Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which apple trade mark name shares its name with a group of girls from the movie "Grease"?

Answer: Pink Lady

Pink Lady is the trade mark name that Cripps Pink apples are sold under in many countries. The Cripps Pink was first cultivated in Australia in the 1970s, and is the result of breeding the Lady Williams apple with a Golden Delicious apple. Several mutations of the Cripps Pink apple exist, including the Rosy Glow, the Lady in Red and the Pink Belle.

In the 1978 movie "Grease", the main female characters call themselves Pink Ladies and wear pink jackets.
2. Which apple cultivar shares its name with an active stratovolcano in Asia?

Answer: Fuji

Though it shares its name with it, the Fuji apple is not actually named for Mount Fuji, the highest mountain in Japan, but for the town of Fujisaki where the Fuji apple was first developed in the 1930s. It is a cross between the Red Delicious and Virginia Ralls Genet apples.

Mount Fuji is indeed an active stratovolcano (made up of many different layers of materials), but it has not erupted since the early 1700s.
3. Which apple cultivar shares its name, in whole or in part, with the nickname of the state of New York?

Answer: Empire

Appropriately, the Empire apple was first cultivated in New York in the 1940s. It is a cross between a McIntosh and a Red Delicious. Some marketed mutations of the Empire include the Teeple Red Empire, the Royal Empire and the Crown Empire.

New York is also called the Empire State; this name appears on New York state license plates.
4. Which of these apple cultivars sounds like it could have been a character in the movie "300"?

Answer: Spartan

The Spartan apple was first developed in the 1930s in British Columbia, Canada. It was bred from the McIntosh and another unknown 'parent' apple.

The 2006 movie "300" was a fictionalized account of the Battle of Thermopylae, in which 300 Spartans took on and held off a huge invading Persian army in 480 B.C.
5. Which popular American apple shares its name with a family of acting brothers?

Answer: Baldwin

Historically the Baldwin apple has been one of the most popular in the United States, and the one most exported from the US. It originated in Massachusetts in the 1740s. They are commonly used for making hard cider.

The Baldwin brothers are a group of American actors, with the eldest, Alec, being probably the best known. The others are Stephen, Daniel and William (Billy) Baldwin.
6. Which of these apple types sounds like it might have been portrayed by Sylvester Stallone?

Answer: Rambo

The Rambo apple, not very well known today, dates back to colonial America. It is thought that a Swede, Peter Rambo, brought apple seeds to America with him around 1637. There is also a completely unrelated apple called the Summer Rambo, which was originally called Summer Rambour until sometime in the 19th century.

Sylvester Stallone played John Rambo in a series of action movies from 1982 to 2008.
7. Which apple cultivar shares its name with the "food of the gods"?

Answer: Ambrosia

The Ambrosia apple was first cultivated in the 1990s in British Columbia, Canada. It is likely descended from the Golden Delicious and Starking Delicious; it was not purposely bred but was discovered growing in an orchard.

In Greek mythology, ambrosia is the food of the gods that gives immortality to those who eat it. It has sometimes been conflated with nectar, the drink of the Greek gods, though many sources consider them to be two separate things.
8. Several apple types have this word in their name, a name that is shared with a Stephen Schwartz Broadway musical. What is it?

Answer: Pippin

Pippin apples include the Cox's Orange Pippin, the Newtown Pippin, the Sturmer Pippin and the Ribston Pippin. Cox's Orange Pippin is a common dessert apple in the UK, where it originated in 1830.

The musical "Pippin" debuted on Broadway in 1972.
9. Which of these apple cultivars sounds like it might also be a brooch?

Answer: Cameo

The Cameo apple was discovered, not purposely produced, in 1987 in Washington state in the US. It's thought that it may be the by-product of a Red Delicious and a Golden Delicious.

A cameo is also a piece of jewellery, like a brooch, that has a carved image. It's also the word for a brief appearance in a movie or TV show, usually by a fairly big name celebrity.
10. Which of these apple cultivars shares its name with a 'Lady' that was gifted to the United States by France?

Answer: Liberty

The Liberty apple was developed in New York State in the US in the 1950s. One of its parent apples is the Macoun.

The Statue of Liberty, also called Lady Liberty, was a gift to the US from France in the 19th century; it was dedicated in 1886. The Statue of Liberty stands on Liberty Island, part of Manhattan.
