Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Based on a True Story" introduces which two characters?

Answer: Ladonna and Bud

Ladonna and Bud are in a military family that moves all the time. They usually move far away. They previously lived in Louisiana. They move from there to Elwood City and it's a 16-hour drive. Ladonna is Arthur's age and Bud is D.W.'s age, so Ladonna becomes one of Arthur's best friends and Bud becomes D.W.'s best friend.

Arthur and D.W. live four houses away from Ladonna and Bud. Arthur and D.W. knock on their new neighbors' door and introduce themselves to them. Arthur brings a rhubarb pie that his father made. Ladonna talks a lot, which makes Arthur and D.W. leave after first meeting them. However, after Mr. Haney introduces her to Mr. Ratburn's class as their newest classmate, Arthur saves her a seat.

At lunch, Ladonna tells stories of her life in Louisiana. The other kids love these stories and she quickly becomes popular. Eventually, she runs out of new stories to tell and starts repeating her old ones. This makes her afraid she is going to lose her friends. She decides to make up a story. Brain and Buster find flaws in this new story, which causes her to admit that it's a lie. Ironically, this is how she loses her friends.

The second half of the episode begins with Ladonna sitting by herself. Arthur tells his friends that they are being unfair to Ladonna and should give her a second chance. Buster agrees with him, admitting that he has lied, too. They both decide to sit with Ladonna again. Francine and Muffy hypocritically say that they do not want to give Ladonna a second chance because she lied to them. I don't know what gives Muffy the right to shame anyone for lying after the events of "Arthur and the True Francine" (the episode where Muffy cheats off of Francine's test, then Muffy tells the teacher that she did not cheat) and "How the Cookie Crumbles" (the episode in which Muffy's friends bake cookies for her and she tells everyone else that she made them all by herself). Francine has also lied ("Francine's Split Decision" comes to mind), so she also shouldn't be holding this against Ladonna.

Arthur and Buster tell Ladonna that they love her stories, but she does not have to tell stories for them to be her friend. They tell her to just be herself and don't lie. She promises to do that.

Bud goes to a fake tea party with D.W., but D.W. gets angry. I think Bud did nothing wrong and only D.W. is in the wrong. Bud does not know that D.W. is so unpopular, there's a youtube channel dedicated to hating her. Bud leaves the Read house, sad that D.W. does not like him. Later on, Bud wins D.W. back by scaring away the Tibbles with his "power stare" (in which he stares at them for along time without blinking).

One day when Ladonna is out for a walk, she takes her hat off and puts it down and a raccoon steals it. She is unable to catch it. She goes to a clothing store and buys a new hat that is identical to the her old hat. At recess, Ladonna tells the story of how she lost her old hat and got her new hat. Because the new hat is identical to the old one, her friends think that it IS the old one and that she is lying again.

After school, Arthur gives Ladonna a chance to prove that her story about the hat is true. She goes through a lot of trouble to do so. Just as Ladonna is about to give up, Arthur says that he believes her because she wouldn't go through this much trouble if she was lying. A few seconds later, Arthur sees the raccoon wearing the hat. The raccoon runs away but the hat falls off. Ladonna shows both hats to Francine and Muffy at lunch with Arthur backing her up. Ladonna gives her old hat to Francine. Francine says she likes it, thanks her for it, and apologizes for not believing her. Muffy hates the hat and thanks Ladonna for NOT giving it to her. The episode ends with Ladonna being the newest member of Arthur's friend group.
2. In "Flippity Francine," what kind of soccer kick does Francine do?

Answer: Pinwheel kick

The episode begins with Francine attempting to demonstrate this kick to Muffy, who is filming it. Francine trips in the mud and falls. Francine is mad because Muffy enjoys this even though this is not what she is trying to do. Muffy posts the video online and titles it "Flippity Francine." It becomes a hit.

At first, Francine is embarrassed that she became famous for this. Mr. Crosswire dresses up in a duck costume for his commercial and says that this tripled his business. This teaches Francine that you can be quite popular if you are okay with looking foolish. Francine decides to embrace her fame and do some more flips. For a while, the other kids enjoy these flips. Francine overdoes it and they get tired of these flips. During a soccer game, she hears someone calling her "Flippity," which distracts her and she trips again. This time, all of her friends except Muffy are mad at her and she no longer enjoys it.

Francine asks Buster for advice on how to stop being famous for this. She advises becoming famous for something else; something that she is truly proud of. She takes that advice and starts practicing her soccer moves. At the next soccer game, she scores the game-winning goal with a successful pinwheel kick. Buster's mother films this for the five o'clock news and she becomes famous for this. At the end of the episode she watches Mr. Crosswire's commercial again to remember how she became inspired to become Flippity.
3. In "Muffy Takes the Wheel," does Muffy design her own car for the Lakewood Derby?

