We elect the United States President on the first Tuesday in November but it isn't until January 20th or 21st when Inauguration Day occurs. The event is held at the U.S. capital in Washington D.C. and the Chief Justice is typically in charge of the inauguration.

Since 2022, the second Sunday in February is the date of the Super Bowl. The meeting of the top two professional football teams used to be held in late January but that changed in 2004 when it was moved to the first Sunday in February. The sporting event is typically one of the most watched shows of the year and is held in different venues annually.

They call it "March Madness" for a reason. Sixty eight of college basketball's best teams meet in a frenzied winner take all tournament that ends in April but begins on the second week of March. The term "March Madness" was first popularized in 1939 when referring to the Illinois high school basketball tournament but has now become synonymous with college basketball.

April 15th is the official deadline to file your yearly taxes. Prior to 1955, the Internal Revenue Service had a deadline of March 15th. Due to the greater number of yearly returns and in an effort to give people more time to do their taxes correctly, the date was moved to April 15th.

Anna Jarvis was the first to celebrate Mother's Day in the United States. May 20th, 1908 was the date she celebrated her mother who had passed. The official date of Mother's Day is now the second Sunday in May since President Woodrow Wilson signed it into a proclamation in 1914.

In the United States, the positioning of the country and the planet reaches a tilted peak on a solstice between June 20 to June 22. This is the start of summer and the Northern Hemisphere of earth is tilted toward the sun to create the longest day and shortest night of the year.

"That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind". On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong said those famous words while on NASA's Apollo 11 mission. He was the first human to step onto the lunar surface. Buzz Aldrin was the second man to do so as Michael Collins orbited above.

Since 1959, South Williamsport, Pennsylvania has been the site of the biggest baseball event for young athletes. The Little League World Series is held annually in the middle of August and matches the top American baseball teams for teens and younger in a tournament to see who's the American champion.

At the same time, international teams compete to see who will play the U.S. in the championship game.

September 11, 2001 will be a day to live in infamy. Thousands lost their lives as two planes hit the Twin Towers in New York City due to a terrorist attack. Likewise, other plane attacks were made to the Pentagon and a plane diverted and crashed in Pennsylvania. Americans banded together to recover and September 11th was named Patriot Day on December 18, 2001 by President George W. Bush.

October is Breast Awareness Month and a reminder for women to have their annual checkup to catch for a disease that has taken far too many lives. Both men and woman have joined in the awareness and encouraged to wear pink on days to celebrate the month. You'll even see professional football players donning pink in October.

The day after Thanksgiving kicks off the Christmas shopping season. Black Friday has become the day when retail stores offer their biggest discounts and hope for a huge retail sales day. The day was named Black Friday by Philadelphia police officers in the 1950s when people got a little too carried away with their shopping sprees.

Christmas Eve is on December 24th and New Year's Eve occurs on December 31st. While neither day is technically the official holiday, both days are some of people's favorite days of the year. The anticipation before the start of the new year brings people out to parties and countdown celebrations.
