Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "Sue Ellen Moves In", who thinks that Sue Ellen and D.W. are aliens?

Answer: Buster

When Arthur and Buster notice a family moving into a new house, they sneak around to one of the windows and look inside. They see lights and TV turn on by themselves and then they run away scared. Buster concludes that the inhabitants of the house are invisible and they must be aliens. The next day, Arthur makes a periscope out of a milk carton and mirrors and he and Buster return to the house, this time to spy on them with the periscope. Through the periscope, they can see the inhabitants. Buster concludes that the new people are aliens that have the power to turn themselves invisible and visible at will. Sometime later, Buster hears some foreign music coming from the house which he thinks is alien music. He theorizes that Earth is filled with aliens disguised as people. When Buster actually meets the young girl who lives there (Sue Ellen), he is even more suspicious of her when she admits that she has never seen snow before. He thinks that space ships sometimes send these aliens to Earth as part of the plot to invade Earth, and he thinks that Sue Ellen and D.W. are two of them.

It turns out that Sue Ellen's family travel all around the world. The "alien" music really originated from Africa. The house's lights and TV are on a timer. She didn't recognize snow because she had only lived in warm climates. At the end of the episode, Buster still believes that Sue Ellen and her family are aliens, but friendly ones. Everybody else knows that they are just regular people who have traveled a lot.
2. In "The Perfect Brother", Brain's real name is revealed. What is it?

Answer: Alan

Shortly after the title card, Jane tells Arthur that Alan will be staying with them for a few days. Initially, Arthur is confused because he doesn't seem to recognize the name Alan. He then realizes that is Brain's real name. At first, he and Brain have fun together. However, Arthur soon gets jealous because Brain does everything better than he does and everybody likes Brain better than they like him. Brain does his homework more quickly than Arthur, beats Arthur at basketball, builds a better model airplane than Arthur, teaches Pal new tricks, shows David how to make sandwiches more efficiently, reprogram's Jane's computer, reads better than Arthur, eats better than Arthur, and plays a board game better than Arthur. Buster tells Arthur that Brain is nice and he isn't trying to make Arthur look bad.

When it is time for Brain to go home, Arthur goes with him. Arthur is shocked to discover that Brain's room at home is a mess. Brain reveals that he was a guest in the Read house and he had to be polite and it was killing him. When Arthur volunteers to help Brain's father with the groceries, Brain's father asks why Brain can't be more like Arthur. At the end of the episode, it was Brain's turn to be jealous. Brain and Arthur remain good friends, though.
3. In "D.W.'s Snow Mystery", Buster thinks that who stole D.W.'s snowball?

Answer: Aliens

"D.W.'s Snow Mystery" revealed that D.W. had a snowball in the freezer for a year. During the previous winter, she had the best day of her life, and she made that snowball to remember it forever. Her mother allowed her to keep it in the freezer. It stayed there for a year. At the beginning of the episode, the snowball is gone and D.W. is devastated. D.W., Arthur, Buster, and Francine try to figure out what happened to it. They all come up with various theories. Buster concludes that it was stolen by aliens. At the end of the episode, we see aliens eating a snowball, which suggests that he may have been right.

This episode first aired in November of 1996. What happened to the snowball was revealed in February of 2022. Yes, it took that long for us to find out the answer.
4. In "Bully For Binky", who is Binky afraid of?

Answer: Sue Ellen

Before the title card, we learn that Binky has been the biggest bully in school for years and we see some examples of his bullying, including him stealing crayons from Arthur and him standing in front of Arthur and Buster so they cannot see the parade. After the title card, Arthur, Buster, and Francine try to brainstorm ways to deal with him. As they are doing so, they notice him insulting Sue Ellen. She challenges him to a fight after school, which shocks everyone. Later, Sue Ellen tells Binky that she does tae kwon do. Binky does not know what that is, but then his friends show him an example of women's tae kwon do on TV. Suddenly, Binky is afraid of Sue Ellen. He talks to Francine, who suggests that he stop bullying people and focus more on music. Binky thinks that means that he should humiliate Sue Ellen in music.