Answer: Yes

Mr. Ratburn announces the First Annual Lakewood Derby, in which the kids are asked to make toy cars out of small blocks of wood, and then the cars will be raced. Mr. Ratburn tells the kids that they might need help from their parents, but most of the work should be the kids' work. Muffy asks her father to help with the assignment because he's an expert on cars.

He ends up designing an entire model car by himself, although it's based on a real car that he has in his shop. Muffy loves it, but she rejects it because it's his design and not hers. Muffy had been watching him design the car and she took notes.

She designs her own car. Her own car finishes second in the race (George wins, as usual). She admits to her father that she'd have won the race if she'd used his car.

The episode ends with Mr. Crosswire buying the real car that had been the basis for his model car and giving Muffy a ride in it.
4. In "Get Smart," Hugo becomes Mr. Ratburn's teaching assistant. Hugo is a... what?

Answer: Computer

Mr. Haney chooses Mr. Ratburn's class to experiment with his new teaching assistant, Hugo. Hugo is a talking computer that can recognize people's voices and faces. A lot of information is stored in Hugo. It claims to be 100% accurate. Brain does not believe that.

In class, Mr. Ratburn says that Elwood City's founder, Jacob Ketzenellenbogan, opened the first steam-powered sawmill in Elwood City. Hugo says that is incorrect and that Francis Wheaton is the one who opened the sawmill. Most of the class is shocked that Mr. Ratburn is wrong. Brain thinks that Hugo is the one who is wrong.

The next day, a bitter Mr. Ratburn has some index cards with the toughest questions he knows. He asks Hugo all of them and Hugo answers them all correctly. This astonishes most of the class. Brain remains unimpressed.

Brain goes to the library to do some research because he cannot find anything about the sawmill on the internet. Ms. Turner is thrilled to see someone who still relies on books. Eventually, Brain finds a newspaper article that was published on the day the sawmill opened that has a picture of Jacob Katzenellenbogan. This proves that Mr. Ratburn is correct. The newspaper article says that the man in the picture is Francis Wheaton, but the article is wrong and so is Hugo.

Brain also found Jacob's great-nephew and last living descendent, Alfred. Alfred comes in with a document that proves his great-uncle is the one who had the sawmill built. Hugo simply cannot accept this new information. When Mr. Ratburn tells Hugo to admit that it is not 100% accurate, it malfunctions and then it explodes, causing the whole class to cheer. At the end of the episode, Mr. Ratburn asks Alfred to tell the class about the time that he visited his great-nephew's sawmill. The episode concludes while Alfred is telling the story.
5. In "Baby Steps," how does Kate please D.W.?

Answer: By saying "D.W."

When Binky and Mei Lin come over to the Read house, D.W. notices that Mei Lin can do a lot of things that Kate cannot do. Mei Lin can play the piano, say "Hello," and make Binky burp. D.W. tries to make Kate do those things. All Kate can do is see that D.W. is moving in a very strange way and Kate often squirts milk at D.W. to make her stop. Kate and Pal think that something is wrong with D.W.

Most of the episode is D.W. and Kate trying to cure each other with some help from their friends. I'd say that Kate is more in the right than D.W. Kate is not the only person who thinks that something is wrong with D.W. (youtuber Matt Neff has a whole channel about things wrong with D.W.). Besides, Kate has some fun with these experiments while D.W. just gets mad. However, regardless of who is right or wrong, neither girl can cure each other for most of the episode. They both have nightmares in which they will have to take care of the other one like a baby or a dog for the rest of their lives. Near the end of the episode, Kate says "D.W." That thrills D.W. and she runs off to tell the rest of her family that Kate said "D.W." Kate tells Pal that she cured D.W. just by moving her mouth the way D.W. moves her mouth.
6. In "Night of the Tibble," who is the first person ever to go to a sleepover at the Tibble house?

Answer: James

The Tibbles want to have a sleepover, but they are unpopular so no one wants to go to a sleepover with them. When they ask James, he is too nice and too shy to tell them the truth, so have caves and goes to the sleepover. Emily and D.W. try to help him say no to them, but their suggestions involve lying which his conscience will not let him do. At one point, he tells them the truth, but that makes them cry so he changes his mind. He finally goes to the sleepover.

