own Corgi, Susan. Since then, she has bred 14 generations of Corgis, all descendants of Susan.
7. It sounds like OCCUPYING THE THRONE + FELINES + AMPERSAND + CANINES = a phrase meaning very heavy deluge.

Answer: Raining cats and dogs

Occupying the throne = REIGNING
Felines = CATS
Ampersand = AND
Canines = DOGS
This then sounds like RAINING CATS AND DOGS.

"Raining cats and dogs" is a phrase that has been used since 1651. There are many schools of thought as to how the phrase originated, however the two most likely scenarios are thought to be:
a) it originated in the UK (when thatched roofs were the norm, and household pets would sleep in the rafters, and would drop down in heavy rainfall) or,
b) it comes from the obsolete word Catadupe, meaning waterfall.
8. Sounds like A TEMPORARY STOP IN ACTION OR SPEECH = this part of a dog's anatomy.

Answer: Paws

Temporary stop in action or speech = PAUSE (which sounds like PAWS).

Paws relate to a four-legged animal's feet, providing they have claws. Thus rabbits, bears, cats and dogs all have paws.
9. It sounds like a BUZZING INSECT and a WEB-FOOTED BIRD joined together to get this little hound.

Answer: Beagle

A buzzing insect = BEE
A web-footed bird = GULL
Put them together and they sound out BEAGLE.

Beagles are scent-hounds. They are small, compact and hardy and make very good family pets. Beagles are often used at airports to sniff out contraband.
10. "Research shows a pillow helps dogs to sleep. The softer the pillow, the better and longer a dog will sleep". Can you find the term for a puppy in this sentence?

Answer: Whelp

A pillo(W HELP)s dogs to sleep.

Whelps are the young of carnivorous mammals. Whelped means 'to bring forth young ones'.
