Question 1 of 10
1. Our criminal has left a very clear trail of footprints running away from the scene of the crime. Footprints can provide big clues to forensic scientists!

What standard percentage is used to calculate a criminal's stature based on their footprint size?
Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. We've got an idea of who we're looking for, but our fugitive has found a main road and tried to bury himself in the crowd. We need some help from a true expert in footprints. I know just the person! He's solved cases based on footprints, bicycle tracks, and even hoof prints - remember the case of "Silver Blaze"?

Can you help me remember his name so we can call him?
Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. Excellent work! We have tracked our criminal to a major tourist destination - Grauman's Chinese Theatre. Our agent in Los Angeles sent us a coded note saying that he's found a clue next to the first official set of footprints ever placed in concrete in the famous forecourt of the theatre.

Whose footprints are we looking for?
Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. Oh no! Our criminal has given us the slip! But he's left a note for us - "See you on the moon, gumshoes!" Could our man have headed into outer space? The computer back at headquarters tells us: "The photo of a footprint on the surface of the moon is one of the most famous images of recent history."

Whose footprint was photographed on the face of the moon?
Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. Hmm, maybe our criminal didn't mean the moon in a literal sense. Maybe he's talking about a different kind of moonwalk. Let's head for the music video archives. I seem to recall that one of Michael Jackson's classic videos spent a lot of time focusing on feet and footprints. Can you remember which one I'm talking about? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. Ah ha! Here's our next clue, in the Sony vaults. I see that our criminal has left his shoes at the door and tiptoed into the vault to steal some master recordings! He's left some very clear toe prints on the floor. Maybe this can help us figure out who this crazy thief is!

We know that fingerprints are unique to every person, but are toe prints also unique?

Question 7 of 10
7. OK, we've sent all our information back to headquarters and we have some results. Our criminal is most likely Flat Foot Freddy, who has a base of operations in Miami, Florida. We've got to go after him, but we're a long way away! We'll have to be careful to choose a method of travel that doesn't waste too much fuel.

Which "footprint" term are we worried about here?
Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. We're on a hot trail now! We've tracked Flat Foot Freddy down to a beach in Florida. Look, there's his trail running off into the distance. You know, this view reminds me of my mother's favorite poem, "Footprints in the Sand."

Who wrote that poem?
Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. We've found Flat Foot Freddy's hideout here in Miami, but it seems he's flown the coop one more time. He's left us a self-destructing message, though. "Close but no cigar, gumshoes! I'm long gone with the goods. Go gab with a guru and maybe you'll grab me at the site of the holiest footprint in the world."

I've heard of that footprint. It's on top of a very tall mountain called "Adam's Peak." Can you remember which country it's in?
Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. You've done it! We have found Flat Foot Freddy and have cornered him in the monastery with his ill-gotten loot. I'll cuff him while you phone up headquarters.

It seems he stole the original masters for the best-known recording of the jazz classic "Footprints," composed by Wayne Shorter. Which jazz artist made this song famous?
Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Our criminal has left a very clear trail of footprints running away from the scene of the crime. Footprints can provide big clues to forensic scientists! What standard percentage is used to calculate a criminal's stature based on their footprint size?

Answer: Footprint length is 15% of height

This calculation obviously does not work too well for children, whose feet can grow at a different pace from the rest of their body. It also doesn't work well for killer clowns, so we've got yet another reason to be scared of them.

Answer: Sherlock Holmes

Excellent, thank you! Sherlock Holmes is the man we want. To see Holmes at his print-tracking best, try "The Adventure of the Beryl Coronet," where he uses them to prove a young man's innocence, or perhaps "A Study in Scarlet," where he uses tire tracks, hoof prints AND footprints to prove guilt.

Answer: Mary Pickford

The first unofficial footprints were left by silent movie star Norma Talmadge, who accidentally stepped in the wet concrete when she came to visit Sid Grauman during the building's construction. Her accident gave Grauman the idea to commemorate celebrities with footprint ceremonies.

However, as silent film stars Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks were shareholders in the theatre, they left the first official footprints.

Sure enough, I've found a note here next to Mary Pickford's footprints! We're on the right track!
4. Oh no! Our criminal has given us the slip! But he's left a note for us - "See you on the moon, gumshoes!" Could our man have headed into outer space? The computer back at headquarters tells us: "The photo of a footprint on the surface of the moon is one of the most famous images of recent history." Whose footprint was photographed on the face of the moon?

Answer: Buzz Aldrin

The astronauts from the Apollo 11 mission were on the moon for quite some time. They actually spent seven hours asleep after their moonwalk was finished. Personally if I were the first person to ever visit the moon there's no way you could get me to sleep!

Buzz Aldrin was so devoted to his faith that he quietly took communion after landing on the moon. I don't think he's our criminal.

Answer: Billie Jean

"Billie Jean" was the first video by a black artist shown on MTV. It spends quite a bit of time on shots of feet and of the sidewalk. Who can forget the squares of pavement that light up underneath Michael's feet as he dances down the road?

Answer: Yes

Toe prints are just as unique as fingerprints. They are admissible in court and have also been used to identify remains of victims. The sole of your foot also has a unique print, as does your palm. All of these surfaces have unique patterns of ridges called "friction gyri."

Answer: Carbon footprint

A carbon footprint is a calculation of exactly how many tons of carbon dioxide and other pollutants are released into the atmosphere as a result of our daily activities. Carbon dioxide contributes to the greenhouse effect and worsens global warming. By reducing energy usage, you reduce your carbon footprint and minimize the damage you cause to the planet's atmosphere.
8. We're on a hot trail now! We've tracked Flat Foot Freddy down to a beach in Florida. Look, there's his trail running off into the distance. You know, this view reminds me of my mother's favorite poem, "Footprints in the Sand." Who wrote that poem?

Answer: The author is unknown

At least seven people have stepped up as the original author of "Footprints in the Sand." A lawsuit was filed in New York State in 2008 to determine which, if any, of these authors has a right to the royalties from the numerous reprints of the work. All three of the authors named as answers to the question are parties in the lawsuit.
9. We've found Flat Foot Freddy's hideout here in Miami, but it seems he's flown the coop one more time. He's left us a self-destructing message, though. "Close but no cigar, gumshoes! I'm long gone with the goods. Go gab with a guru and maybe you'll grab me at the site of the holiest footprint in the world." I've heard of that footprint. It's on top of a very tall mountain called "Adam's Peak." Can you remember which country it's in?

Answer: Sri Lanka

The holy footprint enshrined at the top of Sri Pada, or Adam's Peak, is claimed by various religions to be the footprint of either Adam, Buddha or Shiva. The stairwell from the ground up to the top of the mountain is thousands of steps long, and takes hours to climb.

It is a custom when climbing the mountain that you do not ask of other pilgrims how much further you have to go before reaching the top.

Answer: Miles Davis

The Miles Davis Quintet's recording of "Footprints" is an iconic example of 1960's jazz. It was originally composed by Wayne Shorter for his album "Adam's Apple," but the best known recording is from Davis' "Miles Smiles," released in 1966.
