Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the state flower of Texas, and can be seen growing wild in huge fields in many parts of the state?

Answer: Bluebonnet

The colorful bluebonnet was designated the state flower of Texas in 1971. Some species of bluebonnet grow only in Texas and nowhere else. The main pollinator of bluebonnets are bees, and when the number of bees plummet, so does the amount of bluebells growing wild. This flower's association with Texas is so great that it's scientific name is Lupinus texensis!
2. In religious paintings, the Madonna is always depicted wearing blue because the word "blue" means "Mother of God" in Hebrew.

Answer: False

This whole statement is completely false. Although this religious figure is often depicted wearing a blue mantle, scholars state that this is because in the past, many religious paintings used the color blue as it was thought to symbolize heavenly grace, peace, and purity.

It should be noted at various times, the Madonna was depicted in both a red or white mantle. In reality, in first century Galilee, Mary's clothing would probably not have had much color, as dye (especially blue and purple) was reserved for the rich and powerful, because only they could afford them.

Her mantle would most likely have been a natural flaxen color. It is believed by many linguists that the word "blue" is of Proto-Indo-European language and meant "light-colored".
3. Which of the following gemstones is almost always blue?

Answer: Azurite

Azurite has been used for centuries in the creation of jewelry, cosmetics, and ornamental objects. At one time it was thought to be a birthstone for the sign of Taurus. The ancients Egyptians thought that azurite helped a person to communicate with spirits and increased psychic awareness.

It has a hardness of between 3-4 on the Moh's hardness scale. Azurite can be found in many locations around the world, including Australia, Zaire, Chile, and France, just to name a few.
4. Which of the following men wrote the rock and roll classic "Blue Suede Shoes"?

Answer: Carl Perkins

First released in 1955, "Blue Suede Shoes" was a hit for its author and singer Carl Perkins. It was not until Elvis Presley performed it on national television three times in 1956 that it cemented its place as one of the greatest hits of early rock and roll. This song was subsequently performed by Bill Haley and His Comets, The Beatles, and Black Sabbath among others.
5. What is meant by the phrase "once in a blue moon"?

Answer: Very rarely

Simply put, a blue moon is the second full moon in a calendar month. A blue moon occurs every three to four years. Because it occurs so rarely, the phrase "once in a blue moon" is used to convey the idea that something rarely happens. A blue moon is not, in fact, blue in color. Occasionally, the moon will appear blue due to atmospheric conditions caused by such things as volcanic eruptions.
6. The 1972 film "Lady Sings the Blues" is a biographical drama based on which singer?

Answer: Billie Holiday

"Lady Sings the Blues" featured singing legend Diana Ross in the role of Billie Holiday. The movie was based on Holiday's autobiography of the same name. Holiday was one of the female pioneers of blues music and her life was sadly mirrored in much of her music.
7. Which of the following Hindu gods is often depicted as having blue skin?

Answer: Krishna

One theory of why Krishna has blue skin is the idea that blue is a powerful color that the Creator has given to the sky, rivers, and lakes. Because Krishna has courage, manliness, depth of character and other desirable qualities, this leaves him deserving to be colored blue. As Krishna spends his life protecting humanity and destroying evil, he has earned the right to be colored blue.
8. The rock formation known as "The Three Sisters" can be found in the lovely Blue Mountain Range in which of the following locations?

Answer: Australia

Formed by land erosion, The Three Sisters are a sandstone rock formation that are part of the picturesque Blue Mountain Range of New South Wales, Australia. The surrounding areas have been incorporated into the Greater Blue Mountains Area World Heritage Site, which consists of a conservation reserve and seven national parks. For centuries, the Blue Mountains have provided a home to the Aboriginal tribe known as the Gundungurra.

This is a must see location on your next trip to New South Wales.
9. Because of its name, many people might expect which plankton-eating fish to be orange in color?

Answer: Blue Tang

The brightly colored blue tang makes its home in tropical waters and have a compressed spine at the base of their tails and sharp caudal spines. These spines make it difficult for larger predators to eat them. Juveniles are yellow in color, before turning the lovely blue color seen in adulthood.

These are herbivorous fish that usually dine on algae and plankton. They can be found in large groups numbering in the hundreds or swimming by themselves while they eat. In many countries, the word tang reminds people of a powdered orange drink that became popular when it was advertised as being invented for astronauts to drink.
10. Which one of these famous painters produced numerous paintings during his "Blue Period"?

Answer: Pablo Picasso

Pablo Picasso's "Blue Period" refers to a series of paintings produced between 1901 and 1904. The color blue dominates many of these paintings, even though many of the paintings are done in a variety of styles using a variety of topics. It is often looked at as a transition period where the painter switched from classicism to the abstract art for which he is so well known.

It is thought by many art scholars to mirror a period of depression and personal struggle for the artist.
