Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Make a move down to Alabama.

Answer: Mobile mobile

Something that moves is mobile ("MOH-bile" or "MOH-bill"). The city of Mobile (pronounced "moh-BEEL") is Alabama's second-largest after Birmingham. Mobile has been celebrating Mardi Gras for longer than New Orleans.
2. Shine my shoes in Kosciuszko's homeland.

Answer: Polish polish

Tadeusz Kosciuszko was a Polish ("POE-lish") folk hero and military leader, who later became a colonel in the American Revolution. Shoe polish is pronounced "Paul-ish".
3. Aged and impressive, like the Perseid meteor shower.

Answer: August august

The adjective "august" ("oh-GUST") means "dignified, respected." The Latin root, Augustus, is the name Gaius Octavius took for himself when he became Roman Emperor. The month August ("AW-gust") was named in honor of Augustus, as July was named for his adopted father Julius Caesar. The Perseids occur in July and August.
4. Checking the paper riding a railroad out of Philadelphia.

Answer: Reading reading

Reading Lines ("redding") was one of many major Mid-Atlantic railways, transporting coal out of northeast Pennsylvania to Philadelphia and New Jersey. Reading Railroad has since been immortalized as an asset in Monopoly. The act of reading is pronounced "reeding."
5. Classified ad for the guy who said "the Lord giveth, and the Lord hath taken away."

Answer: Job job

God tested Job (pronounced "jobe") by allowing for his family, riches, and health to be taken from him, to prove that Job will remain faithful even after losing everything. Job does exactly this, uttering the famous phrase above. Although we are told Job is a righteous and blessed man, we do not know what his job (pronounced "jawb") was.
6. More zesty, like in a Moroccan tourist destination.

Answer: Tangier tangier

Tangier ("TAN-jeer") is a city dating to the ancient Phoenicians, positioned on the western opening of the Strait of Gibraltar. Something zestier is tangier (tangy+er).
7. There's polite, and then there's "second-largest city on the Mediterranean French coast" polite.

Answer: Nice nice

Nice ("niece"), named for the goddess of victory and running shoes, is France's second-largest coastal city and the second-largest in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur (modern Provence), after Marseilles. I have no idea if the people there are actually nice (rhymes with "ice").
8. Some acreage owned by a certain Greek god.

Answer: Ares ares

Ares ("AIR-ees") is the Greek god of war. In the metric system, ares ("airs") are one-hundredth of a hectare. Surprisingly, ares and acres are from different systems and have an unrelated etymology ("are" from "area," "acre" from "agro-").
9. A delicious breakfast treat (however you pronounce it) had at a Scottish palace.

Answer: Scone scone

Scone, the breakfast pastry, can rhyme with "gone" or "bone." Both variations can be found on both sides of the Atlantic. Scone Palace (pronounced "skoon"), near Perth, Scotland, was the site of Robert the Bruce's coronation.
10. My Hamburg friend, who's trying to cut a few pounds.

Answer: Dieter dieter

The name Dieter (DEE-ter) is a shortened form of Dietrich. Both names can be a forename or a surname, but it's rare in the case of Dieter. A dieter (DIE-eh-ter) tries to lose weight.
