Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

Azure gets its name from lapis lazuli, a blue stone. It is between cyan and blue on the colour wheel and is the colour of the sky on a clear day. Several birds with plumage of this colour have 'azure' in their name, such as the azure tit and the azure-winged magpie.

Cerulean is between blue and teal and has hints of green, and if you've seen 'The Devil Wears Prada', you might remember Miranda Priestley giving a speech about the colour. Cerulean blue is a type of pigment made from cobalt stannate, and was created by the chemist Albrecht Höpfner; it was originally named Höpfner blue after him. The Crayola crayon variant is a brighter shade of blue closer to turquoise.

Delft is a very dark shade of blue named for the Dutch city of Delft, famous for producing blue and white ceramics (although Delft pottery can come in other colours).

Egyptian blue is a pigment that was originally used in ancient Egypt and is considered to be the first synthetic pigment. It is also known as calcium copper silicate and is created from silica, copper, lime and an alkali. It was used in the production of objects such as statuettes and pots, and also used to colour various materials.

Indigo is a deep shade of blue named for a type of dye exported from India. According to Isaac Newton, it is one of the seven colours of the rainbow (think 'ROYGBIV'). Indigo dye was obtained from various plants, such as woad in Europe and true indigo in West Africa.

International Klein Blue is a type of dark blue mixed by the French artist Yves Klein and developed in collaboration with Paris paint supplier Edward Adam. The Manic Street Preachers song 'International Blue' is named after the colour; there is also an Australian rock band called Yves Klein Blue.

Navy blue is a dark shade of blue that gets its name from the uniforms worn by the British Royal Navy. It was originally known as marine blue. The US navy blue is darker than the British one, while the Crayola colour is lighter. It is a popular colour for school uniforms (in fact, navy blue was one of my school colours - girls had to wear navy blue trousers or skirts) and British football teams such as Everton and Leicester City.

Periwinkle is in the violet family and is a light bluish purple shade, named after the flower in the dogbane family. Periwinkle is associated with friendship, womanhood, but on a grimmer note, periwinkle ribbons are also awareness symbols for oesophageal and stomach cancer, and anorexia nervosa.

Sapphire is a deep shade of blue named after the corundum stone; although most sapphires are blue, they can come in other colours. Padparadscha, for example, is a rare variant with a pinkish orange colour. As well as jewellery, sapphires are also used for watch crystals and high-durability windows.

Uranian blue is a light blue shade named for the planet Uranus, which appears to be a bluish-green colour when seen in the night sky.

(Carmine is a shade of red, amber and gamboge are shades of yellow, and jade and kelly are shades of green.)
