Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. LITERATURE: Who is the author of the poem, "The Phoenix and the Turtle"?

Answer: William Shakespeare

This poem used birds to illustrate the death of 'Ideal Love'. It has also been called the first great published metaphysical poem. The turtle is not the aquatic creature, but the Turtle Dove.
2. MOVIES: "Flight of the Phoenix" was originally released in 1965 and told the story of a plane crash in the Sahara desert where the crew rebuilt the plane and it flew again. In which desert did the plane crash in the 2004 remake?

Answer: Gobi

In the 1965 version, the stunt of taking off at the end of the movie was deemed too dangerous, so legendary stunt pilot Paul Mantz was asked to merely come in low, run his landing gear along the ground, then take off again, simulating a take-off. On the second take the plane crashed and was destroyed, killing Mantz.
3. MUSIC: What singer released his sixth album, "Phoenix", in 1980?

Answer: Dan Fogelberg

The album included the hit single "Longer" which reached number two on the Billboard Pop Singles Chart. The album's cover depicts a phoenix lifting a heart by a string on its tail.
4. PEOPLE: In the Harry Potter series, Dumbledore's Phoenix is named Fawkes. In 1605, Guy Fawkes was part of a plot to blow up what building?

Answer: Palace of Westminster

Guy Fawkes was a part of a plot to destroy the Palace of Westminster during the State Opening of Parliament on November 5, 1605. He was discovered guarding a stash of gunpowder in the cellars of the Palace. Even today, the cellars are searched thoroughly before this event as a precautionary measure.

In 2006, Warner Brothers released the movie "V for Vendetta" about a terrorist who used Guy Fawkes for inspiration.
5. RELIGION: In which culture is it believed the legend of the phoenix originated?

Answer: Egyptian

The ancient Egyptians linked the myth of the phoenix with the longing for immortality, which was so strong in their civilization. From there the myth spread throughout the Mediterranean. They called the heron-like bird 'Benu' or 'Bennu'. The Greeks gave it the name 'phoenix' (φοίνιξ), meaning the color purple-red or crimson.

The Greeks and Romans pictured the bird more like a peacock or eagle. The Greeks believed the phoenix lived in Arabia, near a well.
6. SCIENCE/TECHNOLOGY: The Phoenix spacecraft was launched by NASA in 2007 to explore Mars with what mission?

Answer: all of these

Historically, Mars has been viewed as a waterless desert planet. However, in 2002 the Mars Odyssey orbiter discovered water ice below some areas of the planet's surface. The Phoenix Mars Lander was designed to land in one of these areas and dig below the surface to reach the ice, obtain samples, and analyze them.
7. SPORTS: Which basketball player was traded to the Phoenix Suns in February 2008?

Answer: Shaquille O'Neal

"Shaq", a notoriously poor free-throw shooter, was the NBA's first overall draft pick in 1992, chosen by the Orlando Magic. He moved to the LA Lakers in 1996 and then the Miami Heat in 2004. In 2008 he was traded to Phoenix for forward Shawn Marion and guard Marcus Banks.
8. TELEVISION: On the soap opera, "Days of Our Lives", who is called the Phoenix for his ability to come back from the ashes?

Stefano DiMera played by Joseph Mascolo began terrorizing Salem back in 1982. Since then, he's cheated death many times, all the while fiercely protecting his ever-expanding family.
9. VIDEO GAMES: In 1980, the arcade game "Phoenix" was released by Amstar. The game was an outer space-themed fix shooter popular at that time. Which of the following is NOT one of the missions of the game?

Answer: destroy the bird that is trying to burn your ship

"Phoenix" stood out in arcade games at the time, because along with Galaxian, it was one of the first full color arcade games. In addition, the Phoenix mothership has the distinction of being the first video arcade game boss featured as a challenge on its own.
10. WORLD: While visiting Phoenix, Arizona you can visit which of the following attractions?

Answer: Superstition Farm

Opening in 2006, Superstition Farm is a working dairy farm and caters to activities for children. There are many opportunities to interact with animals including a petting zoo, performances, and tours.
Blackburn Pavilion is in Regents Zoo in London, Land of the Dragons is a ride at Chessington Zoo in the UK, and Tiger Temple is at Steve Irwin's Australia Zoo.
Land of the Dragons contains mostly children's rides including a spinning roller coaster called Dragon's Fury. Its four-passenger cars spin freely. In a poll of the best steel roller coasters in the world, Dragon's Fury is ranked 30th.
