Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Princess of the Chalet School

Answer: Austria

'The Princess of the Chalet School' is the third book in the series, and the princess in question is Elisaveta, the princess of the fictional country of Belsornia (which is thought to be located somewhere in the Balkans). Elisaveta wants to live a normal life and despite being a princess, she fits in well with the other girls and even joins a secret society against the unpopular Matron Webb.

She is kidnapped by an evil relative who wants to claim the throne of Belsornia, but Joey Bettany rescues her using her Guide skills and becomes a national hero in Belsornia.
2. The Chalet School and the Island

Answer: Britain

'The Chalet School and the Island' is the 21st book in the series and features the school relocating to a house owned by the Christie family on the fictional island of St Briavels, off the Welsh coast. Plas Howell, where the school was originally based, has a problem with the drains, forcing the school to move.

The school is introduced to Kester Bellever, a naturalist and bird expert who lives on the island. Another notable character is Annis Lovell, a troubled pupil who runs away from school and has an accident with a boat that forces her to climb a cliff to safety.
3. A Future Chalet School Girl

Answer: Switzerland

'A Future Chalet School Girl' is the 47th book in the series and one of the holiday books. Mélanie Lucas is the girl in question, and spends time with the Maynard family when she leaves her old school and relocates to Switzerland, where she will be joining the Chalet School.

The Maynards acquire a minibus called Minnie after Jack is gifted a winning lottery ticket by a patient. Mélanie goes on holiday to the Tyrol with the Maynards and the Richardson siblings, and tension rises between her and Ruey Richardson, as Mélanie is jealous of her. Mélanie is also revealed to be the niece of an Old Girl, Jeanne le Cadoulec.
4. The New Chalet School

Answer: Austria

'The New Chalet School' is the thirteenth book in the series and the last book to be set entirely in Austria (the next book, 'The Chalet School in Exile', has the school relocating to Guernsey halfway through). St Scholastika's, the school that appeared in 'The Rivals of the Chalet School', has closed down due to its headmistress, Miss Brown, coming into money after a lawsuit and retiring. The two schools merge and two of the girls from St Scholastika's, Hilary Burn and Nancy Wilmot, later return to the Chalet School as teachers.

In the Armada version, the book was divided into 'The New Chalet School' (which features the Mystic M, a group of horrible children with a vendetta against Joey and Madge) and 'A United Chalet School' (where the girls go on an excursion and are forced to sleep on the bus due to bad weather).
5. Gay from China at the Chalet School

Answer: Britain

'Gay from China at the Chalet School' (or 'Gay Lambert at the Chalet School' if you have the Armada version) is the eighteenth book in the series and is set during the Second World War, when the school is in the fictional county of Armishire (based on Herefordshire). Gay Lambert befriends the shy Jacynth Hardy on the train and the two later bond over playing the cello. Several members of staff, including both headmistresses, are injured in a bus crash, and a temporary headmistress, Miss Bubb, takes over; she is unpopular with both girls and staff, and later causes Gay to run away from school when she forbids Gay from seeing her brother before he is stationed in China.
6. Two Sams at the Chalet School

Answer: Switzerland

'Two Sams at the Chalet School' is the 56th book in the series, and is one of the books where Len Maynard is Head Girl, following in her mother's footsteps. The two Sams are Samaris Davies, from Wales, and Samantha van der Byl, from the USA. Although the girls are not in the same year, they become friends and later discover that they are distantly related. Samantha has an accident while skiing, while Samaris later injures herself on a mountain. Samaris also learns to play the flute and entertains Phil Maynard, who is recovering from polio.
7. The Chalet School and the Lintons

Answer: Austria

'The Chalet School and the Lintons' is the tenth book in the series, and one of the books where Joey is Head Girl. Gillian Linton and her obnoxious younger sister Joyce relocate to Austria due to their mother's health issues, and while Gillian is conscientious, Joyce is in and out of trouble. Thekla von Stift tries to get Joyce expelled to get at Joey, and is subsequently the first pupil to be expelled from the school. The book also features the first themed Chalet School Sale, which is based on fairy tales, with Gillian as Snow White/Snowdrop and Joey as her prince.

In the Armada version, the book is split into 'The Chalet School and the Lintons' and 'A Rebel in the Chalet School'.
8. Bride Leads the Chalet School

Answer: Britain

'Bride Leads the Chalet School' is the 27th book in the series and is set on St Briavels. Bride Bettany becomes the new Head Girl after Loveday Perowne, her predecessor, goes to Argentina. A nearby school, Tanswick, has closed down and the Chalet School takes several of their pupils, including Diana Skelton, who causes no end of headaches for Bride and the prefects.

