Tod Gordon founded ECW as Eastern Championship wrestling in 1992. In 1993, Gordon replaced lead booker Eddie Gilbert with Paul Heyman. Heyman booked the promotion using a more hardcore wrestling style. ECW was rebranded as Extreme Championship in 1994. Gordon sold the promotion to Paul Heyman in 1995.
2. In 1994, who controversially became the first official Extreme Championship Wrestling World Heavyweight Champion?

On August 27, 1994, a tournament for the vacant NWA World Heavyweight Championship was held in Philadelphia in the ECW Arena. The tournament final was a bout between Shane Douglas and 2 Cold Scorpio. Shane Douglas won the match for the vacant championship.

After the match, Douglas dropped the NWA World Heavyweight Championship belt and declared himself the first Extreme Championship Wrestling World Heavyweight Champion. Douglas gave a scathing speech declaring the NWA to be dead. Only Shane Douglas, Tod Gordon and Paul Heyman knew this event would happen. The NWA Board of Directors were left stunned and disappointed. Eastern Champion Wrestling became Extreme Championship Wrestling soon after this match.

Joey Styles was a commentator for ECW from 1993 to its 2001. Styles served as the lone commentator for the "ECW Hardcore TV" program.
