Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. SPORT: Which of these is NOT a professional sports team based in or associated with San Francisco, California?

Answer: Rams

The Rams are a National Football League (NFL) franchise based in Los Angeles, California. The "football" here is of course U.S. football, not what people in the U.S. call "soccer." The 49ers also play in the NFL as the San Francisco 49ers. For most of their storied, five-Super Bowl-winning history they were physically located in San Francisco. Now they play their games a bit south of the city in Santa Clara.

The San Francisco Giants are a Major League Baseball franchise that moved to San Francisco from New York City in 1958. They have won eight World Series titles. The Golden State Warriors are a professional basketball team playing in the National Basketball Association (NBA). They have won the NBA championship seven times in their history (two of the seven coming when they were the Philadelphia Warriors, before they moved in 1962),
2. LITERATURE: Which author wrote "Murder at Heartbreak Hospital" in 1993?

Answer: Henry Slesar

Henry Slesar is mostly known for his works in mystery writing as well as a long and successful stint as a writer for "The Edge of Night" and other soap operas. In fact, "Murder at Heartbreak Hospital" is centered around a fictional soap opera. Slesar was known for intricate story lines and unexpected plot twists.

Stephen King is of course the widely known and prolific author of more than 60 novels, primarily in the horror genre. Robert Swindells is a British author of children's and young adult fiction, and the winner of four Red House Awards (in that genre). Richard Matheson, an American author, also writes in the horror and science fiction genres and is most well known for writing "I am Legend."
3. ENTERTAINMENT: Complete the title of a well-known comic-strip: "Hagar the ___"

Answer: Horrible

"Hagar the Horrible" is a popular comic strip, created in 1973 by Dik Browne. After his death in 1989 his sons continued producing the strip, renaming it "Dik Browne's Hagar the Horrible." The strip uses Middle Ages Viking characters to poke fun at modern day problems.

"Hoffmeister" (or "Hofmeister") is a German surname that has origins in the term for an estate or manor chamberlain, but it's also a nickname for David Hasselhoff (of "Baywatch" fame). He is also called "the Hoff." Hungry Hippo is a shortened form of "Hungry Hungry Hippos", a children's game.
4. LITERATURE/CELEBRITIES: Which singer wrote the 2001 autobiography "Learning To Fly"?

Answer: Victoria Beckham

Victoria Beckham became famous as a member of the musical group the Spice Girls from 1994 to 200 and then again from 2007 to 2012. She was known as Posh Spice (each member had a nickname). Apart from her singing career and especially following it she became a leading figure in the fashion and beauty worlds, first as a model and then with her own line of clothing and beauty accessories. In 1999 she married David Beckham, a world-renowned association football star.

Cher, Britney Spears, and Pink are also singers.
5. VIDEO GAMES: In the "Super Mario" series, Wario is the bad version of Mario. Who is the bad version of Luigi?

Answer: Waluigi

Waluigi is of course the enemy of Luigi, and often teams with Wario to serve as villains in the "Mario" franchise. He first appeared in "Mario Tennis 64" and has appeared in several other games, including "Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour" and "Mario Party 3." He appears in green overalls, a purple shirt, and hat with an upside down "L" on it.
6. TELEVISION: In "The Simpsons", what was the name of the elephant Bart got in "Bart Gets An Elephant"?

Answer: Stampy

Bart won Stampy, an African elephant, in a radio show contest, but the Simpson family soon realized an elephant couldn't live with them in their house. Stampy made a mess of a lot of Springfield when he went on a rampage. They decided to donate Stampy to a nature reserve. He only appeared in one episode, season 5, episode 17, of "The Simpsons," which aired in 1994.
7. Nature: What name is given to a female fox?

Answer: Vixen

The most common use of "vixen" may be as the term for a female fox, but it is also widely used in many areas of life. Etymologically the word also means a woman with a temper or who is argumentative or, often, refers to a sexually active and attractive woman. The word has also found its way into everyday life as titles of video games, movies, novels, bands, songs, and albums. It seems to also be used by the military, particularly in Great Britain, with a mid-20th Century fighter plane named Sea Vixen, several naval vessels, and several nuclear tests.

Incidentally, a male fox is called a dog, or sometimes a tod. Babies are pups or cubs.
8. MUSIC: Kylie Minogue and Robbie Williams joined together to make a song. What was this song called?

Answer: Kids

The song "Kids" was written after a request from Minogue to Williams to write songs for her. His response was to write "Kids" as a duet for them to perform. It was released as a single from Minogue's album "Light Years" and from Williams' "Sing When You're Winning" album. Guy Chambers, a Williams collaborator, received co-writing credit.

The song was a chart hit, reaching number two in the United Kingdom and doing quite well in several other countries. Interestingly, the music video for the song has multiple references to the musical "Grease."
9. BOARD GAMES: In Chess, what can a King do?

Answer: Move one space in any direction and take any piece but the opposing King

While not the most versatile mover in chess, the king is certainly the most critical since the object of the game is to put the opponent's king into checkmate (where the opponent's king cannot make any move that takes it out of danger of capture). In addition to being able to move in any direction one space at a time the king may also perform an operation called "castling." Castling may be done under certain rigid conditions and involves the king taking the place of a rook that is two spaces to its left or right and the rook moving into the open space that was between them.
10. MOVIES: In "Charlie's Angels II: Full Throttle," who DOESN'T make a cameo?

Answer: Danica Patrick

Danica Patrick is a former motor racing driver, the most successful woman in open wheel racing. She also had a moderately successful career in NASCAR. She is also a media personality, e.g. appearing as an on-air commentator in SkySports' Formula 1 coverage.

Jaclyn Smith is the only original "Charlie's Angels" actress to have a cameo in the film. Bruce Willis is a well known actor, the star of the "Die Hard" movies. Mary-Kate Olsen is a movie and television actress, originally best known for her role as Michelle Tanner (along with her twin sister Ashley) on the TV series "Full House." She and her sister have appeared in numerous films and shows but moved on to focus on a highly successful business career. Other stars appearing in cameos in the film include Melissa McCarthy, the Pussycat Dolls, Pink, and Carrie Fisher (among many others).