After Bride makes her apologise for rudeness in public, Diana vandalises Bride's study in revenge. The book also features a Sale of Learning based on ALOE's 'The Crown of Success'.
9. Challenge for the Chalet School

Answer: Switzerland

'Challenge for the Chalet School' is the 55th book in the series. Miss Annersley is invited to a conference and Miss Wilmot temporarily takes over as headmistress. Eustacia Benson, now Dr Benson, is invited back to teach after Miss Ferrars is ill with appendicitis.

The book features two new girls: Evelyn Ross, a Senior whose mother is seriously ill and a patient at the Sanatorium, and Jocelyn Marvell, a difficult Middle. Jocelyn runs away from school in a fit of temper and is rescued by Mary-Lou Trelawney, who is visiting at the time.
10. The Exploits of the Chalet Girls

Answer: Austria

'The Exploits of the Chalet Girls' is the ninth book in the series and features Thekla von Stift, Marie von Eschenau's cousin, who comes from an aristocratic background and is rude and snobby towards the other girls. She looks down on Sophie Hamel because her father is in trade and is shocked that Marie hangs out with the children of shopkeepers, and makes herself extremely unpopular. During a Halloween party, Thekla accidentally sets her petticoat on fire while jumping over candles. Joey rushes to put the fire out with water and gets soaked in the process.
11. Peggy of the Chalet School

Answer: Britain

'Peggy of the Chalet School' is the 22nd book in the series and is set on St Briavels. Peggy Bettany, Joey and Madge's niece, becomes the first second-generation Head Girl of the Chalet School. While accompanying new girls Polly and Lala Winterton to school, Peggy and her sisters accidentally get on the wrong train, and this causes her to be the subject of a whispering campaign by Eilunedd Vaughan, who is jealous that Peggy got to be Head Girl.

The Middles prank the prefects by speaking in Regency English, and the prefects get their own back by making them spend their weekend living the lives of Regency girls.
12. A Genius at the Chalet School

Answer: Switzerland

'A Genius at the Chalet School' is the 35th book in the series and stars Nina Rutherford, a teenage piano prodigy. Nina's parents are dead and she is being sent to the Chalet School so that she can focus on her piano playing while also studying other subjects and becoming more well-rounded.

Although Nina is obsessive about her piano playing, getting angry when she is unable to practice or when she injures her wrist in a games class, she does eventually make friends. Joey gives birth to her ninth child, a girl called Cecil, and Nina writes a song for her.
13. The New House at the Chalet School

Answer: Austria

'The New House at the Chalet School' is the eleventh book in the series and the last to feature Joey as Head Girl before she and her friends leave school. The school has a new house added, St Clare's, with Joey and the rest of the Quartette in charge. Of note, a group of Middles - led by Cornelia Flower and Evadne Lannis - form an orchestra and hold a concert, which goes down in school history for its sheer hilarity. Joey also has to deal with Matron Beasley, a new matron who takes a dislike to her and leaves after panicking during a thunderstorm.
14. Three Go to the Chalet School

Answer: Britain

'Three Go to the Chalet School' is the twentieth book in the series and is set in Armishire. The 'three' in question are Mary-Lou Trelawney, who becomes one of the main characters of the series; Verity-Ann Carey, an old-fashioned girl raised by her grandparents; and Clem Barrass, an older friend of Mary-Lou and an artist's daughter. Verity-Ann and Mary-Lou's fathers are on the same expedition, and while Verity-Ann's father survives - and later marries Mary-Lou's mother - Mr Trelawney does not. Verity-Ann also has a standoff with Mr Denny when she refuses to sing German carols, and is almost kicked out of the school carol concert because of it.
15. Prefects of the Chalet School

Answer: Switzerland

'Prefects of the Chalet School' is the 58th and final book in the series, and is set during the second half of the same term as 'Althea Joins the Chalet School'. It covers the Maynard triplets' final weeks at the school and the Sale, which is based around the four seasons. Jocelyn Marvell and her friends try to get the school to hire motorboats for the Regatta, but the Regatta itself is cancelled.

At the end of the book, Len becomes engaged to Reg Entwistle, a young doctor at the Sanatorium who first appeared as a teenager in 'Jo to the Rescue', while Margot announces that she wants to become a medical missionary with the Order of Blue Nuns.
