Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "Is That Kosher?" we learn that the word "fast" doesn't just mean "at a high speed." What else does it mean?

Answer: Not eating

The Frensky family are Jewish. That means that they celebrate a holiday called Yom Kippur. The episode doesn't go into great detail on what people do on Yom Kippur, but it tells us what people do NOT do on Yom Kippur: eat. The Jewish people have a term called "Fast." It does not mean to run like Usain Bolt or to drive like Dale Earnhardt. It means to not eat. This episode teaches us that on Yom Kippur, Jewish people go 24 hours without eating. It also teaches us that kids are not supposed to do this until they are 13. Francine's grandmother, Bubby, is baffled when she learns that her eight-year-old granddaughter is fasting. Francine is only doing it because her sister, Catherine, is doing it. Francine feels that she has to beat Catherine at everything.

There is a pizza party at Arthur's house on Yom Kippur. Initially, Francine does not want to go. Arthur gives Francine the e-mail address of his pen pal, Adil, because his family celebrates Ramadan, another holiday where people fast. When she e-mails him for fasting advice, he suggests hanging out with other people, saying that company makes it easier to fast. Taking this advice, Francine goes to Arthur's house with the intention of hanging out with the people there without eating. However, Francine fails to stop herself from eating pizza. On her way home, she feels like Bubby and Catherine will see her as a failure. When she gets home and talks to them, neither of them say that she is a failure. They both agree that she should not have been fasting to begin with. Catherine bakes a cake for everybody at the end of the episode.

Fasting also happens in other religions. Some Christians fast during Lent, for example.

Joan Rivers provides the voice of Bubby.
2. In "Room to Ride", the kids of Elwood City convince the grown-ups to vote for what?

Answer: Bike lanes

Binky rides his bike over a pot hole, crashes, and skins his knee. After bandaging his knee, his mother tells him that he is not allowed to ride his bike on the street ever again. When he goes outside to tell Mr. Frensky the news, Mr. Frensky tells him that there is an election next week in which the people of Elwood City will vote either in favor of adding extra bike lanes or against it. When Mr. Frensky tells Binky that some people will vote against it, Binky starts "The Bike Lane Brigade."

Initially, Binky tries to get his same-age friends to vote for bike lanes. Brain tells him that they are not allowed to vote because they are under 18. However, Brain also tells him that the kids can convince adults to vote for bike lanes. Binky and his friends all set out on their quest to convince adults to vote for bike lanes. They successfully convince a few adults to vote for bike lanes, but Binky is afraid they have not done enough. One day, Binky sees Lance Armstrong right outside the Sugar Bowl. He asks Armstrong if he would like to appear in a TV ad to convince people to vote for bike lanes. He tells Binky that he has heard of "The Bike Lane Brigade" and that they do not need his help because they are doing a great job. Binky is skeptical at first. In the end, Armstrong is proven right. "The Bike Lane Brigade" wins and there are more bike lanes in the streets. They even convinced Ms. McGrady to begin biking, something she said she was too old to do.

PBS stopped showing that episode because Armstrong was convicted of taking illegal substances. They last aired it in March of 2012. The episode can still be on dailymotion and Amazon Prime Video and it can still be found in the DVD "The Good Sport." Some of the dialogue about Armstrong hits differently now that this scandal is well-known, but I still say it's a good episode.
3. At the end of "The Frensky Family Fiasco", what does the Frensky family do together?

Answer: Go bowling

After watching a documentary in class about the importance of family in the lives of baboon, Francine comes up with a suggestion for her family. She suggests that they have a family night every Tuesday. They all agree to this. The first two nights, this does not seem to work very well.

They end up fighting more than ever. At the end of the episode, Francine realizes that everyone in her family loves to go bowling. So at the end of the episode, Francine tells the audience that her family has bonded by bowling together.
4. In "Bats in the Belfry", where do Arthur and D.W. find a bat?

Answer: In Grandma Thora's attic

Grandma Thora cleans out the attic and lets her grandkids use it. They spend the night there and they discover a bat. At first they are afraid of it, but then they see that it's harmless. They leave the attic window open and it flies out before morning. Grandma Thora is unaware of the bat until her grandchildren tell her about it the next morning.

She talks to her son (the kids' father) who then builds a bat house near the attic window and then he puts a screen on the attic window so no more bats can get in. Two bats enter the bat house, one resembling Arthur and the other one resembling D.W.
5. In "For the Birds", what type of bird do Brain and Buster find that was believed to be extinct?

Answer: Green-tailed grebe

Not only did Brain think the green-tailed grebe was extinct, he wrote the script and the songs for the musical that Mr. Ratburn's class performed in "Elwood City Turns 100". One of those songs is about the green-tailed grebe and is sung by Fern. The song ends with Fern singing "The green-tailed grebe, she went extinct." Brain was stunned to be proven wrong.