In music class, the teacher assigns Binky and Sue Ellen to work on a musical piece together. On the night of the performance, Binky announces that both of them will do improvisational jazz before they play their song. Binky does some great jazz music, but then Sue Ellen does some even better jazz music. Binky walks out, feeling humiliated that Sue Ellen beat him. Arthur finds him and explains that he cannot always beat everyone and that it is not important to. Arthur tells Binky that he and Sue Ellen are the two best musicians in the school and together they make amazing music. Binky goes back inside and he and Sue Ellen play the song together and everyone loves it. The next day at lunch, Binky tries to steal someone's dessert, but he gives it back when he sees Sue Ellen. Arthur then draws a picture of what he calls the only anti-Binky weapon (Sue Ellen).
5. In "Arthur's Tooth", who calls Arthur a baby?

Answer: Francine

While most of the kids in third grade have already lost at least one tooth, Arthur has not. Arthur has one loose tooth, but he cannot seem to make it fall out. Francine spends most of the episode teasing him over this. Initially, the other kids laugh with her.

At the end of the episode, they are all tired of her and they walk away from her. This makes her angry and she throws a baseball in disgust. It hits Arthur and knocks out his loose tooth. He then gives it to Francine because she said that she was the tooth fairy.
6. In "D.W. Gets Lost", does D.W.'s mother ever notice that D.W. is lost?

Answer: No

D.W. wants earrings, so her mother takes her to the mall. There, they see Muffy's father, who wants to talk to D.W.'s mother. While they are talking, D.W. wanders off and walks around the store. By doing this, she gets lost. She becomes terrified that she might be lost forever and she might never find her mother. Eventually, she sees Emily, whose ears have turned green because of the earrings that she got. Nadine convinces D.W. to ask Emily where D.W.'s mother is. Emily gives D.W. directions to where her mother is.

When D.W. finds her mother, her mother says, "Thank you for waiting so quietly for five whole minutes," which means that Jane had no idea that D.W. had wondered off and gotten lost. D.W. tells her mother that she no longer wants earrings until she is older. Her mother praises her for making a very grown-up decision, oblivious to the fact that the reason she made this decision is because she saw Emily's ears.
7. In "D.W. Thinks Big", does D.W. get to help out at her aunt Lucy's wedding?

Answer: Yes

For most of the episode, D.W. is desperate to help out at her aunt Lucy's wedding. At first, all of the wedding jobs are given to people older than her. She spends most of the episode mad that no one wants her to help out at the wedding. Things get worse when she meets her bratty cousin Cora, the flower girl. Cora gets to sleep in D.W.'s bed while D.W. has to sleep in a sleeping bag on the floor, and Cora insults D.W.'s ring. Cora also breaks her own locket and D.W. gets blamed and punished for it.

At the wedding, Arthur, the ring bearer, attempts to do his job perfectly. Cora shouts "Smile!" which distracts Arthur and he accidentally launches the ring into the air and it lands inside the organ. The organ player finds a small opening inside the organ and says that a small child might be able to fit inside and get the ring. Arthur volunteers, but he is too big. Cora is told to do it, but she refuses to because it's dirty and her mother takes her side as everybody else gasps in horror. D.W. then volunteers. She screams in horror when she sees a spider, and the dirt makes her cough, but she braves through all of it and gets the ring. Arthur then lets her be the ring bearer as a reward for finding the ring. Then, Lucy takes the crown off of Cora's head and puts it on D.W.'s head, so D.W. also gets to be the flower girl. D.W. handles both jobs very well.
8. In "My Dad The Garbage Man", whose dad is a garbage man?

Answer: Francine

Some of the parents have volunteered to allow Mr. Ratburn's class to go to their workplaces. These parents give them a tour to give kids ideas about career options.

First, they go to Muffy's father's car dealership. That does not go so well. Even though he's rich, he has quite a few problems revealed in this episode. First of all, he says that he works every day, even weekends and holidays, and we see Muffy crying while he is saying this. Secondly, he takes them to one room which he says is always busy, and then it is not busy. Then, he takes them to the room where the employees talk about how to serve the customers. That's when they overhear someone saying that if a car loses its engine when it leaves the building, it's the customer's problem. The last place he takes them is filled with cars, where he promises to allow 8-year-old unlicensed kids to drive the cars. The kids are excited, but Mr. Ratburn passes and takes the kids back to the bus.