The next day, James is not in school. D.W. and Emily brings flowers to his mother. They both make it clear to each other that they think the Tibbles killed him. When they ring the doorbell, James answers it. They are astonished that he is alive. He explains that the sleepover was not what he expected. The twins had stayed up all night preparing for the sleepover and they fell asleep as soon as James arrived, so it was essentially just James and their grandmother. Grandma Tibble is a great cook, but James ate too much food. He stayed home from school because he had a stomachache. After word gets out that James enjoyed his sleepover with the Tibbles, everyone else wants to be invited to a sleepover at their house too.
7. In "Read and Flumbergast," how does D.W. get Tommy to confess to stealing Bud's red cupcake?

Answer: She puts another red cupcake in front of Tommy

Bud goes to D.W.'s house to tell her what happened at school. Ms. Morgan handed out cupcackes and Bud took one with red icing. Tommy made Bud look away for a second and when Bud looked back, his cupcake was gone. Tommy had red icing on his mouth, so Bud knew that Tommy took the cupcake. However, Bud could not get Tommy to confess or make it up to him. So he asked for D.W.'s help.

There ends up being a trial in the Read backyard. Buster is the judge. D.W. is Bud's lawyer. Timmy is Tommy's lawyer. At first, it looks like D.W. and Bud will lose the case. Tommy says that he hates cupcakes. Then, D.W. convinces her father to bake some cupcakes, one of which has red icing. D.W. puts it in front of Tommy, telling him that he would never eat it because he hates cupcakes. Tommy eats it, contradicting what he said. He ends up confessing to stealing Bud's cupcake. Bud tells D.W. that her father's cupcakes taste great, but justice tastes even better.
8. In "The Last Tough Customer," who is the last tough customer?

Answer: Molly

This episode's introduction shows us Molly when she was younger. Two bullies mocked her haircut and it made her cry. This caused her to wear her hair below her eyes and climb to the top of the jungle gym where she felt safe. This is the beginning of her becoming a tough customer (a bully).

After the title card, we see the tough customers' humorously unsuccessful attempts at bullying. They meet at Brain's ice cream shop to come up with a change of identity. Rattles, Binky, and Slink try various new things. Molly refuses to participate and hates all these new ideas. She continues to bully people, and then she takes her younger brother James away with her.

One day, James pushes a young girl away from a water fountain. The young girl climbs to the top of the jungle gym and cries. Molly looks at her and realizes that's exactly what she did when she was that girl's age and she was bullied. Molly asks James why he did this. He says it's because his older sister always does this. Molly asks James to apologize to the girl. James only agrees to do it if Molly apologizes to everyone that she bullied. Molly agrees to this and then we hear Molly's apology letter which she sent to her victims. She promises to never bully again.
9. In "Brain's Chess Mess," who is great at chess?

Answer: Rattles

Brain consistently loses to a girl nicknamed Los Dedos (we never learn her real name). Los Dedos is Spanish for the fingers and she is called that because she distracts her opponents by drumming her fingers. To beat her, Brain starts a chess club. Several people join just for the free snacks that he offers and they are not good at chess. Rattles notices the club and does not join it, but he lets Brain know that he knows a lot about chess. Rattles consistently beats Brain, but then he gives Brain some advice.

Brain asks Rattles to challenge Los Dedos. Rattles seems to agree, but on the day of the match, Rattles seems to be too sick to play. Rattles tells Brain that he is now good enough to take her on. When Brain walks away from Rattles' house, Rattles smiles and reveals to the audience that he was faking it and he's fine. Brain beats Los Dedos. Rattles shows up at the match and congratulates him. He admits he was faking it because he wanted Brain to prove that he can take it. Rattles agrees to join the chess club on the condition that Brain serve whatever snacks Rattles wants.
10. At the end of "Baseball Blues," what position does George excel at?

Answer: Commentator

George loves baseball and he knows a lot about baseball. He has a lot of books about it. However, when he joins the little league baseball team, he finds out that he is not good at playing baseball. This makes him sad. His father makes a special baseball bat just for him.

He ends up letting the whole team use it. It's a great bat. Francine routinely hits home runs with it. George, however, is still no good even with this bat. He goes to the Frensky place to tell the coach (Mr. Frensky) that he will quit the team and he will give his bat to Francine. Francine is too sick to leave home, but she wants to know what happens in the game. With Mr. Frensky's permission, George borrows the coach's cell phone and commentates the game from the sideline over the cellphone so Francine knows what's going on. Sportswriter Harry Mills sits next to George and tells everyone that George is a great commentator.

At the end of the episode, George is officially Elwood City's little league baseball commentator.
11. In "Brain's Biggest Blunder," we learn that Brain is not a good math tutor. Who is a good math tutor?

