Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A dime is an American coin worth ten cents. It has 118 ridges around its edge. What are these called?

Answer: Reeds

Reeded edges were introduced on U.S. dimes in the 1790s, shortly after the first dimes were manufactured. This follows the practice started in Britain in the 1696 AD. Prior to that time, people would shave tiny slivers of metal from the edges of coins and accumulate the precious metal shavings to melt down and sell.

To stop that practice, Sir Isaac Newton (acting as Warden of England's Royal Mint) introduced the reeding practice which made it very easy to see if a coin had been tampered with by someone. The American dime continues this tradition.
2. What is the half-goat and half-fish that is the tenth sign of the Zodiac?

Answer: Capricorn

The symbol of a sea-goat (a mythical creature with the upper body of a goat and the tail of a fish) represents Capricorn and applies to those born between December 22nd and January 19th. Capricorn is an Earth sign, making those people grounded, reliable, and practical thinkers.

The sign is ruled by Saturn, the planet associated with discipline, authority, rules, and time. Despite their serious manner, Capricorns are said to have a fun, rebellious side that they only show to their closest friends. It is also said that they "age backward," becoming more youthful and playful as they mature.
3. In the sport of gymnastics, a 10 is a perfect score. Who, in the 1976 Olympics, was the first athlete to score this while on the uneven bars?

Answer: Nadia Comaneci

Nadia Comăneci, only 14 years old at the time, represented Romania at the Montreal 1976 Summer Olympics. On July 18th of that year, she executed a flawless routine on the uneven bars. Interestingly, the scoreboards at the time were only programmed to display three digits (up to 9.99) because a perfect 10 was deemed impossible.

By the end of the 1976 Games, she had earned a total of seven perfect 10s-four on the uneven bars and three on the balance beam. She also netted three gold medals.
4. What is the 10th element on the Periodic Table and is famous for producing a distinct reddish-orange glow under the right conditions?

Answer: Neon

Neon (Ne) is a colorless, odorless noble gas with atomic number 10. When an electric current passes through it in a vacuum tube, however, it glows with a distinct, bright reddish-orange light. It is very rare on earth, making up less than .002% of the atmosphere. However, it is the fifth most abundant element in the universe, formed by the fusion of oxygen and helium in large stars.

Neon has several uses but its predominant one is for signage and lighting. Its red-orange hue is able to penetrate fog and makes it ideal for beacons.
5. Ants have ten pairs of tiny openings along their bodies called spiracles. What are they used for?

Answer: Breathing

Ants breathe without lungs. Instead, they have ten pairs of small pores on the thorax and abdomen that let air in and out. From the spiracles, air moves into a tracheae system of tubes. These tubes then deliver oxygen directly to tissues and cells.

The very act of an ant moving pumps air through the spiracles, but they can flex their abdomen to bring in more circulation. They can also close these openings to avoid saturation by water.
6. The movie "10 Things I Hate About You", a romantic comedy, came out in 1999. What Shakespearean play is it loosely based upon?

Answer: The Taming of the Shrew

The movie is about a pair of very different sisters. The household deal is that the younger sister cannot date until the older one does (and she is not interested). To solve that problem, classmates pay the school "bad boy" to get the older one to go out. The plot is then about betrayal, true love, and family.

The film launched the careers of several of its stars, including Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger. The plot was based on Shakespeare's play "The Taming of the Shrew" with many of the characters even having the same (or very nearly the same) names. The plots mirror each other fairly closely with a few minor exceptions.
7. Mar10 Day is an annual celebration that is observed every year on March 10th. What video game franchise does it celebrate?

Answer: Nintendo's Mario

The celebration was started by dedicated fans who noticed the clever wordplay with the date. Nintendo quickly embraced it and uses it for special announcements, such as new game release dates or collaborations. They also offer discounts on popular games in the franchise such as "Super Mario Odyssey".

Fans often celebrate by hosting tournaments, dressing up as characters, having parties, and, of course, playing the games.
8. "Ten" is an alternative rock album that was released in 1991. What group, led by Eddie Vedder, recorded it?

Answer: Pearl Jam

Pearl Jam's grunge and alternative rock album was named after the the jersey number of professional basketball player Mookie Blaylock, which was the band's original name. Released in August of 1991, it was not an immediate success with the public but by the end of 1992 it had sold over 13 million copies in the U.S. alone.

The lyrics, primarily written by vocalist Eddie Vedder, deal with heavy social issues and personal struggles. These include depression, suicide, homelessness, and physical and mental abuse.
9. 10 Downing Street, in London, serves as the official residence and office of the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. What color is this simple, yet iconic, door?

Answer: Black

Back in 1732, King George II offered the house as a personal gift to Sir Robert Walpole, who was the First Lord of the Treasury. Walpole accepted it on the condition that it would be an official residence of the office, not a personal gift, a tradition that continues today (since the title has been held by the Prime Minister since the early 20th century).

The famous black door is made of blast-proof steel with a simple letter box that states "First Lord of the Treasury". The original black oak door is in a museum.
10. What novel by Giovanni Boccaccio is about a group of ten travelers telling ten stories for ten days while they try to escape the Black Death?

Answer: The Decameron

Giovanni Boccaccio wrote the novel over a period of several years between approximately 1349 and 1353 AD. He created it right after the plague swept through his home of Florence, Italy in 1348. It is about a group of ten young, wealthy Florentines--seven women and three men--who go to a villa to try to escape the plague.

