Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:
Interestingly, although maybe not surprisingly, the majority of these famous Canadian comedians were born in Ontario, where perhaps the best opportunities are found (or were, in their day) to get a start in the business in Canada.
Comedians often get their greatest exposure through television shows with sketch comedy, such as "Saturday Night Live", and in Canada, many of the names on this list got their start on "Second City Television" (or "SCTV" for short). John Candy, Eugene Levy, Rick Moranis, and Martin Short were part of that stellar cast, along with other names (not listed here) like Robin Duke, Joe Flaherty, Andrea Martin, Catherine O'Hara, Harold Ramis, Tony Rosato, and Dave Thomas.
But some of the Canadian comedic greats on this list DID get their big starts on "SNL", such as Mike Myers, Dan Aykroyd, and Phil Hartman, and it was on "In Living Color" that Jim Carrey first got widespread attention.
The other notable names on the list - Seth Rogen, Leslie Nielsen, Tom Green, and Howie Mandel - were more self-made, finding different routes to comedic fame. Some were better known for dramatic roles before testing the waters with comedy, or they developed local fame that became more widely known.
Suffice it to say, this list only scratches the surface of the depth of comedic talent that Canada has produced over the years.