Answer: Binky

There is a team math competition at Lakewood Elementary School. Brain, Buster, and Binky are on one team. Buster is not very good at math, so Brain invites him over to his house for tutoring. Brain has come up with some new tutoring methods that he experiments on Buster. Those do not work and they make Buster miserable. Before the championship game, Binky goes to Buster's house and meanly tells him "We're going for a walk." Buster thinks that Binky is going to kill him. Actually, Binky has discovered that Brain's tutoring methods have not worked, so Binky uses his tutoring methods on Buster. Binky explains how he used to struggle at math and how he became good at it. Binky's methods work very well and make Buster happy. Buster answers the championship-winning multiplication question.

After the contest, Brain asks Buster how Binky was a better tutor than him. Buster explains that he needed someone who used to struggle like he did to understand him and help him.
12. In "Buster's Book Battle," what is the name of the not-yet-published book that becomes Buster's favorite book?

Answer: City of Droids

Lakewood Elementary School implements a project that gives toys as prizes for reading certain books. They have a list of books and each book has an online test. If the kids answer the test questions correctly, they get points. With those points, they can buy toys. Longer books have more test questions so they can earn the kids more points. Different toys cost more points. The most expensive toy is a skateboard. Buster and Francine decide to try to win the skateboard.

Buster leads a lot of short, easy book for kindergarteners. Those get him some points. Francine reads the most difficult book series on the school's reading list and she gets more points. When Buster learns that longer books will get him more points, he gets a copy of the book that Francine is reading. He does not enjoy it or understand it. Just as he is about to give up, his mother gives him an unpublished book.

Ms. Baxter has a client who wrote a story called "City of Droids." The client wants Ms. Baxter's approval before it gets sent to publishers. She gives it to her son. Buster reads it and loves it. However, he is disappointed when he learns that the school will give him no points for reading it (because it's not published). Mr. Ratburn encourages Buster to keep reading the book just because he enjoys reading it and not to worry about the points or the prizes.

Buster is conflicted about what to do. He enjoys "City of Droids," but he wants the skateboard. He has a nightmare in which the main characters of each book argue with each other over which book he should read. "City of Droids" wins. Buster does not get the skateboard, but he is happy that he read "City of Droids" and he no longer cares about the skateboard. Francine is flabbergasted because the skateboard is really tiny. Since Buster is the happier kid, the lesson of the episode is to read what you want to read and not just read what's popular.
13. In "On the Buster Scale," Buster has an ongoing argument with who?

Answer: Brain

Buster and Brain have different opinions about movies. They never agree and they always argue over whether any movie is good or bad. Buster's mother helps Buster get his review published in the newspaper. Brain starts a movie blog. The feud keeps escalating.

In the end, Arthur tells them "We read your reviews because we respect your opinions, but you two need to respect other people's opinions." The one thing that Buster and Brain agree on is that Arthur might be right about that.
14. In "Fern and the Case of the Stolen Story," who does Fern steal stories from?

Answer: Ladonna

Fern is having trouble coming up with a story. Without asking Fern's permission first, Muffy tells Fern that she arranged for her to tell a story at the Crosswire house. Fern is terrified that she will have nothing. Ladonna comes along and tells Fern that she knows a lot of stories but she never writes them down. Ladonna tells a story and Fern writes it down.

Fern tells Ladonna's story at Muffy's place, except Fern tells the kids that it's her own story. Most of the kids applaud. Ladonna is mad. After this, Ladonna tells Fern part of another story. Fern steals that story too, and she tells it at Muffy's second Fiction Forum. Again, everyone applauds except Ladonna. This time, Ladonna also has a story to read. Her story is about Fern and her stealing Ladonna's stories. For a few minutes, Fern angrily denies these accusations. Eventually, Fern admits that she stole Ladonna's stories and she apologizes to Ladonna. Ladonna acknowledges that some elements of Fern's stories are Fern's and they agree to write a story together.
15. In "The Best Day Ever," who played a major role in everyone else's best day ever?

Answer: Arthur

This episode is mostly a clip show (it mostly shows clips of old episodes). Arthur, George, Sue Ellen, Buster, and Binky are lying in the sun on a summer talking about their best days ever. George tells the story of "Arthur's Dummy Disaster," in which Arthur stops George from quitting the poetry reading after Wally fell apart and convinces George to read the poem without Wally. Binky tells the story of "Big Brother Binky," which concludes with the Barnes family and the Read family having dinner together at a Chinese restaurant. Sue Ellen says that it was when Arthur found her diary in "Sue Ellen's Lost Diary." Buster says that it's when he got back from his long trip and played checkers with Arthur. Arthur cannot think of a best day ever. George points out that Arthur played a major role in all of their best days.

The other kids agree. This makes Arthur decide that the present day is his best day ever. Even heavy rain does not ruin it.