"For the Birds" begins with Brain listening to the radio in his home and hearing that someone has found a green-tailed grebe and it is not extinct. This stuns Brain. He decides to go bird-watching because he has to find it. He sees that Mr. Ratburn is bird-watching too. Brain does not want anyone else to find out that he is looking for the green-tailed grebe because does not want anybody else to look for it. If somebody else finds it, Brain will not win the prize for being the first one to find it. So, Brain gets angry when Mr. Ratburn starts a bird-watching club at school. He gets even angrier when Buster tries to recruit more people to discover the green-tailed grebe.

Feeling bad about upsetting Brain, Buster impersonates a monster and scares most of the kids out of the forest. Buster and Brain team up to look for the green-tailed grebe, with Buster having his video camera ready. They see the green-tailed grebe and they are thrilled. Unfortunately, Buster forgot to put a tape in the camera, so they have no proof that they saw it. Brain decides that he does not need the prize; he is satisfied with just seeing it and he thanks Buster for his help.
6. In "Ungifted", what does Buster give to Arthur?

Answer: A toy thresher

Buster builds a toy thresher then he gives it to Arthur as a gift. Arthur then trades the thresher to Binky for a signed "Dark Bunny" poster. Buster gets upset when he learns the news. Arthur tries to make it up to Buster by making a card for him and by giving him the poster. Buster rejects those things and he tells Arthur that his uncle is coming over and wants to see the thresher. Arthur desperately tries to get it back.

He finds out that Binky gave it to Brain, who donated it to the school, where it ended up being part of a yard sale. Grandma Tibble gives it to Arthur, but then Tommy Tibble takes it out of Arthur's hand and throws it to Timmy Tibble, who catches it but then smashes it on the ground. Arthur fixes it and returns it to Buster, which makes him happy. Arthur and Buster then go to a store to find another model that they can build together.
7. In "The Chronicles of Buster", Buster helps Arthur with what activity?

Answer: Rock climbing

Mr. Ratburn teaches the kids rock climbing and promises to take the kids to Mount Krakhower if they become good enough. Buster is instantly great at it. Arthur is not. Buster promises to help Arthur for the next few weeks. However, every week, Buster fails to show up at the gym because he is watching a DVD, making Arthur angrier and angrier.

After Buster has a guilt-ridden nightmare, he makes it up to Arthur by scheduling some extra practices. Arthur eventually becomes good enough, the field trip happens, and they make it to the top of the mountain at the end of the episode.
8. In "The Cherry Tree", who has a cherry tree in their backyard at the beginning of the episode?

Answer: Muffy

Muffy intends to host a party in her back yard with a bouncy castle. Her father tells her that the bouncy castle is so big it will not fit in the back yard. Then, the father calls the neighbor and does a land swap. This gives the Crosswires a bigger piece of land, so now there's room for the bouncy castle. Muffy tells her father that he is the best businessman in the world before she finds out what he had to give up to get a bigger piece of land.

Later on, Muffy sees a large, beautiful cherry tree being cut down. Her father explains that after the land swap, the cherry tree now belongs to the neighbor and he can do what he wants with it. Muffy mourns the cherry tree. She feels even worse the next day at school, when George does an oral report on why tree-cutting is bad for the environment. Muffy decides to cancel the party, but then Bailey has a better idea. He has some new, young cherry trees. Upon his suggestion, the theme of the party is changed. All of the attendees dig a hole in Muffy's yard and plant a tree. She then gives them a tree to take home and plant in their backyards. Bailey praises Muffy for this and tells her that one day, there will be an entire cherry orchard in the back yard.
9. Whose brother makes his first appearance in "Matchmaker Matchbreaker"?

Answer: Muffy

Muffy has an older brother named Chip who never appeared before "Matchmaker Matchbreaker". That's because he was living at college. In "Matchmaker Matchbreaker" he comes home. The Crosswires have a special dinner in honor of him returning home and they invite the Frenskys to be part of the dinner. Muffy and Francine notice that Catherine and Chip seem to really like each other. Muffy and Francine think that Catherine and Chip will get married and that will make Muffy and Francine sister. They do their best to help the older siblings get married.

Chip and Catherine go to a movie together, and later they go to a restaurant. Muffy and Francine wear disguises and spy on them. Muffy and Francine get into an argument in which they both criticize the other one's older sibling and then they defend their own older sibling from the criticism. They then decide to trick their older siblings into breaking up. The older siblings catch on to the younger siblings' plan and they reprimand them. The younger siblings confess to their tricks and admitted that they wanted the older siblings to get married so that the younger siblings would be sisters. Chip and Catherine tell their younger siblings that they will never get married and they are not even dating. They are just friends. This means that Muffy and Francine will remain best friends and never be sisters.
10. In "I Owe You One", does Arthur ever ask for any of the favors that Buster owes him?

