Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Adversity is a word which here means '_______,' and there are very few people in this world who have had the sort of troubling adversity that follows these three children wherever they go."

Answer: trouble

The Baudelaires have been pursued by the evil villain Count Olaf ever since their parents died and left them an enormous fortune. Count Olaf has tried to get his hands on the fortune by trying to marry Violet Baudelaire, by killing their Uncle Monty, by killing Josephine, and by hypnotizing Klaus. Adversity--in other words, Count Olaf--does follow the Baudelaires everywhere they go.
2. "As the children walked across the shack to sit glumly on one of the bales of hay, they were disappointed to learn that the crabs were territorial, a word which here means '_______.'"

Answer: unhappy to see small children in their living quarters

The Baudelaires are being forced to live in a shack--a cramped, tin shack with bales of hay for beds, small crabs for pets, and wet fungus for ceiling decorations. In spite of all this, the Baudelaires manage to look on the bright side of things.
Territorial, in other instances, can mean 'having to do with territory' or 'very closely attached to one's territory'.
3. "Ridiculous rules or not, the orphans did not want to be punished, so the three of them walked gingerly--the word 'gingerly' here means '_______'--across the shack and out onto the brown lawn."

Answer: avoiding territorial crabs

The rules of Prufrock Prep are very bizarre, but the Baudelaires decide to not argue with an impossible man, namely Vice Principal Nero.

Some synonyms for gingerly are cautiously, delicately, prudently, and carefully.
4. "If you went and stood beneath the arch, looking up at the black letters spelling out the name of the school and its austere--a word which here means '_______'--motto, you would here nothing but the SWISH of the breeze through the brown and patchy grass."

Answer: stern and severe

The motto of Prufrock Preparatory School is "Memento Mori" which translates to "Remember you will die". Austere indeed.

Some other synonyms for austere are somber, grave, strict, ascetic, and spartan.
5. "But Klaus was spending the morning on autopilot, a word which here means '_______.'"

Answer: measuring pencils without really thinking about them

Klaus's mind is on autopilot because he is trying to figure out what Count Olaf is up to this time. Violet and Sunny are in similar modes of thinking in English class and Vice Principal Nero's office, respectively.
6. "For the moment, Sunny was something of a fifth wheel, a phrase which means '_______,' but she crawled alongside her siblings, offering moral support."

Answer: not in a position to do anything particularly helpful

The infamous Count Olaf has fooled the adults once again, this time pretending to be the new gym coach, Coach Genghis. The Baudelaires realize who he is, but they don't let on. Olaf makes the Baudelaires draw a circle of paint in the grass and run around it throughout the night.

The phrase fifth wheel comes from the fact that a car runs on four wheels and if a fifth wheel was added, it would be unnecessary and even cumbersome.
7. "It was the next afternoon, and all three Baudelaire orphans were doing a great deal of wincing, a word which here means '_______.'"

Answer: frowning in pain, alarm, or distress

They were wincing because they were sore from running laps all last night. Count Olaf is forcing them to run, and the Baudelaires haven't been able to figure out what he is up to this time.

The word wince comes from the Middle English word 'wincen', which means 'to kick'. Some synonyms for wince are flinch, cringe, recoil, and grimace.
8. "She was alone on the veranda--the word 'veranda' is a fancy term for _______--and costumed as a dragonfly, with a glittering green mask and enormous silvery wings."

Answer: a porch made of polished gray marble

This is the part of the story when Lemony Snicket talks about his love, Beatrice. He has sneaked into a masked ball to give her a message he hasn't been able to give her for 15 years. But all he can say to her before he is spotted by the guards is "Beatrice, Count Olaf is--". How sad.

Of course a veranda doesn't have to be made of polished gray marble, but it was at the masked ball. But a veranda is a porch and can also be called a gallery or patio. A roofed veranda is called a lanai, and it is often used as an extra living room.
9. "Violet tried to remember each detail Klaus had taught her, Klaus tried to remember every measurement he had taught himself, and Sunny stapled like mad, a phrase which here means '_______.'"

Answer: quickly and accurately

Even Violet and Klaus had studied like mad. Count Olaf had made them run laps so that they would neglect their studies, fail, and be expelled from the school. Then he could easily get his hands on them and their fortune as well.
10. "'These orphans you foisted on me,' Nero said, using a nasty word for '_______,' 'have proven to be terrible cheaters, and I'm forced to expel them.'"

Answer: gave [to]

Vice Principal Nero calls the Baudelaires cheaters because they skipped gym class to study for the comprehensive exams that only they had to take. The Quagmires went to gym class for them, but they were caught by Count Olaf, pretending to be the gym teacher.

Some synonyms for the word foist are impose and force.

Well that's my quiz. All word origins and synonyms came from answers.com and WordWeb.com. Please rate this quiz on your way out!
