Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which actor played the role of Greg Jenko in the 2012 film '21 Jump Street'?

Answer: Channing Tatum

The film took its inspiration from the television series of the same name, which ran from 1987 until 1991, with Johnny Depp in a starring role. The premise was similar, with two police officers, played by Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill, going undercover in a school to stop drug dealing.

The film is classed as a 'buddy cop' film and a comedy, which means it shouldn't be taken too seriously. It proved popular, though and spawned a sequel in 2014 called '22 Jump Street'.
2. Adele has made a habit of issuing albums based on her age at the time of recording them, including '21' in 2011. Which of her ages has NOT appeared as an album title at the given age?

Answer: 35

Adele was born in 1988 and released her first album, '19', in 2008, followed by '21' (2011), '25' in 2015 and '30' in 2021. She reached the age of 37 in 2025 but has not released an album since 2021 so the chance of releasing one to match the age of 35 has passed.

All her albums have been best sellers, with the later three reaching number one in numerous countries according to the charts recorded on Wikipedia. Among her best selling singles are 'Make You Feel My Love' (2008), 'Rolling in the Deep' (2010) and 'Easy on Me' (2021).

Adele has taken a break from music, after completing a residency in Las Vegas and a series of concerts in Munich. The statement referring to this was made in July 2024 and referred to an 'indefinite break'.
3. Shin, or Sin, is the twenty-first letter in which of these alphabets?

Answer: Hebrew

There are two ways of pronouncing the letter, depending on where the dot appears when the letter is written. The letter looks something like a crown, with a line at the base and three vertical lines which have oval shapes at the top.

The Hebrew alphabet consists only of consonants, with the first two letters being Aleph and Bet. There are twenty-two letters in total, with the final one being Tav.
4. Scandium is element number 21 on the periodic table. Its main use is in alloys with which more common element?

Answer: Aluminium

The amount of scandium added to aluminium is very small, often described as a 'trace' and between 0.1 and 0.45%. The role of scandium is to add strength - its addition makes the grain more even in size.

The main use of scandium-based alloys is in the aerospace industry. It is also used for some types of sports equipment such as the shafts of golf clubs and bicycle frames as it adds strength but not weight.
5. In which setting in the UK are you likely to hear twenty-one described as the 'key of the door'?

Answer: Bingo Hall

This is one of the nicknames given to various numbers in the game of Bingo. There are still callers around, although a lot of games these days are electronic. 'Key of the Door' for number twenty-one refers to the days when reaching that age in the UK was the age of majority - it was reduced to eighteen in 1969.

Other common Bingo calls are 'Kelly's eye' for number one, 'two little ducks' for twenty-two and 'top of the shop' for ninety, the highest number in the traditional game.
6. The British band So Solid Crew had a 2001 UK hit with 21 of which of these?

Answer: Seconds

The band had numerous members, acting as a sort of collective and specialising in hip hop and garage music. They were based in London and had group members ranging from around nineteen to as many as thirty at times. A few of them became well known with Asher D, also known as Ashley Walters, maybe the most famous especially after he moved into acting.

The group's biggest hit was '21 Seconds', reaching number one on the UK Singles Chart in 2001. They had two further top ten records the same year, and are still active, with a changing cast of members, in the 2020s. They appear regularly as performers at festivals.
7. 21 Lutetia is what type of astronomical body found in the Solar System?

Answer: Asteroid

Discovered in 1852, 21 Lutetia is a large asteroid in the asteroid belt lying between Jupiter and Mars. Its name comes from the name which the Romans gave to Paris as the man who discovered it, Hermann Goldschmitt, was living in the city at the time.

The asteroid is classed as an M-type, meaning it is believed to have larger than average concentrations of metal. This type of asteroid is likely to be the origin of iron meteorites.
8. The genetic disorder trisomy 21 is also known by the name of which physician, who described the condition in the nineteenth century?

Answer: John Langdon Down

The disorder is caused by an extra copy of the twenty-first chromosome. In the UK it is commonly known as Down's Syndrome while the USA uses the name Down Syndrome. Those with the condition have a shorter neck and different facial features, and may also have heart defects and hearing and/or sight impairments. Leaning is slower than in children without the condition, but many children with the condition are able to attend mainstream schools.

The other conditions are also named after the doctors who described them. Parkinson's disease affects the nervous system, Bright's disease is a kidney condition and Hansen's disease is an alternative name for leprosy.
9. A guinea in the UK was made up of twenty-one of which now obsolete coins?

Answer: Shillings

The guinea was a real coin, minted from 1683 until 1814. It contained real gold, most of which came from the African country of Guinea which gave its name to the coin. The value varied originally, reflecting the price of the gold contained, but was fixed at twenty-one shillings in 1717. In decimal terms that would be £1.05.

Although no longer in everyday use, the name remains current in horse races such as the Two Thousand Guineas, which takes place at Newmarket. Horses are still auctioned using guineas in the UK and Ireland maintaining a long standing tradition.
10. The title of the quiz comes from a poem called 'When I Was One-and-Twenty', written by which English poet as part of his 'A Shropshire Lad' collection?

Answer: A E Housman

All the men listed were English poets, but it's Housman who wrote the collection called 'A Shropshire Lad'. It was published in 1896 and has 53 poems in total, many of which have been set to music.

'When I Was One-and-Twenty' is a cautionary tale, written from the point of view of a young man of that age and how he ignored the advice given to him by those much wiser than he was. The poem ends with his regrets at not listening, now he is himself older and wiser - at the age of twenty-two. The first verse ends with these lines:

'Give pearls away and rubies
But keep your fancy free."
But I was one-and-twenty,
No use to talk to me.'
