Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What shape are the cells of a honeycomb?

Answer: Hexagonal

Hexagons occur in many aspects of nature. As well as in the honeycomb, they appear in basalt columns and the eyes of insects. This may be because hexagons are very efficient in filling spaces by tiling. Even soap bubbles floating in water often form hexagons - try looking when you have a bath!
2. Which lawman was played by Robert Stack in a television series between 1959 and 1963 and by Kevin Costner in a film of 1987?

Answer: Eliot Ness

Both the film and the television series had the title "The Untouchables". A further television series was made in 1993 but it did not have the impact of the earlier productions. Kojak, Columbo and McCloud were played on television by Telly Savalas, Peter Falk and Dennis Weaver.
3. In 1887 the Polish ophthalmologist L.L. Zamenhof published a book outlining a language he had invented to promote international understanding. What was the language called?

Answer: Esperanto

Esperanto means someone who hopes. Esparto is not a language but a type of grass. Espartaco is the Spanish version of the name Spartacus, played by Kirk Douglas in the film of 1960, and espada is both a type of sword and the name of a Lamborghini car.
4. Which region of France, that historically contained the Channel Islands, became a duchy in 911 AD when the French king Charles the Simple granted it to the Viking leader Rollo?

Answer: Normandy

Rollo was granted these lands after his unsuccessful siege of Chartres, which led the French king to regard him as a potential ally if he could negotiate with him. He had an even more famous descendant, as he was the great-great-great grandfather of William the Conqueror.
5. Which book by Charles Dickens was subtitled "The Parish Boy's Progress"?

Answer: Oliver Twist

The subtitle comes from the fact that Oliver was born in a workhouse. The book tells of his adventures when he escapes from being an apprentice in an undertaker's shop, runs away to London and becomes embroiled with a gang of child thieves. Eventually Oliver is adopted by a kind gentleman, Mr. Brownlow. The book is famous for its depiction of the squalid life of lower class people in London.

The other books named are all also by Dickens.
6. What is the name of the fluid that surrounds and protects a baby growing in the uterus.

Answer: Amniotic fluid

The amniotic fluid not only protects the growing baby but helps in the exchange of nutrients and other vital chemicals between mother and child. The other options are all bodily fluids but have nothing to do with pregnancy.
7. Who played the role of the eccentric millionaire Howard Hughes in the 2004 film "The Aviator"?

Answer: Leonardo di Caprio

Leonardo di Caprio received an Academy Award nomination for his performance. Alec Baldwin was also in the film, playing Juan Trippe, the founder of Pan American World Airways, but neither of the other options had a role in the film.
8. The name of which New York borough can be linked in different contexts with the words cocktail, project and transfer?

Answer: Manhattan

The cocktail is made with (usually rye) whiskey, vermouth and bitters. The Manhattan Project was the name of the research project that eventually produced the atomic bomb and Manhattan Transfer is a stylish vocal group formed originally in 1969 and still performing in 2022.
9. Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, is the largest city on the shores of which sea?

Answer: Caspian Sea

At twenty eight metres below sea level, Baku is the lowest lying capital city in the world. Between 1920 and 1991 Azerbaijan was part of the Soviet Union and was the most important oil producer in the USSR.
10. Now make an anagram from the initial letters of the first words in each of the previous nine answers, to find the name of a reptile.

Answer: Chameleon

As lizards, chameleons are members of the reptile class of creatures. The name being derived from Greek words meaning "earth lion", chameleons live mostly in Africa. They have zygodactyl feet, meaning they have four toes with two pointing forward and two back.

But their most famous attribute is the ability to change colour to harmonise with their surroundings and make it difficult for predators to see them.
