While many people think his very first film was the 1979 dystopian action hit "Mad Max", it was not. Mel Gibson actually made his film debut two years earlier in the 1977 low-budget (I have seen it called micro-budget) Australian surf movie "Summer City".

Gibson was cast as Scollop, a quiet, shy surfer, who was very different from the tough-guy action heroes he would later play. He was paid just $400 for the low-budget movie. A co-star in the film, Steve Bisley, would join him just two years later in "Mad Max", playing Max's police partner, Jim Goose.

Luckily, his last installment in the "Mad Max" series was quite successful: it roughly tripled its investment. So, after "Thunderdome", he left Australia and would not return to the Antipodean shores' film industry until he made "Hacksaw Ridge" there in 2016.

Interestingly, his co-star in "Thunderdome" Tina Turner, was moving in the same direction. She, like Mel, was an American with a foothold in the Australian scene and the year before the movie's release she had made her return to American music with the insanely successful "Private Dancer" album.

Following his success with "Thunderdome", Mel Gibson became a true Hollywood A-lister by starring as the insane LAPD Detective Martin Riggs in the "Lethal Weapon" franchise. The 1987 movie had Gibson starring with Danny Glover, who played his by-the-book, soon-to-retire partner Murtaugh.

For the longest time, I thought that was what all "buddy cop" movies were. Little did I know that they very well may have been the first to be that good. I mean they were like a LA located, tough guy version of Bogart and Rains in "Casablanca". Directed by Richard Donner and written by Shane Black (Yep, Hawkins from "Predator"), the film was a massive commercial success, spawning three highly successful sequels. It eventually made over $950 million worldwide.

While Mel Gibson's version is now most people's idea of the legendary Scottish hero, William Wallace, "Braveheart" is practically a masterclass in Hollywood rewriting history. The real William Wallace was a late 13th-century knight, but almost everything else in the movie was "heavily fictionalized".

Did you know, the name "Braveheart" never actually belonged to Wallace, that title exclusively belonged to Robert the Bruce, whose heart was actually carried into battle in a silver casket after his death? Also, the movie's romance with Princess Isabella is impossible. At the time of the real Battle of Falkirk, Isabella was only three years old and living in France. Romance, impossible!
Also, the film features the Scots wearing tartan kilts, which actually were not invented or worn in Scotland until roughly 300 years later, and another thing - the swords are all wrong!

On July 28, 2006, Mel Gibson was pulled over by an LA County Sheriff's deputy on the Pacific Coast Highway for speeding and driving under the influence. When the officer got him out of the car, Gibson launched into an antisemitic tirade against the arresting officer, famously claiming that "the Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world" and asking the cop if he was a Jew.

The leaked arrest report became a global scandal that severely damaged his public image. His agency dropped him, planned projects were cancelled, and he was effectively blacklisted by major Hollywood studios for the next decade.

Doss saved 75 men during the brutal Battle of Okinawa without ever carrying a weapon or firing a single shot. He did this by lowering them one-by-one down the cliff while he was under heavy fire.

This story fit with Gibson's personal style, balancing war and faith. The film was a critical and commercial success, grossing $180 million worldwide and scoring six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and a Best Director nod for Gibson.

These "unconventional" roles were created by President Donald Trump with the stated goal of revitalizing domestic film and television production by on-shoring lost business. Trump claimed that Hollywood had "lost much business over the last four years to foreign countries" and stated that this trio of actors (Gibson, Jon Voight, and Sylvester Stallone) would serve as his "eyes and ears" on the ground to bring back "The Golden Age of Hollywood".

More than 20 years after "Passion" shattered box-office records, or at least made Gibson a multi-multi-millionaire, Mel returned to Italy to direct the two-part follow-up titled "The Resurrection of the Christ". Principal photography began on October 6, 2025, at the same venue where the 2004 original was filmed.

Gibson and his production crew shot Part One and Part Two in 134 days on a budget of roughly $200 million. Because the sequel takes place mere days after the events of the original film and they couldn't afford the digital de-aging to keep the original cast, they recast basically everyone and got Finnish actor Jaakko Ohtonen in as Jesus.