They then visit Brain's mother's ice cream show. She takes them to the invention room which has the flavors used to make the ice cream, including candy and chocolate. She then lets the kids make their own flavor, which she calls "Rocky Ratburn". Buster is in charge of making it and everyone follows his orders. He's proud of "Rocky Ratburn", but Mr. Ratburn doesn't like it.

After this, Mr. Ratburn says that they will visit Francine's father the next day. When Francine gets home, Catherine warns her not to let anyone know that her father is a garbage man. She asks her father when he will get a "real job." He then says that in a "real job," he'd have to wear a suit and tie, carry a briefcase, and work late and not have enough time to spend with his daughters. It's worth noting that Muffy's father has this kind of job and, while Muffy lives in a much bigger home than Francine, Francine had seen Muffy crying when Mr. Crosswire talked about how much he works and how little time he spends at home. Mr. Frensky then says that he never learned to tie a tie because no one showed him how, and then he and Francine laugh because it was a joke.

The next day, they go to the dump. At first, the kids are not happy to be there, especially not Muffy. Mr. Frensky is enthusiastic to talk about his job, no matter how much the other kids aren't. He shows them the great things about being a garbage man. He says that the best part of being a garbage man is driving a bulldozer. He says that the second-best part is that you get to use a crushing machine that crushes the garbage to little pieces. He then shows the kids a playground built out of garbage. The kids go and play. Francine is proud of her father. Sue Ellen tells Francine that her father is the best father in the world.
9. In "Arthur's Substitute Teacher Trouble", who was the substitute?

Answer: Ms Ratburn

The other three are substitutes that the kids have had in the past, but the one they have in this episode is Mr. Ratburn's sister: Ms Ratburn. Ms Ratburn makes the class way too easy for 3rd graders (teaching the one times table, teaching them the four seasons, etc.) At first, the kids enjoy it, but they quickly get bored.

The next day, some of them try to convince their parents that they are sick so they can stay home, but it doesn't work for any of them. Fortunately, Mr. Ratburn returns the next day.

The kids learn to appreciate how challenging Mr. Ratburn's work is.
10. In "I'm a Poet", who speaks for the first time?

Answer: Fern

She appears in most episodes, but "I'm a Poet" is the first time that we learn her name. Her name is first mentioned when Mr. Ratburn tells the class that she is the only one whi has signed up for the poetry club. The other kids mock her for this because she rarely talks and they don't understand why someone who rarely talks would want to read a poem. She angrily tells them that she bets none of them can write a poem. The bet is that they all have to write one and read it at the library, or they all have to join the poetry club for a year. All the kids take the bet and they all write a poem. Arthur and Buster initially try to do this by reading a poem they like and writing one like it. That plan doesn't work very well. They then ask Fern for help and she tells them that they should write about what they like instead of copying other people's poems.

In the end, all of these kids read a poem in the library, Fern likes them all, and Fern concedes that she lost the bet. However, the kids decide to join the poetry club anyway.
11. What famous poet appears in "I'm a Poet?"

Answer: Jack Prelutsky

Jack Prelutsky is the first of several major celebrities to appear on the show. Unlike many of the other ones, he is animated as a human instead of an anthropomorphic animal.

The episode begins with Arthur reading "My Sister is a Sissy" as we see D.W. acting out the poem. He runs the poetry club. The kids in Mr. Ratburn's class read a poem in front of him for a "poetry contest." When he's ready to announce the winner, he says that he hates contests and announces that everybody wins. In the library, he reads two of his own poems, "Today is Very Boring" and "Jellyfish Stew".
12. In "The Scare-Your-Pants-Off Club", whose parents try to get these books banned?

Answer: Muffy

The "Scare-Your-Pants-Off Club" books are the most popular children's books in the "Arthur" universe. They are based on the "Goosebumps" books, which were the most popular children's books in the world at the time. This episode is based on a real-life controversy where a group of parents tried to get the "Goosebumps" books banned. In this episode, Muffy's parents want these books banned because they think that these books gave her nightmares. In the episode, Muffy plans to host a party at Wonderworld (an amusement park) and she had invited all her friends to the party, but then she tells the kids that if they oppose her parents' book-banning, they are not allowed to come to the party. She calls the books "silly."