Answer: No

Arthur does a lot of favors for Buster, and Buster always tells him "I owe you one." No matter how many times Buster says "I owe you one," Arthur never collects. Buster's other friends are mad at Buster for asking Arthur to do all of these things for him while he never does anything for Arthur. Buster begins to feel guilty.

Then, it turns out that some of Buster's other friends did favors for Arthur and he never repaid them. To pay Arthur back, Buster does a lot of favors for his other friends so that Arthur does not have to do them. Arthur is unaware that this is going on and he is sad that his best friend hasn't played with him in two weeks.

When Buster finally explains what is going on, Arthur tells him that he does not owe any more favors to him and he just wants to play with his best friend again.

They shake hands at the end of the episode.
11. In "The Black Out", which family helps the Read family through this situation?

Answer: Molina

The Molinas (the family next door to the Reads) used to live in Ecuador, where there are many blackouts, so they are experts on how to deal with them. The Read family does not handle this blackout very well. The Molinas invite the Reads over to their place so they can teach them what they know.

At the end of the episode, they have a fiesta. Buster brings some tomatoes from his garden. Mr. Read brings the ham that he was saving for a different party that was cancelled. The power comes back on at the end of the episode, but the fiesta continues.
12. In "Mei Lin Takes a Stand", who tells a story that convinces Mei Lin to learn how to stand?

Answer: Pepe

Binky cannot teach Mei Lin how to stand. Mei Lin tells Kate and Pal that she does not want to learn how to stand because it's safer to crawl. Pepe and Sale are on Pal's back. Pal and Kate had befriended Pepe and Sale in the season nine episode "Flea to be You and Me", but Mei Lin threatens to get Binky to crush them. To avoid being crushed, Pepe tells a story about a baby who learned how to stand. Mei Lin likes the story and does not have Pepe crushed. Binky takes her home at the end of the episode. That night in her crib, Mei Lin stands. Binky is thrilled.
13. In "Home Sweet Home" who is the only one that goes to Camp Meadowcroak?

Answer: Buster

They all went to Camp Meadowcroak in the season one episode "Arthur Goes to Camp", but in the season 12 episode "Home Sweet Home" Buster is the only one that goes. He is nervous about going to camp alone with no one he knows. When the bus comes, he runs away and hides at the community garden. Fritz finds him sleeping on the soil there. When Buster explains what he is doing there, Fritz encourages Buster to take some risks and he gives him a tomato to take to camp. His mother also finds him there and takes him back to the bus. He ends up making several new friends at camp. While Buster is at camp, Fritz sends letter to Buster which he shares with his new friends. Fritz also sends tomatoes to Buster, which he and his new friends put into sandwiches which they enjoy.

When Buster gets home, he tells his mother that camp was great. He then goes to garden to tell Fritz that he and the other kids loved the letters and the tomatoes. Fritz then tells Buster that he is about to retire and Buster will be in charge of the community garden from now on. Fritz gives Buster the address to his retirement home. Buster sends Fritz a letter, which he shares with the other people at the home. Fritz tells them that Buster is a great gardener.
14. At the end of "Do You Believe in Magic?", who performs magic at the Tibbles' birthday party?

Answer: Arthur and Buster

Arthur and Buster learn magic in this episode. Buster is better at it than Arthur, which makes Arthur jealous. However, Buster gets nervous when he loses his magic wand while performing at D.W.'s birthday party. Arthur steps in and helps him do the tricks without the wand. Arthur then finds the wand and returns it to Buster, although now it's all chewed up because Pal had it. Buster than teaches Arthur some new tricks and at the end of the episode, they perform at the Tibbles' birthday party. The Tibbles are astonished.
15. In "D.W.'s Furry Freak Out", who owns the cat?

Answer: Dr. Frederique Fugue

A cat gets stuck in a tree and when a branch falls, the cat ends up in Buster's hands. Buster takes the cat to the Read house and it seems to like D.W. D.W. loves the cat. The Reads put up "Lost cat" signs with pictures of the cat as well as their phone number and address. D.W. keeps the cat in her room until the owner shows up.

Dr. Fugue shows up and claims the cat. It turns out he was away at the Mozartian Academy in Austria. He was quite sad when he came home and his cat was missing, but was glad to see that the Reads found it. The cat's name is "Fur Elise" named after the Beethoveen song. It turns out that the cat likes music, and it likes D.W. because she was playing the xylophone when it showed up. D.W. is sad to see the cat go, but Dr. Fugue says that D.W. is welcome to visit the cat whenever she wants if she learns to play her xylophone better.
