A near disaster was the making of ' ' in 1963. Costing $44 million with an original $2 million , the film was plagued by illness, change of studios and directors. It was mainly the Box-office pulling power of the stars, Richard Burton and , that finally put them into profit.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

William McGonagall was a man who saw himself as supremely talented in many fields, despite everyone else's opinion to the contrary. Believing himself a worthy candidate, he walked from Dundee to Balmoral to offer himself as Poet Laureate to Queen Victoria, despite the fact that she appeared content with the incumbent, Alfred, Lord Tennyson. He wrote a poem called 'the Tay Bridge Disaster', which is widely believed to be the worst poem ever published. Aware of his reputation, the theatre owner refused to allow him the part of MacBeth unless he (McGonagall) paid him a considerable amount, so his work-mates, aware that it would be a remarkable evening, funded his performance. They weren't disappointed, and continued to cheer him on long after he finally "died" on stage.

'Doctor Dolittle' (1967) was a PR disaster from the start with the local residents of Castle Combe. As it was a period piece, the studio removed TV aerials, forbade the use of motor vehicles in the town, and even created a dam by blocking a local stream. Ranulph Fiennes, SAS officer and later leader of many international expeditions, was arrested in possession of explosives intended to demolish the dam. Eventually 20th Century Fox packed up and moved to warmer climes, though their woes continued throughout filming.

Filming of 'Cleopatra' started at Pinewood Studios in England, and in the first few months had lost its director and main writer, and was already over its $2 million budget with only 10 minutes of footage. It subsequently came in as by far the most expensive movie to that date. Mankiewicz, the new director, moved production to Rome, where Burton and Taylor's steamy love affair caused an international scandal. When the box office returns fell short of hopes, 20th Century Fox started wooing the Academy for Oscar nominations. It won four (none for acting), and the box office picked up enough that it finished with a profit.

Milli Vanilli was formed when Fab Morvan and Rob Pilatus, two struggling singers, met Frank Farian, who liked their look but was not so keen on their singing. He signed them with promises to use their voices in the future, but recorded an album using other artists. Farian then sent them on tour, lip-synching to the recording. The fraud was only discovered when the hard drive malfunctioned, and a line was repeated over and over. Their Grammy was later revoked when the duo admitted the deception.

The so-called 'wardrobe malfunction' at the Super Bowl interval in 2004 caused widespread reaction, with many people condemning its perceived 'indecency'. While claiming publicly that it was an accident, there appears to be some evidence that it was a publicity stunt. This author has no opinion on the matter.