Each of the ten tells one story per day for the total ten days, resulting in 100 separate stories. The stories range from comic tales to romantic sagas to religious theories. The book itself is said to have inspired Shakespeare for several of his plays.
11. In the Bible (Exodus 20:1-17 NIV) God divinely revealed ten commandments (moral and ethical laws) . To whom did He deliver them on Mount Sinai?

Answer: Moses

The commandments were the core of the agreement between God and the Israelites after He freed them from slavery in Egypt. God delivered these to Moses as Moses was leading the people out of slavery guiding them through the wilderness to the Promised Land.

The commandments (Exodus 20:1-17 NIV) are as follows:

3 "You shall have no other gods before[a] me.

4 "You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.

7 "You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.

8 "Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

12 "Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.

13 "You shall not murder.

14 "You shall not commit adultery.

15 "You shall not steal.

16 "You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.

17 "You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor."
12. The Tenth Legion, or "Legio X Equestris", was raised by what leader in 61 BC while he was governor of Hispania Ulterior (modern Andalusia, Spain)?

Answer: Julius Caesar

13. When a surfer performs a "hang ten" maneuver, to what is the ten referring?

Answer: Ten toes over the nose of the board

The phrase literally refers to "hanging" all "ten" toes over the nose of the surfboard while riding a wave. The technique involves several steps. First, the surfer finds a steep, walled wave. Next, the surfer quickly shuffles his feet toward the front of the board. Lastly, when ten toes are placed over the edge, the surfer must make constant tiny adjustments to maintain balance.

The phrase has become connected to California's surf scene and its carefree outlook on life.
14. What late night television host had a segment called "The Top Ten" for almost 30 years after the subject debuted on September 18, 1985?

Answer: David Letterman

His first subject was "Top Ten Words That Almost Rhyme with 'Peas' " He would count them in reverse with the #1 on the list being the final punchline of the topic.

As the segment grew in popularity over the years, it frequently featured celebrity guests including actors, singers, and politicians.
15. Windows 10 was released in 2015 and offered a new web browser to personal computer users called Edge. What company made Windows 10?

Answer: Microsoft

Windows 10 marked Microsoft's departure from traditional operating system releases in favor of a "Windows as a service" model and offered a very user friendly platform. It also introduced some new innovations such as the Microsoft Edge web browser (initially replacing Internet Explorer). It also had a biometric authentication system called Windows Hello, which allowed users to sign in with facial recognition or fingerprint scans.

Microsoft called Windows 10 to be the "last version of Windows," meaning it would receive ongoing feature and security updates periodically rather than through paid releases.
16. What avian-sounding name is a version of the popular ten-pin bowling game with significantly smaller equipment?

Answer: Duckpin

Duckpin bowling has a similar 10-frame structure, but players are allowed three rolls per frame instead of two. If a player knocks down all 10 pins on the first roll, it is a strike. If they do it on the second, it is a spare. If it takes all three rolls to clear the pins, they receive 10 points for the frame with no bonus. The ball is about the size of a softball (with no holes) and the pins are roughly half the height of regular bowling.

It is called "duckpin" because the way the small chunky pins fly through the air resembles a "flock of flying ducks".
17. "Ben Ten" is an animated science-fiction television show that premiered in 2005. What can the main character morph into with the help of a special device?

Answer: Alien life forms

The premise of the story is that Ben, on a vacation, stumbles across a strange device that looks like a watch. He discovered that it gave him the ability to transform into ten different alien lifeforms, each with its own unique powers and abilities. While in this temporary state, he must fight villains and help to save the planet.

The show ran for three years and was a huge hit for Cartoon Network. It spun off television sequels, movies, and video games.
18. Courtroom Ten features in JK Rowling's "Harry Potter" books and movies as the primary courtroom used for high-profile criminal trials and Wizengamot hearings. In what building is it located?

Some key trials were held at this location including the Death Eater trials and the hearing regarding Harry's use of underage magic in front of his cousin. Dolores Umbridge herself was tried in Courtroom Ten for her crimes against Muggle-borns.
19. What soda used an advertising campaign for almost 20 years that stated "Drink a bite to eat at 10, 2, and 4!"?

Answer: Dr Pepper

Beginning in the late 1920s, Dr Pepper began the 10-2-4 campaign. It was based on research from a study that suggested people experience sugar lows at around 10 a.m., 2 p.m., and 4 p.m during the day. Dr Pepper then marketed their soda as a quick "bite" and effective energy boost to combat this fatigue.

The campaign ran for almost two decades and was a huge success. It created a routine around consuming the product at specific, "medically mandated" times, making drinking Dr Pepper a part of a person's daily life.
20. Dodge introduced the first production car with a V10 engine in 1991. What was the scary-sounding model that boasted this upgrade?

Answer: Viper

The 8.0-liter V10 engine in the Dodge Viper was developed with engineering input from Lamborghini (which Chrysler owned at the time). While Chrysler provided the initial design and core concept, Lamborghini provided their knowledge of high-performance engine materials to make the V10 suitable for a sports car.

This allowed the engine to have more cubic inches and more power pulses per crankshaft revolution. This gave the Viper the ability to run smoother and produce more power than its V8 counterparts.
