Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which famous American singer, also known as the "Chairman of the Board," inspired the title of this quiz since he supposedly claimed that "orange is the happiest color"?

Answer: Frank Sinatra

Frank Sinatra (1915-1998) was born in Hoboken, New Jersey. He is one of the most famous musicians of the 20th century, having released multiple successful hits like "New York, New York", "Fly Me to the Moon", and "My Way". Sinatra was married four times; one of his spouses was Mia Farrow (who later married filmmaker Woody Allen and had several children with him, including journalist Ronan Farrow). Frank Sinatra was also known as the "Chairman of the Board" and as "Ol' Blue Eyes" due to his distinctive eye color.

Several sources have attributed the quote "orange is the happiest color" to Frank Sinatra, though none of his songs contained that exact lyric. He did have a track called "Orange" in his 1956 collaboration with Gordon Jenkins, "Frank Sinatra Conducts Tone Poems of Color". In his song "It Never Entered My Mind", Sinatra mentions "ordering orange juice for one".
2. Which Spanish city lends its name to a bitter variety of orange that is usually associated with marmalade-making?

Answer: Seville

Seville is a beautiful city in the southern part of Spain. The capital of Andalusia, this city houses several landmarks and architectural masterpieces like the Plaza de Espana and the Royal Alcazar. Seville is also a great place to enjoy performances of the traditional art of flamenco. In addition to all those features, Seville is also famous for its bitter oranges that decorate the city's landscape while growing on trees. The oranges gained notoriety when they started being used to make marmalade, which is consumed in particularly large amounts in the United Kingdom.

Seville is not the only Spanish city known for its oranges; Valencia, in the eastern part of the country, is also famous for its sweeter variety of this fruit.

Other actors in the film included James Marcus (who played Georgie) and a brief appearance by David Prowse (who played Julian, but is better known for his part as Darth Vader in the "Star Wars" films).

5. Which of the following options best describes the work "The Love for Three Oranges" by Sergei Prokofiev?

Answer: Opera

Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953) was a prolific Russian composer who composed music in the form of concertos, ballets, and operas. His works were written for instruments like piano, clarinet, violin, and cello, among others. Even though Prokofiev was Russian, this opera was written and performed in French.
6. Which of these soft drinks was originally created as an orange-flavored soda?

Answer: Crush

Though many associate the Coca-Cola-owned brand Fanta with this orange-flavored carbonated drink, Crush was one of the original brands to specialize in orange soda. Businessman Clayton J. Howel and chemist Neil C. Ward created the product in 1911, years before Fanta even existed. Like many soda companies, Crush evolved to produce beverages of many other flavors, including apple, peach, and even chocolate.

Other brands, such as SunKist and Mirinda, are also well-known for their orange varieties of soda.
7. Which famous orange-seller was the mistress of Charles II during the Restoration period?

Answer: Nell Gwyn

Nell Gwyn (1650-1687) is associated with the Restoration period in England, which took place between 1660 and 1714. The Restoration marked the time when Charles II came back from exile and took actions, such as the Declaration of Breda, to reclaim the crown and be recognized as king. Even though King Charles II was married to Catherine of Braganza, Gwyn was widely known for being the monarch's mistress and even had two children with him.

Gwyn worked for many years as an "orange girl", a job where she would sell oranges to attendees inside the theater. She would soon become a popular actress and comedian as well.
8. Which of the following brands specializes in triple sec, a liqueur that is flavored with oranges?

Answer: Cointreau

Cointreau is a liqueur made from the essence of orange peels. The French triple sec contains a high volume of alcohol and can be used to create a variety of popular cocktails, including the margarita and the cosmopolitan. Interestingly, the actual liquid is colorless, but Cointreau bottles are traditionally orange.

The founder of this beverage company was Edouard Cointreau, who described the process of creating the drink as follows: "I have searched passionately for the quintessential flavor of Cointreau. I wanted to combine crystal-clear purity with the subtlety of tastes made from the perfect blend of sweet and bitter orange peels".
9. William III of England was known as the Prince of Orange. Which country did he come from?

Answer: The Netherlands

The House of Orange was a dynasty that derived its name from the medieval principality of Orange, in old Provence (now southern France). The dynasty was important in the history of The Netherlands and that of its royal family. Since King William III was born in Holland, he took the title of Prince of Orange as soon as he was born. At that time, Dutch leaders controlled Orange, with William the Silent (William III's great-grandfather) having served as the inaugural nobleman of the House of Orange-Nassau dynasty.

Today, the football team of the Netherlands is nicknamed "the mechanical orange" or "the clockwork orange", since this is the primary color of the players' jerseys.
10. Which country, which calls one of its major cities "the Big Orange," is a major exporter of Jaffa oranges?

Answer: Israel

Jaffa oranges are a variety of sweet oranges that is an attractive product because they contain little to no seeds, compared to other varieties of the fruit. Though these oranges are not well-suited to make juice because they barely have any, they are a sought-after export because of their tough yet easy-to-peel skin and their fantastic taste. The history of these oranges dates back centuries ago in the Middle East. Israel is one of the world's largest exporters of Jaffa oranges. They are also grown in other places like Jordan, Cyprus, and Lebanon.

The Israeli city of Tel Aviv-Yafo is often called "the big orange", a reference that originated from the Jaffa orange variety.
