Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. [Humanities] What alternative adjective might one use to describe a movie that has been referred to, idiomatically, as 'blue'?

Answer: Pornographic

The idiom 'blue movie' is indeed used when referring to a movie that is pornographic in nature. Although plenty of theories exist regarding its origin, according to "The Oxford English Dictionary", the first confirmed example of this usage was in 1818's "The Adventures of Johnny Newcome in the Navy", a poem written by John Mitford under the pseudonym Alfred Burton. The words "Blush, Pluto! Blush as brimstone blue! This bluer Town can boast like you a 'facilis descensus' too" certainly does seem to point to "brimstone blue" as a reference to sin.

However, it should also be pointed out that the cheap film used to shoot early, so-called X-rated movies had a tendency to make them look bluish in colour, which may also have led to the perpetuation of this idiom.
2. [Television] Which actress, who starred in "10 Things I Hate About You" and "Save the Last Dance" played the title character, Blue, in the online drama series of the same name?

Answer: Julia Stiles

Julia Stiles is the actress who has played Blue, the mother with a secret life as a call girl, in the online drama series (later shown on television) of the same name. Premiering online on the YouTube channel WIGS in June 2012, "Blue" is written and directed by Colombian director Rodrigo Garcia, who also wrote and directed the 2009 film "Mother and Child", starring Naomi Watts and Samuel L. Jackson.
3. [Music] What adjective, synonymous with honesty and correctness, when combined with the colour blue makes up the title of a 1986 album and single by Madonna?

Answer: True

"True Blue" was both a single and an album by American singer Madonna. The album was the first to be, released in June, 1986, with the single making its debut in September of the same year. The third album to be released by the songstress, "True Blue", contained a whole host of iconic songs, including "La Isla Bonita", "Papa Don't Preach" and "Open Your Heart".

As for the title itself, it was inspired by Madonna's then-husband, Sean Penn, who reportedly used the expression frequently.
4. [For Children] Which prolific children's author is responsible for the creation of Noddy, a little wooden doll who wears (among other things) a pair of blue shorts and a little blue hat?

Answer: Enid Blyton

The books of English children's author Enid Blyton are among the best-selling stories of all time, and have been translated into many different languages. Born in 1897, Enid Blyton was the eldest of three children, and initially only wrote in her spare time, having chosen a career as a teacher.

As for the character of Noddy, his first appearance was in 1949, with the children's book "Noddy Goes to Toyland", which established him as a newcomer to Toyland. Originally made by a woodcarver in a toy shop, Noddy subsequently escaped, after being frightened by another wood carving - of a lion.
5. [World] 'Glas', 'azul', 'bleu' and 'blauw' all mean 'blue' in different languages. But which one of these options is taken from the Welsh language?

Answer: Glas

'Glas' is indeed the Welsh word for 'blue, while 'blauw' is Dutch, 'azul' is Spanish and 'bleu' is French. Over the years the number of people in Wales speaking Welsh has fluctuated, but these numbers were certainly boosted in 1999, when Welsh became a compulsory subject for all Key Stage 4 pupils in Wales.
6. [Movies] Which renowned Canadian director, who first cut his directing teeth with 1978's "Xenogenesis", was responsible not only for directing, but also writing, producing and co-editing the ground-breaking 2009 movie "Avatar"?

Answer: James Cameron

James Cameron's name is a much respected one in the movie industry, and he has many blockbusters under his belt, including "The Terminator", "Aliens" and "Titanic". Born in Ontario, Canada in 1954, he first experienced major success in 1984 with "The Terminator", starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Though "Avatar" was not released until 2009, Cameron had in fact been working on the project since 1995, but was forced to wait until the technology he needed to film it had been created.
7. [Hobbies] Cerulean, periwinkle and cornflower are all shades of blue popularised by which global brand?

Answer: Crayola

Crayola crayons first appeared in 1903, thanks to the entrepreneurial flair of cousins C. Harold Smith and Edwin Binney. Capitalising on the need for affordable colouring materials, the pair's very first box of crayons contained only eight colours: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet, brown and black.

However things went from strength to strength from there, and over time hundreds of different colours were created, including the three shades of blue mentioned in the question.
8. [Celebrities] Which mononymous superstar, who was once a member of the girl band Destiny's Child, named her first child Blue Ivy Carter?

Answer: Beyoncé

Since leaving successful girl band Destiny's Child, Beyoncé (born Beyoncé Giselle Knowles) has gone from strength to strength, and in 2014 was named the top-earning woman in music by "Forbes" magazine. She married fellow musician Jay Z in 2008, and in early 2012 she gave birth to her first child, Blue Ivy Carter.
9. [Literature] Which dystopian novella written by George Orwell is also an allegory of the Russian Revolution, and includes a character called Bluebell?

Answer: Animal Farm

George Orwell's 1945 novella "Animal Farm" is a wealth of criticism of the Russian government and the Russian Revolution, which is only partially subverted by its seemingly innocent characters, which are all farm animals. During the novella we come across a dog named Bluebell, who despite not being a central character has a considerable effect on the plot, as she is the mother of the puppies that eventually become Napoleon's bodyguards.
10. [Entertainment] What durable, traditionally indigo-coloured item of clothing has celebrated fashion designer Yves Saint-Laurent referred to as "expressive and discreet" with both "sex appeal and simplicity"?

Answer: Jeans

In "The Fashion Book: Levi Strauss Designer", Yves Saint-Laurent is quoted as saying that jeans are "expressive and discreet, they have sex appeal and simplicity, everything I could want for the clothes I design". First invented in the latter half of the nineteenth-century by German-American Levi Strauss, jeans have long been a wardrobe staple.

This is particularly true for labouring men, such as those who were involved in the Californian Gold Rush of the 1850s, and the very men jeans were created for.