The other kids come up with different ways to get signatures for a petition to not ban the books. Arthur meets a gardener who does not sign the petition, but agrees to speak to Muffy's parents. When the kids show Mr. Crosswire the petition and all the signatures, he does not care. However, then the gardener shows up. It turns out that she is the author of the books and she was Mr. Crosswire's first grade English teacher. She tells him that he was never a good reader and he probably never read any of the book, and he admits that is true. Muffy then shows up, sees the gardener, and she is thrilled. She shows her whole collection of "Scare-Your-Pants-Off Club" books to her and wants her autograph. It turns out that her nightmares were not caused by the books, but they were caused by her father's ice cream. Mr. Crosswire cancels his plans to have the books banned and then he asks the gardener to read a few of them in the library. The episode ends with her reading her books to an audience of the Elwood City kids and their parents.
13. In "My Club Rules", whose club is the only successful one?

Answer: D.W.

This episode begins with Mr. Haney announcing to Mr. Ratburn's class that there will be a parade for the Strawberry festival. Mr. Haney and Mr. Ratburn tell the class about their own parade floats for themselves and they tell the class that they have three weeks to come up with their own floats and costumes. The kids have a meeting at the tree house to discuss this. D.W. wants to join, but she is not allowed to join because she is not in third grade. As the episode progresses, more and more of the kids leave this club and join other clubs. Then, the kids quit those clubs. In the end, each of Mr. Ratburn's kids has their own club and all the clubs have only one member. Eventually, D.W. sees that the tree house is abandoned, so she goes there and forms her own club there. Her club has only one rule, which is to ride her float in the parade.

At the parade, Mr. Haney's and Mr. Ratburn's floats have flaws which cause them to be miserable. D.W.'s float is a huge success. Muffy and Francine agree that D.W. is very smart and they wonder why Arthur was so desperate to exclude her from the parade float club. The episode ends with Arthur grumbling.
14. In "Arthur's First Sleepover", does he allow D.W. to join the sleepover?

Answer: Yes

Arthur, Buster, and Brain camp in a tent on the lawn of Arthur's parents' house. At first, D.W. is not invited. She gets her revenge by shining a flash light on the tent which the boys initially think is a light from a space ship. The boys then get a double dose of revenge. First, they make a fake alien and put it right outside of her bedroom door.

As she screams for her parents that an alien is out there, she takes a picture and discovers it was a hoax. As she goes outside to confront the boys, she sees what she thinks is a UFO and she takes a lot of pictures. Buster cuts one of the strings and it falls to the ground.

It's just a tin plate with some stuff attached to it. This makes the boys laugh. She admits that she was fooled. Feeling bad for her, Arthur invites her to the sleepover.

They play cards together, but then she quits and goes back in the house.
15. In "Arthur's New Year's Eve", did Arthur manage to stay up until midnight on New Year's Eve?

Answer: No

The episode begins with Arthur telling the audience about all his previous unsuccessful attempts to stay up until midnight on New Year's Eve. He then tells the audience this year that he does not plan to stay up at all, even though he has his parents' permission. Each of his friends tell him different things about what happens when the clock strikes midnight. That evening, Arthur's parents go out and Grandma Thora is in charge of the kids. She and Arthur play games together while D.W. keeps interrupting them. Eventually, Thora gives D.W. permission to stay up until New Year's with them. At 11:30 PM, Arthur falls asleep. Thora tries to wake him up at midnight but does not succeed.

When the clock strikes midnight, all that happens is that the clock's alarm goes off. D.W. is not happy that's all that happened. At 12:15 AM, Arthur wakes up. When he sees the clock, he is horrified. D.W. cheers up and tells him everything he missed. According to her, there were big explosions and giant mules jumping off cliffs into the ocean. This makes Arthur feel worse, but Thora cheers him up by telling him that as long as he remembers all the great things he did in the past year, he did not miss a thing and that's what New Year's Eve is really about. At the end of the episode, we see some flashback scenes from previous episodes of all the good times they had together. Some great, rarely-used music is played in the background during this scene.
