Answer: The Substance

Releasing to quite significant renown in 2024, Coralie Fargeat's "The Substance" was a stylish, Cronenbergian body horror title that featured Demi Moore as TV fitness performer Elisabeth Sparkle. The catch was, as a fading and aging celebrity, her star power was on the wane, so she would end up committing to a mysterious miracle drug, known as 'The Substance', which would inadvertently split her into two people-- one with all the looks and agelessness and another continuing to deteriorate. The only rule: they needed to respect the balance. And this would involve swapping to live their one life every seven days.

"The Substance" was extremely well-received upon its release with Demi Moore receiving particular accolades. The movie would become nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, best Director, and Best Actress (though all of them would lose to "Anora").

Answer: Taijitu

The idea of the 'Taijitu' refers to a sense or state of the universe and has been seen in different ways and forms across history. Most commonly, it's a way to refer to the idea of the yin-and-yang, a sense that the universe is formed through opposing dualities like good and evil or light and dark, always acting in balance.

The catch is that a balance of two things can often be seen as a singular whole, which is why some philosophies have also depicted the taijitu as a singular item, like the 'Wuji', which is often seen as a circle without dual natures.

After all, the yin-and-yang is also just a circle, really. The point behind the wuji is to depict the universe as singular and infinite.

Answer: Spice Girls

The third single from the Spice Girls' debut album, "Spice", "2 Become 1" was a down-tempo ballad that toned down the infectious, upbeat energy brought on by "Wannabe" and "Say You'll Be There", both of which were massive breakout hits for the fivesome. In the UK, the song would hit number one on the UK Singles Chart (becoming a Christmas single); in the U.S. it reached number four on the Billboard Hot 100.

Famously, the chorus goes:

Answer: Tanzania

The United Republic of Tanzania was brought together and amalgamated in 1964 when the Articles of Union were drafted up and subsequently made into a foundational document for the inevitable Constitution of Tanzania. It essentially brought together the short-lived mainland region of Tanganyika, formerly under British colonial rule, and the island of Zanzibar which, at the time, was only half a year old.

Interestingly, it was a busy time for nation-building in the middle of the 20th century. A year before, Malaysia would reform as a nation, bringing in several outlying crown colonies. Less than a decade after, the United Arab Emirates would form in earnest.

Answer: Megazord

When the "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" TV show released in North America in 1993, the plot behind its first season started slow, introducing all of the Rangers to their powers in individual episodes while bringing forth the Zords, mech-creatures built to represent their dinosaurs of choice. Not only could each of these come in to fight foes, but they could combine together to form a hefty, single unit, known as the Megazord, which used all of their powers with a central control hub to take on the biggest enemies. When Tommy, the Green Ranger, was introduced, his Zord formed a sword.

The Megazord transformed its individual parts from dinosaurs into animals after the release of "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie" (1995), and they were transformed again, very soon after, into Super Zeo Zords for "Power Rangers Zeo's" fifty episode run.

Answer: The male anglerfish fuses onto the female

A rarity in the natural world, anglerfish engage in parabiosis partly because they rarely encounter one another. When a male anglerfish finds a female, it will latch on with its mouth and fuse to the larger fish, creating a parasitic outcropping that effectively allows the two fish to become one. The eggs of the anglerfish are fertilized through this method and subsequently spread over long distances underwater (generally in the deep sea).

If anglerfish do not fuse together, their bodies won't mature properly and will die out before laying eggs, a consequence of their parasitic relationship not kickstarting key biological processes.

Answer: Seinfeld

Featured in the season 5 episode of "Seinfeld" entitled "The Dinner Party", Jerry's musing on the black-and-white cookie first aired in 1994 and makes up a small part of a larger story in which the four main characters prepare to go to a dinner party but get stopped at every opportunity as they try to collect the gifts they're planning to bring. While Elaine tries to get her hands on a chocolate babka, Kramer and George struggle with picking up wine.

Jerry ends up having and enjoying the cookie, but when the two halves seemingly don't get along, he ends up throwing it up. None of them stay for the party.

Answer: Dragon Ball Z

It happens a lot as the series goes on. While the original "Dragon Ball" simply had its characters raise their capabilities through training and other supernatural means, "Dragon Ball Z" added in the concepts of power levels and fusion combining two already over-strong characters together to make them even more super-powerful. Goten and Trunks combined into Gotenks, for instance, through the Fusion Dance, a technique learned from an alien race in order to protect the world from Majin Buu.

Other characters combined through Potara Fusion and an even more complex EX-Fusion. Goku has his own, additional methods of fusion beyond this, and those involve many, many more people.

Answer: The 1980s

Held on May 25, 1986, Hands Across America brought people together across the Continental United States for a good cause. Devised by Ken Kragen, who is also known for backing the "We Are the World" charity track, the goal was to create an unbroken line of American citizens crossing from one ocean to the other. Naturally, this wasn't 100% possible; there were numerous breaks in the chain across different regions. This said, the attendance was high enough that the chain theoretically could have made the full span.

Though the event only made $15,000,000 USD for its cause when factoring in the $15,000,000-$20,000,000 operating costs (much lower than anticipated), it was nonetheless a landmark moment in U.S. history.

Answer: Together

After Tim and Millie moved out into the country and took a hiking trip into the woods near their new home, the couple found their way, unexpectedly, into a cave that they couldn't get out of, trapped in the middle of a torrential rainstorm. Tim was the one to drink the water in the puddle in the cave, and that was the start of the pair's heightened physical attraction; by this, they developed a supernatural magnetism to one another resulting in their unstoppable physical fusion.

Releasing at Sundance, "Together" proved to be popular with horror aficionados, receiving positive reviews and a modest box office return as far as independent films go. Franco and Brie, married in real life, also produced the movie. Franco had, earlier, directed Brie in the 2020 film "The Rental".
