Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Is there a difference between a left and right-handed boomeRANG?

Answer: Yes

Although early boomerangs likely had no distinguishable differences for left or right-handed users (having been made as hunting weapons by, famously, Indigenous Australians), modern, refined boomerangs are generally seen as recreational items designed for competitive and leisure use. You'd be likely to find traditionally-made ones, by all means, but they can also buy cheaper ones in toy store around the world.

The slight variation in the construction of a left or right-handed device affects the spin; right-handers will travel left, while a left-hander flies to the right. They also spin opposite, with the right-hander going counter-clockwise and the left-hander going the reverse.
2. The city of RANGoon was the capital of what Asian nation?

Answer: Myanmar

Now known as Yangon, the city of Rangoon was the capital of Myanmar (originally Burma) until 2006 when the nation purpose-made the more centrally-located Naypyidaw into its new capital. The renaming doesn't stop at 'Yangon'; the city was originally named Dagon a thousand years ago and it would grow exponentially when it was selected by Burmese royalty to be the building site of some of its largest pagodas.

In the modern era, Yangon contains numerous examples of British colonial architecture, all surrounding the Shwedagon Pagoda, its most sacred site.
3. Known to change colours based on soil acidity or alkalinity, which of these flowering plants is derived from the Greek for 'water vessel'?

Answer: HydRANGea

Though also found in the Americas, hydrangeas see their most vibrant and cultivated uses in Asia, being common decorative plants in Japan and China due to their variety, beauty, and use in various herbal teas. Notably, growing a hydrangea plant in soils with high acidity will cause the flowers to blossom in darker blues; they'll go pinker in alkaline soil.

The frangipani, meanwhile, is also known as plumeria, and despite the Italian-derived name, it's often seen in tropical areas such as Central and South America (though also in the Indian subcontinent). Visitors to the Hawaiian islands would also be likely to encounter them; they're commonly used in the construction of leis.
4. Adding a letter to RANG will give you what word for a kitchen appliance with a cooktop?

Answer: RANGE

Although early kitchen stoves were created with the aim to keep heat inside and were, in effect, extremely large wood-fuelled heaters or ovens, modernization allowed appliance-makers to optimize and hone this key kitchen fixture. A normal oven will contain a heated interior, but an oven with a stovetop cooker, whether a series of electric elements or gas burners, is considered a range.

The modern version was first invented by British scientist Benjamin Thompson in the end of the eighteenth century, though early ranges were used by cooks in the Middle East much earlier than this.
5. Which of these TV shows, named after a destination in the Greater Los Angeles Area, was a breakout FOX drama between 2003 and 2007?

Answer: The O.C.

How does this apply to the topic at hand? Well, The O.C. was the abbreviated name for 'ORANGe County', the setting of the show as it followed a group of SoCal locals and their dramatic turns throughout the mid-2000s. The four-season show had an all-star cast of Ben McKenzie, Adam Brody, Mischa Barton, Rachel Bilson, and others and was amongst the top talked-about shows in its debut season, ultimately dropping in ratings by its conclusion.

The real Orange County is slightly southeast of Los Angeles proper and contains Irvine, Anaheim, Laguna Beach, Santa Ana, and Newport Beach (amongst other locations). It's one of the most populous counties in the entire United States.
6. "La GRANGe" was the first hit for which Texan blues rock band, later known for tracks like "Tush", "Cheap Sunglasses", and "Sharp Dressed Man"?

Answer: ZZ Top

Though ZZ Top performed as a trio for more than fifty years, it took a few albums before this blues rock outfit ended up getting pushed into the spotlight, becoming one of the key bands of the American music scene in the 1970s and 1980s. Their third album, "Tres Hombres", would feature "La Grange", and the track would peak at only number forty-one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.

It was enough to give them momentum going into singles like "Tush" in 1975, "Sharp Dressed Man" in 1983, and "Legs" in 1984, which gave them their top-charting song (peaking at number eight).

They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004.
7. Critically endangered, the great apes known as oRANGutans are native to which region?

Answer: Southeast Asia

Found only on Borneo and Sumatra in Southeast Asia, orangutans are technically apes though unlike most other such primates from around the world, they reside in rainforest tree canopies, using their strong arms to maneuver from up high. Although these primates at one time spread throughout Indonesia and Malaysia, human interference and deforestation accelerated their endangerment, leaving scattered groups in the wild.

This being said, orangutans are notably protected in conservation centres on both islands, often allowing them to gain a significant spotlight in the way of protective efforts.
8. The 2011 Gore Verbinski film, "RANGo", starred which of these eccentric actors?

Answer: Johnny Depp

Both Gore Verbinski and Johnny Depp have fairly crazy bodies of work with the former having directed "The Ring", several "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies, and "A Cure For Wellness" and the latter being one ofthe highest-earning stars of a generation. "Rango" featured both reuniting in 2011 for an animated adventure featuring a chameleon taking up the mantle of sheriff in an old west town.

The film, which found great success in the box office, would go on to win the Best Animated Feature Oscar.
9. Typically found on a university or college ground, a courtyard known as a 'quad' is generally an abbreviated name for what kind of architectural space?

Answer: Quadrangle

Although modern quads are known as such for students at educational facilities, especially those in North American and the UK, such features are also found in religious structures and royal palaces, often acting as open air gardens or walled meeting spaces surrounded by an enclosing structure.

The Mob Quad at Oxford University (at Merton College), for example, was constructed from buildings that have outward access to the street, but also an inner courtyard that can be faced inward from the structures themselves. Built in the 13th century, it would become the basis for this now-common concept.
10. "You... RANG?" What "Addams Family" character was known for answering their front door?

Answer: Lurch

Originally played by 6'9" actor Ted Cassidy in the 1960s, Lurch acted as the butler of the Addams Family and was based on the same character from the "New Yorker" comic strips originally started in the late 1930s. Similar to a Frankenstein monster, Lurch is a hulking, seemingly-human figure with what seems to be immense strength, even if he may often be seen doing menial and delicate chores around the household. Notably, he would appear as if from nowhere whenever someone rang the front doorbell.

In the series of '90s films reviving the "Addams Family" franchise, the role was played by "Twin Peaks" actor Carel Struycken.
