Rowing has been contested at every Olympics since 1900. It was programmed for the 1896 Games but this event was cancelled due to weather conditions. Rowing was only open to men up to the 1976 Montreal Summer Olympics, which introduced events for women.

Answer: Volleyball

Since 1964 volleyball has been an Olympic event, but only as an indoor sport. It was at the 1996 Games that beach volleyball (played outdoors) was also scheduled.

Volleyball was included before 1964 at the 1924 Paris Games but only as a demonstration sport. Beach volleyball was also a demonstration sport, at the 1992 Games.

Fencing has been included in all the Summer Olympic Games since 1896. Women's foil made its first appearance in the 1924 Games.

Taekwondo is a recent edition to the Games programme. It was a demonstration sport in 1988 and 1992 but at the 2000 Sydney Games it became an official event.

Judo became an Olympic event for men for the first time at the 1964 Tokyo Games. It was not included at the 1968 Games, but has been scheduled at every Olympics since. It was not until 1988 that women were allowed to participate in this event, but only in demonstrating - but four years later in 1992 it became a medal event for women.

Answer: Handball

Handball (aka team, field European or Olympic handball) was first played at the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games at the request of Adolf Hitler under the name of field handball. At these games six teams played. It was not listed as an event again until 1972 at Munich, but was called team handball. Team handball for women was added to the 1976 Olympic programme.

Answer: Polo

The 1900, 1908, 1920, 1924 and 1936 Olympics included polo as a medal event.

Polo is regarded as the oldest mounted team sport in the world.

Answer: Archery

Archery's Olympic debut was in 1900 in Paris. It was an event at the 1904, 1908 and 1920 Games but was not featured again until the 1972 Games at Munich. Only individual events were held from 1972 until 1988 when team competitions were introduced.

Another name for an archer is toxophilite.

Answer: Roque

Roque is the American variant of croquet. It has been only listed once as a medal event and that was at the 1904 St Louis Olympics. At these Games, America was the only nation to field competitors in this sport.

Answer: Lacrosse

Lacrosse was a medal event at the 1904 and 1908 Olympics. At both these Olympics only two nations competed, these were USA and Canada. In the 1904 Summer Olympics, one of Canada's teams consisted totally of Mohawk Indians and the USA fielded a local team from St Louis. In the 1928, 1932 and 1948 Olympics, lacrosse was a demonstration sport.

Answer: Croquet

Croquet was a medal event at the 1900 Olympic Games and it has not been offered at any other games since. Only France (9 competitors) and Belgium (1 competitor) entered. France won all the medals for this sport.

Answer: Equestrian

The 1900 Paris Olympic Games was when Equestrianism made its debut but was not scheduled as a medal event again until 1912. Since 1912 it has been included at all Games. Up to 1952 only male cavalry officers were allowed to enter for any of the disciplines (dressage, three-day event and stadium jumping).

After 1952 it became open for men and women - civilian and military. It is one of the few events in which men and women compete against each other.

Golf has only been incorporated into the Olympic Games medal events twice, this was at the 1900 and 1904 Games.

Answer: Badminton

Badminton was a demonstration event at the 1972 and 1988 Games but became an official medal sport at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. At these games 36 countries entered contestants and of the 16 medals offered, Asian nations won 15. The only non-Asian country to win was Denmark who obtained a bronze medal in the men's singles.

Answer: Wrestling

Wrestling has been included in every modern Olympic Games but one, which was the 1900 Summer Olympics. In 1904, freestyle wrestling and weight classes were introduced.
